Math 165: Midterm — Part 2

Spring 2017
This part of the exam has 6 problems for a total of 58 points. Point values are given in each
problem statement.

Answer each question completely. Show all work. No credit is allowed for mere answers with
no work shown. Show the steps of calculations. State the reasons that justify conclusions.
This portion of the exam will be collected after 50 minutes.

8. The functions f and g are differentiable with f (2) = −3, f 0 (2) = 5, g(2) = 4, and
g 0 (2) = 7. Let
H(x) = f (x)eg(x) .

9. The graph below shows the millions of metric tons of energy related CO2 (carbon
dioxide) produced per year from 2005 to 2015.

a. What is the average rate of change of CO2 production with respect to time for
the years 2007 through 2014. Your answer should include units. (4 points.)

b. Find an interval of years over which the average rate of change of CO2 production
with respect to time is equal to 0 metric tons per year. (4 points.)

10. A high altitude weather balloon rises and falls during the day as the temperature
changes and as atmospheric pressure changes. During a 24 hour period the height of
a balloon is given by
π
h(t) = 16 + 0.15 sin t kilometers,

where t, 0 ≤ t ≤ 24, is measured in hours.

a. Find the instantaneous rate of change of the height of the balloon with respect
to time at t = 15 hours. Include units with your answer. Is the balloon rising or
falling at this instant? (5 points.)

b. For what value(s) of t, 0 ≤ t ≤ 24, is the acceleration of the balloon equal to 0

km/hour2 ? (5 points.)

shown below. (4 points each.)

a. Find G0 (4).

b. If H(x) = F (x) · G(x), find H 0 (4).

c. If J(x) = F (G(x)) (a composition), find J 0 (4).
