his month’s Armour in Profile
feature on Hungarian national
markings in World War II and
our article on IBG Models’ Toldi
made me think about how
technology has transformed our
hobby in two ways in recent years.
The first, and most obvious, of
course, is the Internet and the way in which it has
made information so readily available. There
is a plethora of images and information on
almost every topic a modeller could want
and, as a professional historian myself, I can
testify that a Google search is the first stage in
any researcher’s new project. What is more
difficult is to sure of the veracity of information
you find on the Web and there is no substitute
still for the kind of detailed archival and library
research that underpins Andrew Telford’s article
this month. The second is the use of CAD and 3-
D printing in making moulds for kits. This has
enabled the explosion of
new kits as tooling a
model from scratch now
takes months, if not
weeks, instead of
paintstakingly making a
master by hand.
Andrew Telford’s Armour
in Profile feature this
month, complemented by
Mark Rolfe’s superb colour
profiles of the Toldi, makes
for interesting reading, as
does Ivan Momcilovic Momcha’s build of IBG
Models’ kit. Next up Christian Lupu completes
his Trumpeter SCUD-B project. We also welcome
back John Hale who builds Asuka Models’ new
Sherman M4 Late. This is based on a particular
tank and John, a renowned Sherman expert, gave
assistance to Asuka Models in the development of
this kit. It’s also a welcome return for Łukasz Orczyc-
Musiałek who brings us bang up to date with a very
topical build of Trumpeter’s T-72B1. Finally, we round
up the news of the latest releases from the Shizuoka
show in Japan, while Abilio Piñeiro Grajera reports
from the AMT show in Spain. Until next month, happy
modelling.

he SU-76 saw action from the
summer of 1943 right through to the
end of the War with the Red Army
and continued to serve in allied armies for
another decade or so. In all some 13,700
were built. Given its status as one of the
most numerous of all AFVs modellers have
been ill served by kits of the SU-76M in
plastic. Alan Hobbies’ kit of the 1990s
(reboxed by Dragon and Maquette) is
probably best forgotten, while MiniArt’s
2008 release (ref. 35036) was a complex
build and had a few inaccuracies as it was
based on their T-70 kits. Tamiya’s new kit,
Russian Self-Propelled Gun SU-76M (ref.
35348), is a very welcome release,
produced with typical Tamiya skill and
accuracy and very easy to build. The box
contains 395 olive green plastic parts, 23
grey ones, a clear sprue, poly caps (to fit
the gun in place) and some string for the
tow cable. The kit represents the so-called
Model 1, without the DT machine gun.
Unlike most Tamiya kits, the lower hull is a
‘flat pack’ of six parts, while the walls to
the fighting compartment similarly
comprise separate panels. Given Tamiya’s
skill in engineering, this proves no
problem in assembly. The suspension is a
breeze to assemble with a little pin to
ensure that the suspension arms sit
correctly, while the tracks (a combination
of a single run for the bottom and
individual links) include a jig to ensure the
characteristic sag on the top run. The gun
is nicely detailed and much easier to
assemble than MiniArt’s version. The poly
caps help it to traverse and elevate. The kit
comes with three figures, surprisingly well
sculpted for Tamiya and the commander is
a dead ringer for none other than Vladimir
Putin! Decals are provided for two
vehicles: 11th Guards Self-Propelled
Artillery Battalion, East Prussia 1944
(chassis number 410144, white A-514,
piece number 2); Unknown self-propelled
artillery battalion, Karlshorst District, Berlin
1945 (white 27 or white 30). The limited
choice of markings and colour schemes
(4BO Green of course) is perhaps the only
quibble about what is a cracking kit. Our

To muddy the waters a little more, there

referred to as the ‘narrow war marking’ in
Hungarian texts due to the actual width of
the green sections of the cross (image 15).
I have found no documentation to date
why this occurred in these two units, both
units retained the emblem in the narrow
proportions until the 1942 cross was
introduced.
The Honvéd Légierő (Hungarian Air
Force) noted that after the declaration of
war with the Soviet Union in 1941; the
visibility of the three coloured chevron in
use on their aircraft was extremely poor
17
and many times German pilots had
mistakenly engaged Hungarian aircraft.
The Germans at this time were pressing for
the use of a standard unified insignia for
the entire Axis powers. The General Staff of
the Honvéd Légierő in response to this
proposed a white cross bordered in black
within a green square framed in red,
however experiments showed that in this
form the colours were difficult to
recognise, at the same time the Honvéd
Légierő staff proposed a simple insignia of
a white cross within a black square, which
was similar to the insignia in use on
German aircraft, and contained the same
colours albeit reversed. This was accepted
on March 12 with Decree No.
142.415/1942.
It had also been reported to the Védelmi
Minisztérium Főparancsnoksága – Chief of
Staff at the Ministry of Defence – that the
current three colour insignia in use on the
Magyar Királyi Honvédség vehicles was
also difficult to visualise by the pilots of the
