Course Description

This course will expose the students to the peculiarities of project management, and
impart to them an appreciation of the complexities involved in managing the affairs of a project.
It helps differentiate between ongoing operations and projects. It also introduces CPM and
PERT as the two major techniques and Microsoft Project as a tool for Project Management.
Major topics include project planning, integration, project staffing, scope and time management,
risk management and quality management. The course aims at producing project managers
equipped with necessary tools, techniques and skills for effective and efficient handling of
projects of all sizes.

4 Project life cycle. Types of projects, Project planning, Project management and related
industries.
5 Feasibility study? Considerations in feasibility study. Contents and format and
presentation of feasibility study.
6 Project selection criteria and considerations. Non-numeric model, and scoring
model.
7 Project selection criteria and considerations: Numeric model; Payback period,
Return on investment (ROI), Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of
Return (IRR). Ration Analysis
8 Project budgeting;: Evaluation of constraints;. Project constraints, corporate
internal, and corporate external constraints.
9 Evaluations of alternatives and options. Information gathering. Cost and benefits
analysis. Breakeven Analysis.
10 Project Estimating and costing; types; Fixed cost, variable cost, direct/indirect,
and other costs.
11 Determining methodology / techniques. Jobbing, factoring, inflation. Unit rate
and estimating format.
12 Planning and control techniques. Steps, and project control cycle. Risk
assessment, Risk management approach.
13 Work breakdown structure; Organization Breakdown structure, Cost Breakdown
