Research Topic / Area of Study Mechanical Engineering - 3D printer/Laser cutter 2-in-one

machine

Connection to research paper My paper focused on the field of mechanical engineering, as

well as the education involved with this field. With the machine
I am building, meticulous planning will be required, as well as
CAD skills.

Goal of product / what problem or The limitations of 3D printers in terms of time and material cost
need solved or addressed when creating objects better suited to a laser cutting machine.

Estimated time to complete 4 Months

People who will assist (if applicable) Sam Hofmann (Mechanical Engineering Student at UNCC)
Mentor

Estimated cost / investment $650

What will judges see at Judges will see the progress and different iterations of the
presentation? (evidence of work machine over time as revisions are made to the design. In
and development) addition to this, there will be a live demonstration of the device
at my presentation. The progress of the development of this
device will be documented with every change and every
iteration of the digital model.

Personal stretch (area of growth) Through this project, I will learn how to use CAD software and
learn additional skills in assembly and design. In addition to this
I will learn about laser technology, which I have not worked
with before.

Product Description:
My product will be a 3d printer/ Laser cutter machine. Each of these machines have their weaknesses, so
having them as a combo machine is quite beneficial to a maker. The machine will have an
interchangeable head unit that will either laser cut or 3d print based on which unit is installed. The whole
machine will be driven by a Raspberry Pi computer, as well as a standard G-Code based arduino board
for movement instructions and power.
