The AMX 30 has been the Main Battle Tank
of the French military for over thirty-
years, entering service in 1975 before
being replaced by the Leclerc MBT in the
late 1990s. The AMX 30 design utilised
smaller size and mobility as a trade-of
for heavy armour as the French believed
that a heavily armed, lightly armoured,
mechanically reliable tank had the best
chance to dominate future battleields.

have added individual leaves to give a more
realistic efect, but I was content that it looks

The diorama base was an old picture
frame, and I removed the glass and put a cut
piece of plywood into the hole. Into this I
poured some Plaster of Paris before covering
with cling ilm. When partially dry I pressed in
the Super Pershing and bunker as well as the
trees and Dragons Teeth. The cling ilm allows
you to then remove these items, allowing for
easier painting later on. With the cling ilm
removed I brushed on a coat or white glue
and scattered on ine sand, plaster dust and
small stones. The whole ‘bare’ base was given
various coats of mud brown and dark washes
before being sealed with a matt varnish. The
bushes around the bunker were made from
the same materials at the tree branches,
with various lowers and weeds added
in there from the ‘scenery box’. For

weeds were again mix of types and lengths to give a varied
visual efect. I also added some forest scatter
underneath the trees.
With the base complete I used CA to
attach the tank, trees and bunker before
itting the igures around these. It was
originally my intention to have the Super
Pershing facing forwards, but this ended up
with the gun being turned over the top of
the resting troops, partially obscuring them
from view. The tank was then turned around,
which also gives the added beneit of being
able to see what the maintenance troops
are doing. To further this I added tools from
the Diopark Factory tools set. I added the
‘Hitler Dead’ newspaper and German helmet
for time and action context, as well as a few
other papers and magazines printed on my
own printer. The playing cards are provided
in the Miniart Resting Troops set.
So, just under two years in the making
(with periods of downtime) and some
pretty big steps away from what I’m normal
comfortable with.

A Skyraider was considered one of the finest attack and close air support aircraft ever built.
Skyraider’s proved critical during the Korean War and over the jungles of North Vietnam. The
airplane that became the AD Skyraider (redesignated A-1 in 1962) evolved from a 1943 Navy decision to
combine the dive-bombing and torpedo mission into one aircraft. First flown in 1945, the Skyraider entered
US Navy service the following year. Later nicknamed ‘Spad’ for its ‘old-school’ design and appearance,
reminiscent of the famous World War I aircraft, the Skyraider earned a reputation for ruggedness that not
only packed a punch, but also brought back many an airman, despite taking heavy damage from enemy fire.
Some AD pilots also trained for an atomic war, practicing long-range flights to deliver nuclear bombs at low
altitude. A-1s were also part of the first attacks against North Vietnam following the Tonkin Gulf Incident, and
in June 1965, a pair of Skyraiders even shot down a North Vietnamese MiG-17 in air-to-air combat. It was
perhaps in the ‘Sandy’ Combat Search And Rescue role the USAF Skyraider earned most respect, and its heavy
payload and long loiter time proved vital in rescue of downed airman in Southeast Asia. The Skyraider was
also used by the air forces of South Vietnam, France, Cambodia, Chad and Gabon, and the Royal Navy
operated a dedicated airborne early warning version from her aircraft carriers, and the Swedish Air Force used
the Skyraider as a target tug. All told, 3,180 Skyraiders rolled off the Douglas Aircraft Company assembly line,

the new vehicle the nickname of ‘Želva’,

the autumn of 1923 twelve vehicles were
ordered, to be delivered from December
1924 and until mid-1925. Although the
chassis was roughly identical to the
experimental PA-I, the PA-II’s armoured body
was entirely new. It had unusually curved

Many Western defence companies seeing
what they though was a golden opportunity
also offered upgrade packages. These though
often proved simply too expensive for countries
trying to cut back their defence budgets at the
end of the Cold War. Few could be enticed
when the cost was more than the original value
of the tank. Egypt with 1,000 T-54/55 seemed
potentially a prime customer and was courted by
many western firms. Ambitious Egyptian plans
included the American Ramses II programme
as well as the German Jung Jungenthal upgrade
but neither got beyond the prototype stage
during the 1980s. Once the Egyptians had been
gifted American M60 tanks and began building
the American M1A1 Abrams in the 1990s such
requirements swiftly fell by the way side. Almost
two decades later despite being superfluous the
Ramses II armed with a 105mm gun finally
appeared in 2005 with several hundred tanks
upgraded. After sixty-years of continuous service
the T-54/55 continued to soldier on in various
parts of the world. Remarkably the T-54/55 was
so popular that it even outlasted its successor the
T-62. It remained in production for over thirty
years until 1981 by which time worldwide well
over 75,000 had been built, easily outstripping

had been built when production ended six years
earlier in 1975. One of the reasons for this was
that the T-62 cost as much as three times to
produce and the only real advantage it could offer
was its larger gun. All its other capabilities were
broadly comparable.
The hugely successful T-54/55 was built or
assembled in at least a dozen factories, including
Nizhniy Tagil in Russia, Omsk in Russia, the
Malyshev plant in Kharkov in Ukraine, ZTS
Martin in Czechoslovakia, Bumar-Labedy in
Poland, Bucharest/Bra ov in Romania, Baotou,
Beijing, Changchun and Harbin in China and
Taxila in Pakistan. Combined they produce
in the region of 80,000 to 100,000 tanks. It
is impossible to be precise as the Soviets and
Chinese never issued oficial production igures.
In the late 1970s the US Department of Defence
estimated that the Soviet Union was building Destroyed Serbian T-55 in Bosnia in 1997

3,000 tanks a year with another 800 produced

by the Non-Soviet Warsaw Pact countries. This
output included the T-62 and T-72. The secret
behind the T-54/55’s incredible success, like
the T-34/85, was its simplicity. It was relatively
easy and cheap to build unlike its increasingly
complex and costly successors. Outside the Soviet
Union the T-62 was only built by Czechoslovakia
for export, the T-64 was only ever produced in
the Soviet Union and never exported. A number
of foreign manufacturers, but never in the same
quantities as the T-54/55 built the subsequent
T-72 and T-80. While Moscow never released any
oficial igures for T-54/55 production, it has been
estimated that the Soviet Union alone built about
50,000. China, Czechoslovakia, Poland and
Romania produced another 27,000 bringing total
numbers to around 77,000. Some sources even
put the total global igure as high as 100,000. This
beats hands down T-34 numbers, even allowing
for post war T-34 construction by Czechoslovakia
and Poland, amounting to about 60,000. This
makes the T-54/55 the most widely used tank in
history – a quite remarkable achievement.

I wanted to show a dirt road with bits of grass
here and there. On the higher points, I scattered
some NOCH Static Grass, Woodland Scenics Fine
Turf and Coarse Turf.
Then I went further by adding a layer of mud
onto the terrain. This was achieved by mixing
Golden Heavy Gel Medium with dried soil,
tealeaves, pencil shreds and static grass, and I
tinted it with XF- 52 Flat Earth. I wanted to show
diferent shades of soil so I did this in several
layers. To alter the base earth color, I added a
small drop of Flat Black and A.MIG.3007 Dark
Earth. Using an old brush, I plastered the areas
where most traic would go with this mud mix.
The deepest crevasses were given some ponds of
water using Woodland Scenics Water Efect tinted
with XF-60 Dark Yellow. It took almost two days
before the Water Efect dried to a clear translucent
water body.

The vignette shows tankers in a relaxed

pose. I found that I could easily combine
igures from Tamiya US Tank Crew Set #347
and Dragon’s version #6238. The igures
from Tamiya are just gorgeous but they
are signiicantly taller than the ones from
Dragon, so I had to ind a way to hide the
diferences. The tankers were painted per the
box instructions. I laid a coat of White Primer
before spraying the coveralls and the jackets
acrylic XF-60 Dark Yellow, and the trousers
XF-58 Olive Green. The lesh was given XF-
15 Flat Flesh, boots XF-64 Red Brown, and
tanker helmets Olive Drab. Everything else
beyond this was painted using oil paints.
The I raided my ‘spares-box’ for some oil
drums, ammunition boxes and jerry cans,
which were painted and then glued in place
before they were washed and dry-brushed.
To blend them with the base, I weathered
them with mud and splatter using A.MIG.1409

all ixed, I added some food crates, a wheel
of cheese, some wine bottles, sliced cured
meat and baguette around the base. I also
added some pre-cut combat ration boxes
from J’s Work. Some were placed on vehicle
and props, but others were scattered on the
ground to simulate litter. Next it was time to
arrange the igures. This was a bit challenging
as I kept iddling on where to best place the
commander. Once satisied, I glued all the
three igures in place, weathered them, and
added some mud to their boots and lightly
misted the igures with Dark Yellow and Flat
Earth. Final touches included adding a July
1944 issue of Yank magazine and Stars and
Stripes newspaper.
This was deinitely a real challenge as I only
build aircraft or tanks! Building a diorama
was a totally diferent experience, and really
pushed my skills and knowledge.

just love the StuG, its big, brutish and a great

weathering techniques. I looked at the Dragon kit
but thought it too expensive, but the Tamiya kit is
equally good at a reasonable price. I added some Kaizen tracks, and a
few other items, such as wires from the headlights and some stowage
on the rear. As well as a very neat little signpost! The kit was a

BUCCANEER S.1. S.2 and Mk.50
MDF Scaled Down #6
By Andy Evans
Built by Blackburn at Brough, the Buccaneer epitomises the very
essence of the fast, low-level ground attack concept, coupled with an
inherently stable ride. The Buccaneer was designed in the late 1950’s
as a low-level, long range, high speed, strike/attack/recce aircraft for
carrier operations. It was produced in two main variants, the S.1 and
the much improved and more powerful S.2, serving with both the
Royal Navy and later the RAF from 1965 to 1994. Having enjoyed a
successful, albeit relatively uneventful, career with the Royal Navy, the
Buccaneer realised its true potential with the RAF and South African
Air Force where it soon proved itself to be an immensely strong,
manoeuvrable and reliable aircraft with a better speed, range and
weapons carrying capability than many others. This was borne out
during the many NATO exercises but came to public attention during
Operation ‘Granby’ in the Gulf War. Here twelve Buccaneers were
dispatched at three days notice, initially to laser designate targets
for Tornado bombers, and later in the campaign, they acted as both
Tornado designators and bombers in their own right whilst carrying
out missions dropping their own 1000lb LGB’s. In total the type
flew 216 Gulf sorties, destroying numerous bridges, aircraft shelters,

runways, command bunkers, ammunition stores and even

other aircraft. The Buccaneer was prematurely withdrawn
from service in 1994 as a result of arms reduction talks and
the subsequent rationalisation of RAF assets, being replaced
in the maritime strike role by more modern Tornado IDS
aircraft. This new MDF Scaled Down from SAM Publications
takes you into the heart of the Buccaneer, as we go faster,
lower, longer!
