1. The HIsarna project

 HIsarna is an innovative ironmaking technology developed under the ULCOS

(Ultra Low CO2 Steelmaking) initiative of the European Steel Industry
 The work started in 2004 and resulted in the construction and operation of a
unique pilot plant at Tata Steel IJmuiden, The Netherlands
 Before industrial implementation construction and operation of a semi-industrial
demonstration plant is required, also located at the IJmuiden site

• Tata Steel IJmuiden is a fully integrated

steelmaking site producing 100 % flat high
Tata Steel IJmuiden
value added products

• Tata Steel IJmuiden has a deep sea Harbor

to receive internationally traded raw
materials and has good logistic connections

• In IJmuiden an R&D department of over 300

FTE and in-house Engineering are located

2. Commercial impact of the technology

 Primary ironmaking accounts for 85 % of the energy consumption and CO2
emissions of steelmaking and accounts for large parts of the invested capital,
environmental measures and land requirement of an integrated steelmaking
site

 HIsarna is a revolutionary innovation in ironmaking that can eliminate 2 out of

the 3 process steps for ironmaking

2. Commercial impact of the technology

 HIsarna offers a unique combination of Environmental and

Economical benefits
 Reduction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions per ton of steel
 Flexibility in raw material quality
 Lower operational and capital sustaining costs
 Zero waste, recycling of Zn rich waste
 Improved competitive position in Global market due to innovative
technology

3. Funding of the Demonstration phase

 The HIsarna demo project will cost 300 – 350 M Euro

 The Demo project is the final stage in a development path that has
already demanded considerable money and resources
 Because the technology is not free of risks yet such an investment can
not be justified by an individual steelmaker
 Especially because the steel market has not recovered yet from the
financial crisis
 Scarce funds are used for higher priority investments

Coal Ironmaking
Coal Coking/Agglomeration Ironmaking

 1.9 t-CO2 per ton steel  Lower carbon footprint

 Continuous improvement (no “break through”)  20 % CO2 reduction
 80 % CO2 reduction with CCS
 Strong dependence on import  Less depending on imports
 Requires coking coal  Non coking coals
 Prime quality iron ores  Allows higher levels of “contamination” in iron
ore
 High level of recycling, but limitation on return of Zn  Circular economy
in the cycle  Zero waste
 Recycling of high Zn scrap and waste
 Blast Furnace Technology is available globally  Innovation leadership for Europe
