TROUBLE IN PARADISE
Charlie Pritchett describes how Takom's 1:35 ZSU-57-2 goes together

T
akom became the first manufacturer to release
the Russian ZSU-57-2 in injection plastic in 2016,
followed soon after by another example from
Trumpeter. Until then, the only kit available was the
very complex multimedia offering by Jadar/Armo, which
was featured back in Issue 131 (September 2006) of
MiM's sister title, Tamiya Model Magazine. Although
Takom’s kit assembles quickly and easily, it was left in sub-
assemblies to aid in painting (as was the Jadar/Armo kit
for the same reason).
Adding the beautiful set of turned brass gun barrels
from Magic Models was the only deviation from building
the Takom kit straight from the box. Ammo by Mig
Jimenez offers no less than eleven markings-options for
this kit, including examples serving with the Soviet Army,
German NVA, Finnish Army, Serbian Army, Syrian Army,
Egyptian Army, Kurdish Peshmerga, and two different
options each for the North Vietnam Army & Iranian
Army. Having made an Iranian Army subject previously,
this time I opted for a weapon serving with the North
Vietnam Army during the Vietnam War. The model was
painted and weathered using the extensive range of
finishing products offered by Ammo of Mig Jimenez, but
the metallic finishes were achieved using Alclad and Rub
The open turret housing the complex gun & full
'n Buff. The finished model was dressed up with photo-
ammunition load dictated that the ZSU-57-2
kit was not completely assembled until after etched foliage by Verlinden Productions (sadly no longer
painting & weathering. The wheels & tracks available) and a crew was selected from the excellent
were also not permanently fixed until later Vietnamese resin manufacturer Paracel Miniatures
(VN0215 & VNO515). The photos & captions illustrate
how it was all done. •

All of the interior

white elements
were given a basic
colour-wash to serve
as the foundation for
weathering. This first wash
was applied multiple times
Painting commenced by airbrushing the interior of the turret with matt until the desired intensity was
white, followed by a thin coat of gloss white achieved. Heavier and darker local
washes were applied next to suggest
a well-used fighting compartment

The internal ammunition clips were first given a coat of gloss black primer, followed by a coat of AMMO The shells were finished by painting them Matt Black, then lightly dry-brushed with silver. The first shell in
Polished Brass each clip was given a red tip to indicate a tracer round

After completing the white interior, the exterior and gun assembly were painted in three shades of green, starting with the darkest and finishing with the lightest.
The darkest shade served as an overall primer, while the lightest shade was used to highlight panels and shapes

A slightly lighter shade of green was applied to various details with a brush before airbrushing A dark green wash was applied to add more depth to the exterior details
a clear gloss coat to the exterior of the model

Using a sponge, the original Dark

Green used as the base colour
was applied as a form of chipping,
suggesting the oxidized green
paint has been polished by crew
traffic. A brush was then used
to unify and expand the effect
created with the sponge

To suggest accumulated dry mud and

dust, first a coat of Chipping Fluid was
applied with the airbrush, followed by a
suitable earth tone.
A brush moistened with tap water was
used to gently remove much of the
previous application of earth pigment

PAINTING PROJECT - TAMIYA 1:35 SOMUA S35 • KIT NO.35344

BON VIVANTE, EN COULEUR!

T
Jaffe Lam describes the stages of he Somua S35 was rated the best tank in France,
in its day. At the beginning of Battle of France in
painting a WW2 French Army 1940, over 400 S35s were in service with the
French Army against German's invasion. It was
camouflage, using Tamiya's superb fast, reliable, well-armoured, with good range of action
and equipped with a remarkable cannon (47mm SA35
1:35 Somua S35 as a palette L/32). The construction of its hull was by three cast
sections bolted together. This bolted joint design, though
adopted to be an significant design improvement, was
also a fatal weakness. When hit by anti-tank fire, the
hull would be split open.
The camo schemes of French's Somua commonly
seen were the multi-colour horizontal band patterns. The
scheme of this tank, however, belonged to the First Light
Cavalry Division with its three colour bands in vertical
direction separated by thin black accents. Its pattern
was Somua's factory painting scheme and was used
prior to the lateral direction pattern period.

THE BUILD
As we would expect with any Tamiya kit, this
Somua is a nice offering for a quick build.
Everything fitted perfectly and Tamiya has nicely
reproduced the cast texture of the tank. One thing
worth mentioning was that Tamiya has arranged
all sprue connection points without touching any
cast texture, saving us much time in touching up
the texture here and there after assembly. The kit
was basically built straight from the box with some
upgrades. The straps of the side stowage were
replaced with thin metal sheets, metal mesh was
added to the right side headlight and the projecting
towing hook was modified to a closed position. With a few coats of black primer,
0.4mm Micron Masking Tape was
TIME FOR COLOUR applied following the black accent
strip patterns
Once the build was completed, I turned to
painting. The model was first primed with Mr.
Finishing Surfacer Black. To retain the thin black
accent stripes of the camo scheme, I applied
0.4mm Micron Masking Tape following its Mr Base White was applied to
contour pattern. I then sprayed Mr. Base White give the model a black and white
on the black base to achieve the black and pre-shaded effect
white pre-shading. This provided a high contrast
background for me to apply the base paint. I
first sprayed the yellow bands using a mix of
Tamiya acrylics (XF-2 + XF-60) thinned with Gunze
self-levelling thinner, adding a bit of X-22 for a
smooth finish. Next, I mixed XF-60 with XF-65 and
sprayed the green band with the previous yellow
band covered with Humbrol Maskol. When the
green colour was completely dry, I masked it off
and sprayed the remaining brown band using
a mixture of XF-10 and XF-60. When all three
camo colours thoroughly dried, all masking was
removed. To be honest, I was a bit nervous on
how it turned out. Fortunately, I was quite pleased
with the result. The French army defence against
The yellow base paint
invasion didn't last long, the tank paint therefore
was a mixture of Tamiya
wouldn't have suffered noticeable fading and XF-60 and XF-2
hence I painted the base colour rather 'new'.

The yellow was masked off with Humbrol

Maskol and a mix of green consisting of
Tamiya XF-60 and XF-65 was applied

The brown was mixed using

HIGHLIGHTING THE DETAILS

With the three colour camo done, I applied
Lifecolor acrylics with a lighter shades than the
base colour in order to pick up all raised details
including bolts, lifting eyes and handles. The whole
model was then protected with thin coats of satin
varnish and the decals were applied. The French
sign was from the provided decal sheet, while the
license number plate (67257) was printed from
Fine Molds white blank decal sheet. At this stage, I
found the yellow base colour was looking too pale.
Therefore, I misted thin coats of Humbrol Cream
103 enamel to add some yellow tint and also
took the chance to blend all the three colour in a
harmonic way. After that, I applied some filters to
add subtle tonal variation.
The tactical number '14' was sprayed using a
template cut from masking tape. I was satisfied
with the outcome so far and I moved onto pin-
wash with Winsor and Newton Raw Umber
and Burnt Umber oils to accentuate all details.
Adding more colour richness, I applied various
colour speckles by flicking Lifecolor acrylics.
As I preferred subtle tonal changes, I chose Prominent details were picked up with brighter Lifecolor acrylics
colour close to base colours For yellow tone,
I used Lifecolor UA202, UA204 and UA706
and sparingly flicked on the yellow band areas.
Similar approach was applied for the green and
brown bands. Using this method to create vague
colour variations, I was very cautious controlling
the thickness and amount of paint used. I found
that if the paint was too thick, the paint dots will
be too obvious and you can count every single
paint dot. If too much paint was flicked, the base
colour would be entirely changed. The flicked
surface was then blended with oils. Again, I
selected oil colours only closed to each base
colour tones.

With a rich coat of

The yellow base was too pale so several

thin coats of Humbrol Cream 103 were
misted on to enhance the yellow shade
and also in an attempt to blend the camo
colours with a more harmonic tone

p 16-21 Somua 082MN 18 21/12/2017 12:13

RESTORING COLOUR INTENSITY
Tiny paint speckles were flicked After the vigorous weathering process, I found
to add blurry tonal variations the model had lost a certain amount of contrast
and depth. To this end, I restored the highlights
and shadows using oils including Titanium White,
Yellow Ochre, Sap Green and Raw Umber. For
yellow band, the highlight was Yellow Ochre +
Titanium White, and the shadow was Yellow Ochre
+ Raw Umber. For green band, the highlight was
Sap Green + Yellow Ochre, and the shadow was
Sap Green. For brown, the highlights and shadows
were Yellow Ochre and Raw Umber respectively.
With the oils thoroughly dried, I started depicting
the paint chips using Lifecolor grey shades acrylics
and its Dust and Rust Diorama Set. Lifecolor paints
were a bit runny, so in order to achieve solid
chips, I left the paint let dry for a while before use.
Chipping was more intense on heavily used areas
including suspension, lower hull, fenders, hatch for
crew access, horizontal surfaces of the upper hull
which the crews usually step on.

Oil dots was applied for further blending Oils were applied sparingly at raised and shadowed areas to maintain colour contrast

Chippings were added using a mix of Lifecolor dark grey acrylics and the Dust and Rust Diorama Set The suspension was a location where grease and dirt collected and to mimic the streaking, Raw Umber and
Burnt Umber oils were used

Lifecolor Dust and Rust Diorama Set together with Burnt Umber and Black were used for painting the bare Friulmodel metal tracks was first treated with Ammo Burnishing Fluid, followed by some dark brown and
metal parts rust tone oil rendering

PAINTING PROJECT - TAMIYA 1:35 SOMUA S35 • KIT NO.35344

After that, I applied more Raw Umber, Burnt

Umber and Burnt Sienna oils for vertical streaking.
The bare metal parts were painted with Lifecolor
dark brown shades and Dust and Rust Diorama
Set. The original track set were replaced with
Friulmodel tracks, darkened with Ammo Burnishing
Fluid. I found the darkening process was quite easy
to control using this fluid. In fact, I have diluted the
fluid with water in a ratio of 1:1. The tracks were
further treated with rusty oil washes using Burnt
Sienna, Burnt Umber and Raw Umber. To finish off,
I used an electric polisher to polish the treads which
were in contact with the ground.
To give the Somua a dusty appearance, I
applied AK Interactive Rainmarks over the whole
model. It was then worked away with thinner
leaving only light traces of "dust". The pigments
of this product were quite rough leaving a very
convincing dust 'texture'. I repeated this process
and concentrated more on the horizontal surface
and at locations where dust accumulated. With an
old brush, I prepared the mud by mixing Liquitex
Ceramic Stucco, white plaster and Humbrol
Enamels. Various brands of pigments were used
to add more colours Wet mud was replicated by
AK Interactive Engine Grime and Fresh Mud. For a
final touch, AK Interactive Fuel Stains and Engine AK Interactive Rainmarks

LIVE RESIN, RUSSIA

Live Resin offer a huge range of accessories and upgrade parts for modern Soviet military applications, as
well as for other nations’ hardware too. Recently arrived from this manufacturer are sets for the Tiger APC,
from gun turrets and radar masts to anti-sniper systems and interior stowage racks. If you have the Zvezda
or Meng kit, these sets will make the ideal detail update. As the company name suggests, the items are
cast in polyurethane resin and carry some exquisitely fine detail. Fantastic stuff.

LIFECOLOR, ITALY
Two new paint sets are on release from
Lifecolor; six shades for British WW2
uniforms and the same number of paints for
Russian infantry uniforms (it should really
say ‘Soviet’ to reflect the diversity of nations
who fought under the Red Flag), also from
the WW2 era. It’s remarkably difficult to mix
these colours with accuracy and variation;
one can get close, but if the greens are
even slightly off, they can look wrong on a
figure. Well done to Lifecolor for coming up
with them. They can be airbrushed or hand-
painted and dry with a fully matt finish.

Some more shapes and grades have been added
to the extensive range from UMP. This time we
have two-sided buffers which in two operations
can buff out scratches and light scoring in most
plastics, which is extremely useful. They come as
standard stick-form (triple pack) and as ‘skinny’
buffers (six-pack, double-sided 3,000/12,000 grit)
for those smaller areas.

MODELLING TECHNIQUES - KNOCKED-OUT ARMOUR MIG PRODUCTIONS 1:35 T-34 • KIT NO.35-018

SILENT WITNESS TO WAR

Dustin Dias weathers-up a KO'd T34 resin kit from Mig Productions

T
his classic kit is a very interesting model that includes step-by-
step instructions. It can be used in many areas of modelling
such as a backdrop for another tank or just built by itself.
I wanted my T-34 to tell a story of the hardships of war.
Sadly this was the story of many other T-34s that stood no chance
against the barrel of a Tiger I's 88mm gun.
After construction I wanted more damage, like a pierced hull
and pockmarks. I used a temperature-controlled soldering iron to
accomplish the welds. I used an aerosol red oxide primer (enamel)
to break the surface tension of the resin because I used acrylic
paints from Mig Productions. I used a mixture of olivgrun 002 and
resedagrun 003 to create the colour I wanted. Keep in mind when Some of the varied materials used to create texture
on the groundwork
using acrylics that you must apply them in thin layers, building
them up gradually. Once the model was coated in this mixture I
started to highlight certain areas with the rust colours, blending
them to form an intentional inconsistency from dark to light.
Once the acrylics were dry, I used Winsor & Newton oil colours
to begin the weathering and streaking effects. I also used pigments
when working with the oils.
A final application of oils and pigments was made and using
the flicking/splattering technique they were able to be blended
over the entire model in thin, transparent layers giving the model a Some of the colours used to create the rust effects
interesting finish. With a mild thinner I was able to manipulate the
oils and pigments further blending giving a burnt looking finish.

THE DIORAMA
For the groundwork I used a mixture of topsoil, coffee grounds
and dark earth pigment mixed together with clear Elmers Glue
and water. Once the model had been pushed into its environment
I used some dry topsoil and pigment (with the base still wet) to
create some texture to the ground and also at this point I added
some moss and roots, blending them into the ground further giving
it life. Last I used some ash from the fire pit outside and Pledge
Floorcare varnish to secure everything in place. Job done, a
knocked-out T-34 with a sad story to tell. • Mig Productions acrylics were employed to create
the final finish of the T34

the moulded deck anchors and replaced them with

the stern gave me the most satisfaction. It allowed
me to take my limited knowledge of late war
technology and adapt it to this 'what if' vehicle.
The convoy light and aerial mount were replaced,
the former with Voyager PE and 0.047" rod, the
latter with a spare and some lead wire. I added

on those of a Hetzer. Bass wood was soaked in
thin CA to prevent 'fuzzing' and sanded to shape.
The straps and bracket are 0.005" strip. The jack
itself is from a Cyber-hobby OVM tool set, detailed

vertical mount is copied from a late war Panther.
Besides the suspension, another innovative
feature planned for the E-10 was a fold-out stern.

some bolts the rear compartment could be opened
to remove the engine. I replaced the kit’s rather sad

offering, with a barrel of 0.5 mm brass tube.

Much of the assembly was accomplished using
five-minute epoxy applied with a tiny 0.005" wire;
it allows plenty of time for adjustments. The unit is
locked at an angle, otherwise it would block the
commander’s hatch from opening.
I had planned to attach a standard fifty-round
ammo drum to the left side of the MG, but there
was no way it would fit. ET Model illustrates a belt
feed, but even so, I wondered how easily the gun
could be serviced in this configuration. Of the few
photos I found of a Scheinwerfer with a '42 or a
'34 none were loaded, so I lazily did the same.
Erzatz Munitionskasten/Staukasten für Infrarot-

Whether the trailer was to haul ammunition or
the Scheinwerfer it needed to be small enough
that an E-10 could tow it, and low in height.
Tristar’s 20mm Flak 38 kit came with a small
Sd.Ah.51 trailer and munitions box and it fitted
the requirements perfectly. I especially liked the
possibility of conveying the modular design of the
trailer by painting it differently to the box.
The bottom bumpers were replaced with thinner
brass strip and the folding lid brackets with 0.005"
strip and Grandt Line nuts. The handles are 0.012"
brass wire and the PE latches are Voyager spares. I
could not find any images detailing the rear hatch,
so I closed it over. The tools usually stowed on the
box were deleted.

SD.AH.51 ANHÄNGER
Unlike the Munitionskasten, the internet was
replete with photos of the Sd.Ah.51 trailer. The
Tristar kit was sound but lacked the minute detail
I enjoy reproducing. The first thing I did was to
obtain Panzer Art wheels. After breaking an air
valve I replaced them with thin rod. The fender
edges were thinned and their mounting brackets
replaced with 0.005" card. Master Club bolts were
swapped for the 'soft' moulded rivets. The fender
boxes were improved with 0.005" styrene trim and
Verlinden latches. Mud flaps were added - thin lead
foil embossed with a beading tool after folding
over the top edge. Electrical sockets were added
to the frame and their guards made from 0.020"
copper wire. The leaf springs were detailed and
new front hangers built, capped with Master Club
slotted hex nuts; this company’s miniscule castings
are amazing. Munitionskasten/Staukasten
(ammunition box/storage box)
The most taxing fabrication was the trailer’s with some additional detailing
tongue, with its double jointed retractable rest and
articulated coupler. It took a while to discern how
it all worked. The stand was built from styrene rod
and brass tube. The kit’s coupler was reshaped
and pinned to a carved cap, with another Master
Club nut. I wondered why there was no chain on
the retaining pin for the cargo box. Then I realized
its bracket contained a spring fitting. And there
we have it, a hull-down, nocturnal tank killer; a
satisfying project. •

Tamiya has re-issued the recent 1:35 M4A3E8, this time with Korean War-

larger and driven by a Zündapp 703cc motorcycle engine, in order
to carry a heavier demolition charge.
The kit features link-and-length tracks and the single links are
truly tiny; tweezers will be needed during their assembly, although
thankfully the suspension is moulded integrally with each side panel.
Two complete Goliath models are included in the box, which is a
nice bonus, although no transport trailer is provided.
The control cable compartment features a separate hatch with
cable reel inside; a length of copper wire comes in the box, plus the
control box for the operator, allowing the vehicle(s) to be modelled
'in action' with their crew. Detail is subtle and in-scale throughout.
Three figures come with the set and they are very much in
Tamiya's new style, with natural poses, realistically creased uniforms
and excellent hands. The latter are so often moulded as simple
blobs and can ruin the look of otherwise decent figures; Tamiya's
are very well done. The kit also comes with a range of infantry
equipment, including the Karabiner K98 rifle, MP40 sub-machine
gun, binoculars, P.08 Luger holster/magazine pouch, bread-bag TAMIYA 1:35 US SELF-PROPELLED HOWITZER M109A6 PALADIN

and can be assembled and painted quickly for a satisfying result. • This is the latest release in the popular Tamiya-Italeri series and it further

This kit takes the classic 1:25 scale Centurion Mk.III kit from 1973 (30614)
and turns it into an RC model! Even better, the export version (outside of Japan)
features parts to allow the turret to be controlled too. Kit length: 385mm.
Dedicated RC unit: TTU-10 transmitter and MC-07 receiver/motor control unit,
both with built-in antennae. The model is powered by an assembly type twin
motor gearbox and Type 130 motors, offering forward and rear motion plus a

BEUTE
IN BERLIN!
Kreangkrai Paojinda takes Dragon's
ageing ISU-152 kit and depicts it
as a 'what if' machine in German
service during the Battle of Berlin

T
he ISU-152 was a Soviet self-propelled gun
developed and used during World War II. It
was used as mobile artillery to support the
more mobile infantry and armour attacks
in the late war years; many ISU-152 were used
during the Battle of Berlin in 1945. So, here's the
concept for this project. What if, before the war
had finished, the Germans counter attacked the
liberating Soviet forces and many ISU-152s were
wrecked or left behind? The Germans might have
captured one and field-modified it, returning it to
combat and fighting back.

ASSEMBLY
The ISU-152 from Dragon (6803) is an older kit
from 1994 and I built it around ten years ago.
I chose to use it again for this idea, but with
plenty of modifications. On the upper hull I used
a modelling knife to remove all of the fenders
and mudguards. I re-built the engine grilles using
0.3mm Tamiya plastic sheet and on the rear plate
I added two German 200L fuel drums. On the hull
top, I replaced the commander's cupola with one
from a Panther Ausf.G and also remade all the
welding seams using epoxy putty, which makes
the model that much more realistic. Following the
'what if' concept, I added wire-mesh schürzen
stand-off armour. I used a photo-etched set from
ET Model (E35091) for a Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.J (Late
Version) which is very well detailed and easy to
build. The brackets for the schürzen were
a DIY job and I also fitted some
solid armour plates makes to
suggest that this field-modified ISU
was given any armoured protection
that the maintenance teams could find. The final
step of the build sequence was to create a textured
armour surface. I applied Tamiya putty mixed with
some black colour plus Mr.Color thinner to create
the cast steel finish on the steel plate and mantlet. The grey of the Dragon kit is
in evidence here; note the dark
grey of the enhanced weld seams

PAINTING
I began the painting the kit by applying a primer
base-coat using Mr.Surfacer 1000 spray and once
it dried, I then airbrushed Mr.Color mixes to create
the shades for the dark rust, light rust and steel
colour undercoat. I used the 'hairspray technique',
applying the fluid with an airbrush which is better
for controlled application in small scales. When
it was dry I painted the model Russian green,
mixed from AMMO by Mig Olivgrün (A.MIG-002,
RAL6003), Vallejo Camouflage Light Green (006)
and Vallejo White. I also created a highlight colour
with the latter material. The vehicle number '339'
was hand-painted using Vallejo flat white. A rust-coloured base coat
I then began the painting of the German parts; was applied first, using
the Panther Cupola, wire mesh schürzen and Mr Color paints
the 200L fuel drums. I applied AMMO by Mig
Dunkelgelb (A.MIG-011, RAL7028) for a base
tone and then I airbrushed the camouflage using
a mixture of Vallejo Model Air Tank Brown (041)
and Hull Red to create the rotbraun colour and
Vallejo Model Air Camouflage Light Green (006)
for the Olivgrün portion of the scheme. Once it
was all dry, I applied 'Chipping Worn Effects'
fluid and applied the wide bands of dunkelgelb
across the vehicle's hull. Tamiya X-20A thinners
and water (mixed 70/30) was used
with a paintbrush and toothpick
to create realistic scratches and
paint scoring. Next up were the
weld lines, and to paint these I used
Gunze Silver (N8), hand painted with a brush.
For the final step in the painting process I sprayed
Gunze Semi-Gloss clear over the whole model, in
readiness for the weathering.

The contrast between the Panther cupola and Soviet hull is stark and very eye-catching

The oil paint ‘dot’ (or here, streak) technique is seen here, mid-way
through application

WEATHERING
The first step was to apply oil paints to create some
faded colours and for this I used materials from
Abteilung 502 (ABT303 Mapping Technique Lights
and Shadows Set) plus some artist oils. I blended these
oils at the same time as the light colours and shadows,
along with 'Old Rust' and 'Damp Earth' shades. I also
added some streaks with paint from AMMO by Mig's
enamel colours set. Later, I airbrushed a layer of Mr
Color Semi-Gloss Clear to prepare for the pigment/ Here we see the vehicle with its dunkelgelb overspray in place, plus advanced weathering
dust process. I applied different coloured pigments in
random areas; AMMO by Mig 'Factory Grey', Europe
Earth, Vallejo Pigment Light Sienna (73104), Vallejo
Dark Yellow Ochre (73103) and a familiar shade
known as Black Earth.
I fixed all pigments with Winsor and Newton
solvents and made some splashes on the lower hull and
running gear to form a muddy weathering effect. To
do this, I applied Vallejo Russian Thick Mud (73.808)
which, as a water-based acrylic is easy use and control
and much better to create an accumulation of dry and
fresh mud effects. I made different mud tones and also
mixed some pigments with the thick 'mud'.
All throughout this step I used a toothpick for
blending the various zones of colour and texture. For
the final touches, I applied AMMO by Mig 'Wet and
Damp Earth' with a paintbrush.
In order to make some realistic fluid leaks on the
ISU's engine deck – such as fresh engine oil, older oil
leaks around the exhaust and on the road wheel hubs –
I also used the 'Wet Effect', which keeps things looking
moist. The last step was to brush-paint the newly
painted German marking and tank number, using
Vallejo Red and Black acrylics. It's an unusual-looking
machine and a different take on the more commonly The newly-applied German vehicle numbers were carefully touched-in by hand
seen Soviet vehicles in German service. •

T-34-76 JÁNOŠÍK:
THE ROBIN HOOD TANK
Marian Bunc recreates the T-34-76 made
by factory No.112 Krasnoe Sormovo, and
named after the legendary 18th Century
highwayman ‘Juraj Jánošík’

52 Military Illustrated Modeller - February 2018

p 52-59 T34 082MN 52 21/12/2017 12:00

J
uraj Jánošík (died March 1713) was a famous
Slovak highwayman and was the main
character in many Slovak and Polish novels,
poems and films. According to the legend, he
robbed noblemen and gave the loot to the poor,
a deed often attributed to the famous Robin Hood.
The image of Jánošík as a symbol of resistance to
oppression was reinforced when poems about him
became part of the Slovak and Czech middle and
high school literature curriculum, and then again
with the numerous films that propagated his modern
legend in the 20th century. During the anti-Nazi
Slovak National Uprising, one of the partisan
groups bore his name.
To recreate the T-34/76 named 'Jánošík', I used
ICM’s kit No.35366, which represents a vehicle
built in factory No.183 Nizhny Tagil. Specifically,
I needed a version from factory No.112 Krasnoe
Sormovo, so I had to make some important
modifications. The main change was to make
over the rear part of the hull, more precisely, the
rear armoured plate and two big hinges. Another
mod was to redo the joints of the welded-on
front and the side armoured plate, which was a
characteristic for vehicles from factory No.112. The
last modification to achieve the desired version was
to add steel strips to the upper edge of the hull as a
projectile protection and installation of the specific
factory No.112 handles.
Right from the start of the construction it became
clear that it would be important to repair some
blunders from the manufacturer too. So I decided
to replace the original turret with a resin one,
because the one from the kit was too big and
angular shaped. The kit also contains a too small
MG mount and thus had to be replaced with one
from Dragon's kit. The transmission cover was also
too angular in shape, so again it also had to be
altered. I had to fill the gap around the engine
access cover, and it should also have rounded
corners not sharp as in the kit. One of the greatest
problems, visible after chassis completion, is the
position of the suspension arms. They are too low,
so the tank looks like it has been jacked up, so I
had to cut the arms off and glue them into the right
position about 3mm higher.
If you aware of this problem before cementing
the arms in place, you can solve it by cutting off
the location pins that fit into the chassis suspension
springs. With this done, the arm will be able
to rotate around its axis so there won’t be any
problem in gluing it in the right position. This
kit also needs replacement roadwheels. I used
MiniArt’s set 35236. The set also contains idler
wheels which were also used, because the original
from the kit are about 2.0mm too big in diameter.
There were nearly no PE parts used on this
model, only the engine grill mesh, rear fenders,
the saw and a shovel. The front fenders and the
auxiliary fuel tanks with holders were made from
metal sheet cut from a soft drinks can. It wasn’t
possible to use the original auxiliary fuel tanks,
because their dimensions and proportions were
absolutely incorrect for a 1:35 model.

PAINTING AND WEATHERING

I started the painting pretty unusually by the white
cote of Tamiya acrylics on the sides of the turret
in the areas where the lettering would be placed.
Then I applied masks over the white coat and
sprayed on a green camouflage colour. I used a
mixture of Mr Paint Olive Green MRP35, lightened
a bit by Dark Yellow MRP 37. I started with colour-
wash mixed from black and brown oil colours. I let
it dry and then proceeded with shading of every
single panel using oil colours. I used black and The turret grab-handles

for highlights. Then it was time to apply some paint a coaxial cable
chips. I started by pre-painting each chip with light
green tone by Vallejo and then I painted the centre
of each spot with dark grey acrylic Vallejo colour.
I applied Wilder's 'Old rust effect' NL05 into the
centres of the chips and let it dry a bit. Then I
blended it smoothly with white spirit.
The first coat of dust was mostly applied
to the lower parts of the hull where it had to
represent a base coat for mud, especially behind
the suspension. For this step I used a mixture of
weathering products; Wilder's 'Dark Street Effect'
NL23 and Sirahobby dust pigment E18 Sandy
Brown. Then I applied to the dusted areas a
thinned black-brown oil colour, that represents dark
wet areas.
The first step of weathering of the upper parts of

The greatest problem of this build wasn’t the
conversion to the factory No.112 machine, but
correcting the mistakes of the ICM kit itself. That’s
the reason why it is probably better idea to use
another kit of superior quality. The best example
is Dragon’s kit No.6584 or 6614, which really
represent the version from the factory No.112
Krasnoe Sormovo. Unfortunately however, these
kits come with turrets with rounded lower edges.
Another one possible alternative could be the
AFV Club kit No.AF35143, but you would have
to replace its turret with a hexagonal item with a
commander's cupola and a sharp lower edge. In
the price/quality ratio, the best option is the kit
from Academy No.13505 but you have to make
over it to the final look of the factory No.112! •

Pre-painting the ‘Jánošík’ slogan on The pioneer tools’ wooden handles stand out subtly from the weathered hull. Note the simulated grass fibres on the track guards
the turret side in white is easier than
applying it afterwards

The mud build-up on the tracks and
running gear is heavy, but not so
much that it obscure the detail on
the roadwheels

Varied tones of green help to lift the

detail on the turret structures

BOOK REVIEWS
REAL COLORS OF WWII
JURGEN KIROFF, PRZEMYSLAW SKULSKI, MIKE STARMER, STEVEN ZALOGA
AK INTERACTIVE • https://ak-interactive.com/

We have all seen colour images from the Second World War in older books, in TV documentaries
and online, but this new title from AK Interactive cleverly reproduces many in high-quality colour on
glossy art paper to allow this ‘visual gold’ to look its best. It’s not just wartime Agfa and Kodachrome
here though, the book is also stuffed with new photos of genuine WW2 equipment (mostly German,
plus some Soviet items), colour illustrations and black and white images to show how various shades
convert into monochrome. A fascinating study and well worth adding to one’s bookshelf.

FORGOTTEN ARCHIVES 2,
THE LOST SIGNAL CORPS PHOTOS
DARREN NEELY, PANZERWRECKS
www.panzerwrecks.com

The second volume in the ‘Forgotten Archives’ series focuses on

photographs taken by the US Army Signal Corps, a unit that was responsible for
some of the war’s most iconic images, as well as literally hundreds of thousands
of lesser known but no less fascinating photos. This 240+ page, hard-backed,
landscape format production goes some way to addressing this, bringing us some
priceless imagery, not just of US military operations but also abandoned Axis
machinery. The photographs are mostly reproduced as full-pages, which allows
the detail to really be seen, which will please modellers. Types seen in this book
include the Sherman tank, of course, but also M36 Jackson, armoured Jeep, M18
Hellcat, M7 Priest, M20 Greyhound armoured car, M5A1 light tank and many
more American vehicles and their crews/GIs. The German armour shown includes
the Panther, Tiger I, Sd.Kfz.7 halftrack; even the Brits get a page in the form of a
Churchill bridge-tank! Fantastic stuff and can be bought in confidence.

NEW in the ‘HOW TO BUILD...’ series
How to Build...
TAMIYA 1:32 F4U-1A
and F4U-1D CORSAIR
When Tamiya released their 1:32 scale Spitfire
Mk.IXc in 2009, they set a new standard for plastic
model kits. Each model since then has seen
incremental improvements. Just when you think the
series can’t get any better, Tamiya goes and proves
you wrong.
Their 1:32 scale Birdcage Corsair was released
in mid-2013. This was an outstanding kit in every
respect.
Tamiya expanded their 1:32 scale Corsair family
with an F4U-1A in late 2014. This kit included
several new sprues and offered a wider range of
camouflage and marking possibilities.
Tamiya has now completed the -1 trio with their
new 1:32 scale F4U-1D Corsair. Once again, this kit
includes a significant number of brand new sprues
to depict the unique attributes of this variant.
We can also marvel at the kit’s subtle surface
textures, high level of detail, clever parts breakdown
and accuracy.
In this new book, we provide an exhaustive step-
by-step illustrated guide to building and detailing
the 1:32 scale F4U-1D and F4U-1A, offering plenty Only
of inspiration with two different configurations and £14.95
plus p&p
colour schemes.
We have also a bonus Chapter on building Tamiya’s
1:48 scale Corsair family, offer some tips for
painting pilot figures and include a helpful walk
around of a Corsair under restoration.

MODELLING INSPIRATION...

HIDING FROM ATTACK

Possibly the best camouflaged M10 TD
in Normandy makes a move

H
ere we can (just) see an M10 tank destroyer from the 703rd TD Bn. of the Third
Armored Division at the crossroads of La Bruyere, about 3km north-northwest of
Rennes, on the Fromentel road, Normandy. The photo was probably taken between
16th and 18th August 1944, the date of the fighting on this road.
In the background we can observe a burnt-out M4 Sherman; we can tell it has caught
fire by the soot on the turret front from the inferno that would have blown upwards from the
open hatch, plus the tracks whose rubber pads have been incinerated.
To the left is a wreck of a German halftrack Sd.Kfz 7 vehicle that had been towing a
Flak 18 gun. On the left in the ditch is the corpse of a German soldier, possibly its driver.
The US TD crew have camouflaged their tank to perfection, to conceal themselves not
from the Luftwaffe at this point of the Normandy campaign, but from German anti-tank units
who hid in hedgerows and could strike armour without warning.
This would make an interesting diorama and a test of one’s ability to apply foliage
camouflage to a model in miniature. •

See you again next time!
