akom became the first manufacturer to release
the Russian ZSU-57-2 in injection plastic in 2016,
followed soon after by another example from
Trumpeter. Until then, the only kit available was the
very complex multimedia offering by Jadar/Armo, which
was featured back in Issue 131 (September 2006) of
MiM's sister title, Tamiya Model Magazine. Although
Takom’s kit assembles quickly and easily, it was left in sub-
assemblies to aid in painting (as was the Jadar/Armo kit
for the same reason).
Adding the beautiful set of turned brass gun barrels
from Magic Models was the only deviation from building
the Takom kit straight from the box. Ammo by Mig

this kit, including examples serving with the Soviet Army,
German NVA, Finnish Army, Serbian Army, Syrian Army,
Egyptian Army, Kurdish Peshmerga, and two different
options each for the North Vietnam Army & Iranian
Army. Having made an Iranian Army subject previously,
this time I opted for a weapon serving with the North
Vietnam Army during the Vietnam War. The model was

sections bolted together. This bolted joint design, though
adopted to be an significant design improvement, was
also a fatal weakness. When hit by anti-tank fire, the
hull would be split open.
The camo schemes of French's Somua commonly
seen were the multi-colour horizontal band patterns. The
scheme of this tank, however, belonged to the First Light
Cavalry Division with its three colour bands in vertical
direction separated by thin black accents. Its pattern
was Somua's factory painting scheme and was used
prior to the lateral direction pattern period.

one can get close, but if the greens are

THE DIORAMA
For the groundwork I used a mixture of topsoil, coffee grounds
and dark earth pigment mixed together with clear Elmers Glue
and water. Once the model had been pushed into its environment
I used some dry topsoil and pigment (with the base still wet) to
create some texture to the ground and also at this point I added
some moss and roots, blending them into the ground further giving
it life. Last I used some ash from the fire pit outside and Pledge
Floorcare varnish to secure everything in place. Job done, a

NEW ARMOUR
ON THE WAY FROM TAMIYA
AFV Edition 37
BEUTE
IN BERLIN!
Kreangkrai Paojinda takes Dragon's
ageing ISU-152 kit and depicts it
as a 'what if' machine in German
service during the Battle of Berlin
T
he ISU-152 was a Soviet self-propelled gun
developed and used during World War II. It
was used as mobile artillery to support the
more mobile infantry and armour attacks
in the late war years; many ISU-152 were used
during the Battle of Berlin in 1945. So, here's the
concept for this project. What if, before the war
had finished, the Germans counter attacked the
liberating Soviet forces and many ISU-152s were
wrecked or left behind? The Germans might have
captured one and field-modified it, returning it to
combat and fighting back.
ASSEMBLY
The ISU-152 from Dragon (6803) is an older kit
from 1994 and I built it around ten years ago.
I chose to use it again for this idea, but with
plenty of modifications. On the upper hull I used
a modelling knife to remove all of the fenders
and mudguards. I re-built the engine grilles using
0.3mm Tamiya plastic sheet and on the rear plate
I added two German 200L fuel drums. On the hull
top, I replaced the commander's cupola with one
from a Panther Ausf.G and also remade all the
welding seams using epoxy putty, which makes
the model that much more realistic. Following the
'what if' concept, I added wire-mesh schürzen
stand-off armour. I used a photo-etched set from
ET Model (E35091) for a Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.J (Late
Version) which is very well detailed and easy to
build. The brackets for the schürzen were
a DIY job and I also fitted some
solid armour plates makes to
suggest that this field-modified ISU
was given any armoured protection
that the maintenance teams could find. The final
step of the build sequence was to create a textured
armour surface. I applied Tamiya putty mixed with
some black colour plus Mr.Color thinner to create
the cast steel finish on the steel plate and mantlet. The grey of the Dragon kit is
in evidence here; note the dark
grey of the enhanced weld seams
The rear fuel drums were given straps made from metal strip
AFV Edition 39
PAINTING
I began the painting the kit by applying a primer
base-coat using Mr.Surfacer 1000 spray and once
it dried, I then airbrushed Mr.Color mixes to create
the shades for the dark rust, light rust and steel
colour undercoat. I used the 'hairspray technique',
applying the fluid with an airbrush which is better
for controlled application in small scales. When
it was dry I painted the model Russian green,
mixed from AMMO by Mig Olivgrün (A.MIG-002,
RAL6003), Vallejo Camouflage Light Green (006)
and Vallejo White. I also created a highlight colour
with the latter material. The vehicle number '339'
was hand-painted using Vallejo flat white. A rust-coloured base coat
I then began the painting of the German parts; was applied first, using
the Panther Cupola, wire mesh schürzen and Mr Color paints
the 200L fuel drums. I applied AMMO by Mig
Dunkelgelb (A.MIG-011, RAL7028) for a base
tone and then I airbrushed the camouflage using
a mixture of Vallejo Model Air Tank Brown (041)
and Hull Red to create the rotbraun colour and
Vallejo Model Air Camouflage Light Green (006)
for the Olivgrün portion of the scheme. Once it
was all dry, I applied 'Chipping Worn Effects'
fluid and applied the wide bands of dunkelgelb
across the vehicle's hull. Tamiya X-20A thinners
and water (mixed 70/30) was used
with a paintbrush and toothpick
to create realistic scratches and
paint scoring. Next up were the
weld lines, and to paint these I used
Gunze Silver (N8), hand painted with a brush.
For the final step in the painting process I sprayed
Gunze Semi-Gloss clear over the whole model, in
readiness for the weathering.
The oil paint ‘dot’ (or here, streak) technique is seen here, mid-way
through application
WEATHERING
The first step was to apply oil paints to create some
faded colours and for this I used materials from
Abteilung 502 (ABT303 Mapping Technique Lights
and Shadows Set) plus some artist oils. I blended these
oils at the same time as the light colours and shadows,
along with 'Old Rust' and 'Damp Earth' shades. I also
added some streaks with paint from AMMO by Mig's
enamel colours set. Later, I airbrushed a layer of Mr
Color Semi-Gloss Clear to prepare for the pigment/ Here we see the vehicle with its dunkelgelb overspray in place, plus advanced weathering
dust process. I applied different coloured pigments in
random areas; AMMO by Mig 'Factory Grey', Europe
Earth, Vallejo Pigment Light Sienna (73104), Vallejo
Dark Yellow Ochre (73103) and a familiar shade
known as Black Earth.
I fixed all pigments with Winsor and Newton
solvents and made some splashes on the lower hull and
running gear to form a muddy weathering effect. To
do this, I applied Vallejo Russian Thick Mud (73.808)
which, as a water-based acrylic is easy use and control
and much better to create an accumulation of dry and
fresh mud effects. I made different mud tones and also
mixed some pigments with the thick 'mud'.
All throughout this step I used a toothpick for
blending the various zones of colour and texture. For
the final touches, I applied AMMO by Mig 'Wet and
Damp Earth' with a paintbrush.
In order to make some realistic fluid leaks on the
ISU's engine deck – such as fresh engine oil, older oil
leaks around the exhaust and on the road wheel hubs –
I also used the 'Wet Effect', which keeps things looking
moist. The last step was to brush-paint the newly
painted German marking and tank number, using
Vallejo Red and Black acrylics. It's an unusual-looking
machine and a different take on the more commonly The newly-applied German vehicle numbers were carefully touched-in by hand
seen Soviet vehicles in German service. •

CONCLUSION
The greatest problem of this build wasn’t the
conversion to the factory No.112 machine, but
correcting the mistakes of the ICM kit itself. That’s
the reason why it is probably better idea to use
another kit of superior quality. The best example
is Dragon’s kit No.6584 or 6614, which really
represent the version from the factory No.112
Krasnoe Sormovo. Unfortunately however, these
kits come with turrets with rounded lower edges.
Another one possible alternative could be the
AFV Club kit No.AF35143, but you would have
to replace its turret with a hexagonal item with a
commander's cupola and a sharp lower edge. In
the price/quality ratio, the best option is the kit
from Academy No.13505 but you have to make
over it to the final look of the factory No.112! •

We have all seen colour images from the Second World War in older books, in TV documentaries
and online, but this new title from AK Interactive cleverly reproduces many in high-quality colour on
glossy art paper to allow this ‘visual gold’ to look its best. It’s not just wartime Agfa and Kodachrome
here though, the book is also stuffed with new photos of genuine WW2 equipment (mostly German,
plus some Soviet items), colour illustrations and black and white images to show how various shades
convert into monochrome. A fascinating study and well worth adding to one’s bookshelf.

ere we can (just) see an M10 tank destroyer from the 703rd TD Bn. of the Third
Armored Division at the crossroads of La Bruyere, about 3km north-northwest of
Rennes, on the Fromentel road, Normandy. The photo was probably taken between
16th and 18th August 1944, the date of the fighting on this road.
In the background we can observe a burnt-out M4 Sherman; we can tell it has caught
fire by the soot on the turret front from the inferno that would have blown upwards from the
open hatch, plus the tracks whose rubber pads have been incinerated.
To the left is a wreck of a German halftrack Sd.Kfz 7 vehicle that had been towing a
Flak 18 gun. On the left in the ditch is the corpse of a German soldier, possibly its driver.
The US TD crew have camouflaged their tank to perfection, to conceal themselves not
from the Luftwaffe at this point of the Normandy campaign, but from German anti-tank units
who hid in hedgerows and could strike armour without warning.
This would make an interesting diorama and a test of one’s ability to apply foliage
camouflage to a model in miniature. •
