Standard - 3.2.10.B2
Explain how the overall energy flowing through a system remains constant.
Standard - 3.2.10.B6
Explain how the behavior of matter and energy follow predictable patterns that are defined by
laws.
Standard - CC.2.3.HS.A.12
Explain volume formulas and use them to solve problems.
B. At the conclusion of the lesson, students will be able to apply Pascal’s fluid power Law
when constructing a hydraulic robotic arm with 100% efficiency.
Essential Questions:

1. What are different examples of fluid power systems?
3. What are the similarities and differences between hydraulics and pneumatics?
Content Outline:
a. Pascal’s Law
a. When there is an increase in pressure at any point in a confined fluid,
there is an equal increase at every other point in the container.
b. Charles’ Law
a. When the pressure on a sample of a dry gas is held constant, the Kelvin
temperature and the volume will be directly related.
c. Boyle’s Law
a. The pressure and volume of a gas have an inverse relationship, when
temperature is held constant.
d. Bernoulli’s Principle
a. An increase in the speed of a fluid occurs simultaneously with a
decrease in pressure or a decrease in the fluid's potential energy
Students will be assessed on the learned content of fluid power laws by completing a fluid
power practice sheet. Students will show participation skills through a class discussion to
review previously learned content, they will also be assessed on their content knowledge
through participating as a class in a Kahoot!

Procedures:
START: (All computer materials such as the PowerPoint will be set up on the projector, fluid power
practice sheets ready)
o Students will begin by reviewing the expectations and rules of the Robo Hoop Hydraulic
Arm Challenge.
o Students will then complete the fluid power practice sheet individually.
o The practice sheet will be reviewed as a class to make sure all the content has been
covered and to allow time for follow up questions.
o The students will participate in a Kahoot! To help reinforce the content they’ve learned.
o Teacher will review all of the deadlines and remind the students of the quiz tomorrow.
The students will then be allowed to work on their hydraulic arms in their design groups.
Differentiating Instruction: This lesson incorporates many different strategies that can
engage all learners during instruction and attempt to meet individual needs. Strategies include:
3. Walking around to make sure all students are engaged and comprehending the activity
4. Asking the class for answers and probing them for more detail when needed
a. The Fluid Power Practice Sheet target both visual and verbal learners. The
questions were formulated to challenge those who struggle with visualization
skills as well as written communication skills. The goal of this worksheet was to
allow the students to further their knowledge of the content while allowing them
to excel at the questions that feed into their learning style and challenge
themselves with the questions that may not be their learning style.
