For over 40 years, Lapp has been a leader on the subject of Line Compaction.
Line Compaction is necessary due to increased transmission voltages and operating temperatures within
limited right-of-way spaces. In cooperation with utilities, consultants and other manufactures, LAPP offers
compact line insulation solutions that allow the building of maximum transmission capability into a given
ROW using LAPP Horizontal Line Posts, Braced Posts, Horizontal Vee and other assemblies. The advanced
compact insulation design can cut construction costs, reduce right-of-way, minimize maintenance, improve
visual appeal, minimize vandalism risk, and assure maximum operating reliability.
Cost Savings can be realized through the use of a narrow conductor support system which results in savings
over other transmission designs on the outlay for right-of-way. Other cost benefits include:
Using existing rights-of-way, poles and often conductors when upgrading lines to higher voltages,
without sacrificing phase-to-phase or phase-to-ground clearances
Reduced expenditures for cross arms, bracing hardware and structural members.
Trim, Unobtrusive Profile: Horizontal line post insulators capitalize on reduced phase-to-phase and phase-
to-ground clearances by effectively controlling conductor position. The single pole, armless construction
produces minimal visual impact with a trim, unobtrusive profile which assures an extra measure of public
acceptance.
Construction costs are reduced by fast assembly insulators and framing of pole at ground level, for easy
erection of structures ready for conductors
LAPP Insulators is a global industry leader in HVDC insulation for Transmission and Substation applications.
We address the specific and unique technical requirements applicable to HVDC insulation, which is treated
differently from AC lines. LAPP brings together the entire wealth of experience and knowledge of our
engineering team through LAPP LIKE, offering innovative solutions, high voltage testing services and
consultancy services. Rigorous testing through LAPP’s High Voltage Testing Laboratory in Selb, Germany, as
well as through independent testing laboratories (STRI in Sweden and Statnett in Norway), confirm the
superior performance of the RODURFLEX suspension for HVDC applications.

Engineered Solutions using FEA.
Damping systems are designed using computer simulated damping studies to optimize the application of
Spacer Dampers and Stockbridge dampers. Live conductor vibration monitoring can be done using the
"Vibrec 500" to check damping systems on newly installed lines or to evaluate existing lines to assess
vibration intensity, evaluate conductor residual life or investigate the cause of damage. Vibrec 500 can be
applied to evaluate Aeolian vibration or subspan oscillation.
We apply more than 40 years of experience together with computer based simulation tools to predict and
optimize mechanical and electrical behavior of our engineered strings/transmission assemblies. The result is
that we can deliver light & compact designs suitable for:
Extremely high strength requirements
Very long spans
Large diameter or high temperature conductors
Corona free performance
Special string configurations.
Porcelain suspension insulators have a very long useful life. Over the years efficient porcelain designs have
evolved to become highly standardized. This standardization permits an exact definition of ratings, as well
as precisely defined design and quality control testing. Through the decades, LAPP Insulators has been
responsible for many developments in porcelain suspensions, including improvements in design, assembly,
materials and testing which have significantly contributed to today’s standards.
1. Hardware
Standard, High-Strength and Fog-type porcelain suspensions are available for ball-socket or clevis-eye insulator coupling.
Caps are ferrous, hot-dip galvanized.
2. Cement Assembly
Caps are cemented on the porcelain. This loads the porcelain in a large area, low-intensity compression grip. LAPP
specifies the use of cement well-suited for porcelain insulator assemblies.
3. Galvanized Hardware
Before cementing, all surfaces of the hardware that will come in contact with the cement are coated. The coating protects
the hardware from chemical attack by the cement. It also allows for the relief of mechanical stress due to thermal
variations.
8. Protected Leakage
The porcelain shell is designed to provide optimum leakage distance in relation to the shell diameter. The sturdy shell
design also protects the leakage corrugations from mechanical damage.
9. Glazes
Porcelain suspension insulators are available in a choice of four glaze colors: light gray-ANSI 70, dark gray, brown and royal
blue. Please consult the tables in this catalog to determine which colors are available for specific products.
Strength Ratings
A complete product line allows transmission design engineers to specify exactly what they want in
strength ratings.
- Porcelain suspension insulators are available in ball-and-socket and clevis-eye designs for M&E
strength ratings of 20,000 lbs., 30,000 lbs., 40,000 lbs. and 50,000 lbs. for conventional disc type
suspensions
- Fog-type suspension designs are also available for M&E strength ratings of 20,000 lbs., 30,000
lbs. and 40,000 lbs.
- M&E strength ratings of 66,000 and 90,000 lbs. are available upon request
Markings on Insulators
Porcelain suspension insulators are marked with the year of manufacture, country of origin, M&E
rating and proof test rating of the insulators.

LAPP Insulators designed and produced the industry’s first line post insulator in 1931, using the early fog-
type design as foundation to build upon. For more than 80 years, LAPP has continued to set the industry
standard, leading in the design, production, assembly, material and testing of line post insulators. Through
research and development, LAPP offers new engineered solutions for Compact Line Construction through
the use of LAPP horizontal line posts.
6. Glazes
Line Post insulators are available in select glaze colors. Light gray-ANSI 70 is supplied for all standard
strength line posts unless otherwise specified. Dark gray glaze is supplied for all high strength line posts
as a way to identify these units in service. Brown glaze is optional.
Three Styles
LAPP Line Post Insulators are available in three styles, with a choice of strength classes and wide range
of voltage ratings.
- Horizontal Clamp Top for armless transmission construction
Units consist of a fog-type insulator with a horizontal clamp top cap cemented on the outboard end
for clamp support of the conductor and a large base cemented on the lower end of the insulator for
mounting directly to the side of a pole, without cross arms or other supporting devices.
- Vertical Clamp Top for upright mounting on cross arms
Units have a metal cap cemented to the top of the porcelain to support a trunnion-type clamp for
attaching the conductor. A base cemented to the lower end of the insulator takes a stud for
mounting insulator to cross arm or structure.
- Standard ‘N’ neck for upright mounting on cross arm or structure
Units have an integral “N” neck head on the porcelain for tie top conductor attachment and a base
cemented on the lower end for stud mounting to a flat surface.
Uniformity
The line post design is based on the fog-type design. This design develops a leakage distance on the
principle of uniformity—uniformity of width and uniformity of condition of leakage path (dirtiness,
wetness or dryness). If the leakage path is uniform, local hot spots will not develop to initiate a
flashover.
Uniformity is maintained through maximum exposure to contamination, wetting and natural cleaning
by wind and rain. The many short sheds of the line post design are spaced to avoid pockets where
contamination and moisture can accumulate.
- Under heavy rain, the contamination quickly flushes away and the leakage current falls rapidly
- Under light rain or fog, when flashover is most probable, as the resistance falls, the leakage current
rises
- The watts dissipated are evenly distributed over the entire insulator, drying it uniformly and holding
down the leakage current to a safe value
Puncture
The hazard of puncture is eliminated with the line post insulator design. Under excess voltage, the
insulator will always flash over rather than puncture. There are no thin sections of porcelain subjected
to high electrical stress.
Overload Protection
There are two methods of overload protection for horizontal line posts mounted on rigid structures
from damage caused by unbalanced longitudinal loads, broken conductor conditions or other unusual
longitudinal overloads:
1) Load Limiter: a device which prevents cascading should a unit be accidently overstressed and fail.
It is designed to release and control the conductor on the outboard end of the insulator. The Load
Limiter is available on all horizontal line post insulators—115 kV, 230 kV and 345 kV and for
mounting on steel, pre-stressed concrete and other rigid structures. It is supplied with shear bolts
in a choice of strengths for tangent or angle construction. See pages 20, 28, 33, 36, 41, 42.
2) Hinge Base: Available hinge base designs on all Lapp Horizontal Line Posts 115 kV through 230 kV
provide overload protection for insulators mounted on rigid structures. Mounted to the structure,
the insulator pivots on the hinged base to reduce the load on the insulator caused by unbalanced
longitudinal loads, broken conductor or other unusual overloads. See pages 21, 22, 29, 30, 37, 38,
43, 44.
The semi-conductive glaze is a permanent, integral part of the line post insulator. Applied as part of the
normal manufacturing process, the RG line post insulator is less costly than insulators which are first glazed
with a regular glaze and then covered with a hydrophobic coating.
The RG line post insulator eliminates the need to over-insulate. It holds voltage in environments that
caused flashover in regular insulators having two to three times the leakage distance.

LAPP Insulators is a global leader in advanced compact line insulation designs and production, which allow
electric utilities and transmission operators to cut construction costs, reduce right-of-way, minimize
maintenance and assure maximum operating reliability. Our Compact Line insulation solutions allow the
building of maximum transmission capability into a given right-of-way using LAPP Horizontal Vee
Assemblies, Braced Posts, Line Posts and other assemblies.
The compact, armless Horizontal Vee assembly controls conductor position, supporting the conductor on
tension loaded suspension insulators, and restrains it in position with a strut insulator. LAPP Insulators
offers Horizontal Vee assemblies that meet the requirements for most 115 kV through 500 kV applications.
The flexibility of designs allows for modifications to fit special application requirements using similar basic
components.

LAPP Strut Insulators offer transmission engineers an important design tool for use in building compact
overhead lines or upgrading existing lines to higher voltages. Unlike suspension insulators that are
designed for tension only, struts are rigid assemblies which can take both tension and compression loads.
Struts are not designed for cantilever loading. They can be used to hold conductors away from supporting
transmission towers in unique ways. Controlling the position of the conductor allows for smaller structures
and shorter cross arms, so lines can be built on narrower rights-of-way.
Variety of Lengths
Different lengths can be combined and bolted together to provide assemblies with electrical ratings
equivalent to strings of standard 5 ¾ inch x 10 inch suspension insulators.
- Caps cemented on each end have five-inch bolt circles to fasten units together or to mount to
clamps or adapters
Variety of Fittings
While strut insulators have high tension and compression ratings, they do not have appreciable
strength in bending. Therefore, installations must provide flexible attachments at each end. Clevis or
eye adapters are available for attaching strut insulators to structures. These fittings are galvanized
ferrous castings.
- Aluminum clamps are used to bolt flexible jumpers to strut insulator assemblies
- Strut insulators can be provided with cemented-on end caps for special applications
Jumper Control
Strut insulators provide the ideal control insulators for long jumpers at dead-end towers or
substations. Suspension strings have proved inadequate for this service—especially at higher
voltages—because under light tension loads the loose hardware joints in these assemblies are prone
to corrosion. This results in arcing in the joints and troublesome radio and television interference.
- Strut insulators eliminate loose hardware since they are completely bolted assemblies
- Strut insulators reduce noise
- Can be mounted either vertically or horizontally to support jumper conductors

The silicone polymer RODURFLEX system offers best-in-class Total Cost of Ownership alternative as a
complement to porcelain. With a rich history of development and proven field experience for over 35
years, LAPP Insulators has led the industry in the design, material composition and production of silicone
polymer insulators, leveraging research and development through its German worldwide headquarters.
Installed in more than 70 countries, RODURFLEX is produced at LAPP Insulators’ manufacturing plants in
North America and Europe, offering utilities and transmission operators global production with local
presence.
Outstanding resistance to environmental factors such as UV light, ozone, acid, contamination and
moisture
Interior tensile strength higher than steel, despite weighting approximately 75% less
Worldwide transmission system applications up to 765kV
Design allows for unlimited variable section lengths 20” to 24 feet and leakage distances
Reduced installation costs. No heavy lifting equipment required
High resistance to discharges and leakage currents
Reduced leakage requirements for optimal performance when compared to porcelain, due to
hydrophobic properties
Greater resistance to vandalism
High explosion resistance of hollow insulators in case of internal pressure build-up
Water-repellent, UV and corona-resistant silicone rubber base polymer housing
Pre-molded weathersheds are chemically bonded to the housing, eliminating mold lines and allowing
variable leakage distances for a fixed insulator length
Metal fittings are fixed to the fiber glass core, not the silicone housing for maximum mechanical
strength
Corona ring applied to the metal fittings to protect the housing
Housing is chemically bonded to the fiberglass core
Hydrolysis-resistant resin system applied to the fiberglass reinforced resin rod
3mm-thick high temperature vulcanized (HTV) silicone rubber sheath improves the system’s mechanical
characteristics while reducing FRP rod’s electric field strength;
Metastable silicone sealing system prevents moisture ingress to the FRP rod

Lapp/Pfisterer have combined, more than 60 years of experience in Transmission Assemblies (Transmission
Insulator Strings) at voltages up to 765kV. In addition to designing and supplying transmission assemblies
for general applications we have a proven track record of solving challenging projects involving extremes of
strength requirements, span lengths, large diameter or high temperature conductors, corona free
performance, and special string configurations. Computer based analytical tools together with physical
testing enables us to deliver safe, light and compact solutions to challenging cases.
Transmission insulator assemblies are a convenient way to order a full assembly consisting of all the
material between tower and conductor with one part number. The following assemblies are general
arrangements that are available from Lapp intended to cover most normal applications. These pages are
intended to be filled out with the available information at the time of inquiry, as well as preferences, and
sent back to Lapp as inputs to generate the required specific design. All of the standard pre-engineered
options can be configured into a solution to meet specific requirements. Non-standard assemblies are
engineered to suit special cases.

Fatigue failures of overhead conductor strands due to wind induced vibrations are a well-known problem
which have been observed from the beginning of the last century. The most effective protection device
was invented by George Stockbridge in 1924 in the form of an inertial energy absorber consisting of a
stranded steel cable holding two weights. Since then, Stockbridge’s vibration damper has undergone
several design and manufacturing changes that have increased its performance and endurance. Despite
many other damping devices being invented during the last century, the Stockbridge type vibration damper
is still the best technical and economical solution for the control of overhead cable vibrations within safety
limits.
PFISTERER Lapp has 50 years of experience with the design, manufacture, testing and application of
Stockbridge dampers worldwide in the most severe environmental conditions. A full package is available at
offer stage including a vibration study and the design of the most appropriate damping system for any
specific project. Field vibration measurements can be taken using our Vibrec500 vibration recorder to
evaluate the effectiveness of a damping system. We perform comprehensive type testing in our vibration
laboratory and intensive quality control in the production of our products.

Conductor bundles are used on high voltage transmission lines to fulfil electrical requirements. Spacing devices
are installed on the bundles to maintain sub-conductor separation. Elastic and damping elements are
introduced into the spacing devices for an effective distributed damping effect along the spans while
preventing entrapment of vibrations between Spacer Dampers and avoiding bending stresses at the clamps.
Pfisterer has been developing Spacer Dampers since 1980 to provide the correct damping of wind-induced
vibrations for bundled conductor lines. Modern Spacer Dampers are characterized by an accurate coordination
between the inertial and elastic damping properties. This provides maximum effectiveness in controlling the
levels of sub-conductor motion. A full package is available at offer stage including a vibration study and the
design of the most appropriate damping system for any specific project. Field measurements of aeolian
vibration and subspan oscillation can be taken using our Vibrec500 vibration recorder to evaluate the
effectiveness and correct installation of a damping system. We perform comprehensive type testing in our
vibration laboratory and intensive quality control in the production of our products.

Extreme weather conditions as well as a drive towards line compaction brings with it risk of flashover or
damage to conductors from clashing. Interphase spacers are an effective means of controlling the relative
position of the phases due to these wind induced galloping, ice loading or ice shedding phase motions.
Leveraging its extensive knowledge and experience with composite insulators as well as conductor motion
control, LAPP/PFISTERER offers interphase spacer solutions tailored to each unique application. Numerous
robust and light weight phase motion control systems have been successfully developed across a range of
voltages through EHV.

LAPP Station Post Insulators are available in porcelain and through our Silicone Polymer RODURFLEX® system. They meet
ANSI and IEC leakage requirements. Station posts are also available in high leakage and extra-high leakage versions of
standard units.
Specialty
DC Converter Station Insulation
SIMOTEC Composite Hollow Insulators
1. Hardware
All station posts have externally attached caps and/or bases. A proven cementing system transfers the load uniformly
from the hardware into the porcelain body. Hardware is available in UNC or metric.
2. Porcelain Body
Each insulator body is made from the highest quality clay raw materials that have been processed to be fully vitrified
porcelain. The body is glazed to add strength, improve surface appearance and enhance ease of cleaning.
5. “Straight-line” Flashover
Line terminals are separated by the full length of the insulator so that flashover goes outside the unit. Loss of one or
more sheds does not significantly reduce flashover distance.
Minimum Deflection
Station post insulators provide maximum stiffness in a switch and bus insulator design, an important feature in taller stacks for
higher voltages. Station post stacks for high voltage and EHV are made up of single piece porcelain with externally attached
hardware bolted together in a strong, rigid assembly.
Total Testing
Solid core station post insulators are given a routine mechanical proof test of either four-way cantilever (upright and inverted) or
equal bending moment, depending on the voltage class. Cavity core station posts receive an electrical test in accordance with
ANSI C29.9-1983 Section 7.4.1 before assembly of hardware. After assembly, each cavity core unit is tested mechanically to 50%
of rated tension strength.
Seismic Considerations
LAPP station post designs have low natural frequency and high damping coefficient. These features are important considerations
when seismic criteria are a part of the substation design parameters.

Leakage Distance
- Leakage distance shown in dimensional data for each specific station post conforms to ANSI minimum requirements
- High Leakage: Increased leakage of up to 40% more than ANSI and IEC standards
o An “H” is added to the LAPP Catalog Number; example 315286H-70
- Extra-High Leakage: Increased leakage of more than 40% than ANSI standards
o An “E” is added to the LAP Catalog Number; example 315286E-70
Specifications
- Light Gray-ANSI 70 glaze is standard on all ANSI and IEC station post insulators. Brown glaze is also available.
- The IEEE standard for maximum recommended working load of station posts is:
o 40% of published cantilever rating
o 50% of published torsion rating
o 50% of published tension rating
- For short circuit loads only, the maximum recommended working load is 100% of published ratings when using
formulas from ANSI C37-1972.
- Caps and flanges are made of drop forged steel, malleable iron or ductile iron and hot-dip galvanized.
- Tapped holes are Unified National Coarse Thread Series: 1/2-13, 5/8-11 and 3/4 -10. Holes are tapped 0.15” oversize
to allow for the use of galvanized cap screws
LAPP Station Post insulators are well suited for high voltage, EHV and UHV switch and bus construction because of their strength, rigidity
and adaptability to a wide range of stack heights and Basic Impulse Insulation (BIL) ratings. They are identified by BIL rather than by
voltage class.
Tapered station post stacks are made up of mixed sections of different diameters and strength ratings. They are electrically
equivalent to, and provide the same bending strengths as, uniform-diameter station posts, but are lighter in weight and less
expensive. Tension, torsion and compression values are set by the smallest diameter section and will be less than the values of
uniform-diameter stacks.

LAPP RG Station Post insulators employ a semi-conductor glaze which inhibits arcing and flashover—especially important in
contaminated areas. First installed in the 1970’s, these station posts have an established record of excellent performance in
contamination problem areas with coastal salt fog or mist, industrial pollution and agricultural dust or chemicals.
The semi-conductive glaze is a permanent, integral part of the LAPP RG Station Post insulator. Applied as part of the normal
manufacturing process, the station post insulator is less costly than insulators which are first glazed with a regular glaze and then covered
with a hydrophobic coating.
RG Station Post insulators eliminate the need to over-insulate. They hold voltage in environments that caused flashover in
regular insulators having two to three times the leakage distance.
Heating Effect
- The small current flow over the electrically equivalent resistor created on the surface of an RG Station Post insulator
warms the surface to a few degrees above ambient temperature. This discourages moisture accumulation, and
moisture is usually necessary to make contaminants conductive.
Prevent Dry Band Arcing
Dry bands form on RG Station Post insulators with uneven wetting and drying, just as they do on regular insulators. RG insulators,
however, provide a conductive shunt path across the dry bands, preventing any visible scintillation or arcing. There are no local arcs that
can grow into full length flashover.

900 kV BIL to 3300 kV BIL LAPP Insulator Station Posts
The flashover withstand values are the average of many tests on the same or an equivalent test specimen. Because
they are averages of test values read directly from a test curve, without safety factors commonly associated with
catalog values, they should not be considered as ratings.

Porcelain has very high compressive strength (80,000 psi), sixteen times greater than its tensile strength (5,000 psi). Station
post insulators are designed to take advantage of this strength by avoiding conditions which place porcelain in tension. Cap
and pin insulators can be subject to tensile forces generated between two or more porcelain shells from two possible sources:
“growth” within the cement joint, and thermal expansion differences.
“Growth” within the cement joint can be a result of reactions between the cement and foreign chemical substances, such as
industrial contaminants which may in the service environment of the insulator. As these reactions proceed, the joint swells or
“grows”.
The cap and pin design may employ up to three separate internal joints, and swelling generates bursting (tensile) forces on
the porcelain shells, ultimately leading to cracking.
The station post design uses only external cement joints. Under conditions of “growth”, external joints preclude the
development of tensile stresses on the porcelain. Stresses are comprehensive in nature, loading the porcelain in its strongest
state.
The station post insulator design is simpler than the cap and pin insulator design. Each station post section employs a large,
single piece of porcelain. In contrast, the cap and pin is composed of one to three individual porcelain shells nested together
and joined by cement. The simpler design and use of fewer cemented joints means that station posts are more rigid and exhibit
less deflection under load than do cap and pin insulators, an important feature in switch applications.
Specifications
- Light Gray-ANSI 70 glaze is standard on all Cap and Pin Replacement station post insulators. Brown glaze is also available.
- The IEEE standard for maximum recommended working load is:
o 40% of published cantilever rating
o 50% of published torsion rating
o 50% of published tension rating
- For short circuit loads only, the maximum recommended working load is 100% of published ratings when using formulas
from ANSI C37-1972.
- Caps and flanges are made of drop forged steel, malleable iron or ductile iron and hot-dip galvanized.
- Tapped holes are Unified National Coarse Thread Series: 1/2”-13 and 5/8”-11. Holes are tapped 0.15” oversize to allow for
the use of galvanized cap screws

Data can be used to determine the breakdown strength of air and hence, the insulation level of the air at various altitudes.
The impulse withstand at 10,000 feet will be the Relative Air Density x the Impulse Withstand at Sea Level. Therefore,
BIL at 10,000 feet = 250 x 0.72 = 180 BIL.
This example can be applied to any electrical value, except Switching Surge.
