EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Banking is today an integral part of our everyday life. At home, at school,

at office, at business, on travel everywhere we counter some aspect of banking. The
significance of banking in our day to day life is being felt increasingly. Money plays a
dominant role in today’s life. A money economy existed in India since the days of
Buddha. The forms of money have been evolved from coin to paper currency notes and
now to credit cards. It also throws light on living style, political and cultural aspects of
civilized mankind.

The Indian banking industry has evolved and transformed itself from a
socialist licensed Raj business to a liberalized, modernized & technology oriented white
elephant of India. The Government of India issued an ordinance and nationalized the 14th
largest commercial banks with effect from the midnight of July 19, 1969. As a result
“Banking Revolution”, the outdated concepts and methods of banking in India have
changed to its peak level. The Indian banking sector came into the developing nature
mostly after the 1991 government policy.

With the second dose of nationalization, the Government of India

controlled around 91% of the banking business of India. Banking industry is the
backbone for any economy and is the key indicator to see and analyze the level of
development of a country. The banking sector of India has an annual growth rate of 23%,
contributing nearly 6% of GDP & employing nearly 7.4 million people and has
outperformed most banking indices in the world with highest total returns to shareholders
at 36.76%.
