CHAPTER I

The Problem and Its Background

INTRODUCTION

An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the earth, resulting from the sudden release of

energy in the earth’s lithosphere that creates seismic waves. They can be extremely violent or

cannot be felt by anyone.

Earthquakes are usually quite brief, but may repeat anytime. There are small and large

earthquakes. We can describe or define large earthquake as the most destructive and violent that it

can take down more and more building and cause so many injuries as well as death.

For us to be more prepared and ready for this kind of disaster, we should use practice an

earthquake drill in order for us to know what we gonna do if it happens in reality. Earthquake drill

must thoroughly in still in minds of all of us the correct and proper procedures to be followed so

that in an emergency there will be no confusion and panic.

Most of the time earthquake are often caused by the slippage along a fault in the earth’s crust

(Frederick and Edward ,2007). When the fault ruptures in the earth’s crust, the seismic waves

travel away from the since known as rocks, in all direction to the ground surface.

The first major earthquake occurred on April 4 at 8:58 pm (PS7) with a surface wave

magnitude OF 5.5 on the coast of Batangas. According to the PHILVOCS earthquake intensity

scale the earthquake had an intensity of VI (very strong). On April 8 more strong earthquakes

occurred in the province. PHILVOCS recorded the strongest earthquake as having a surface wave
magnitude of 6.0 with occurred in the afternoon. Another one struck on august 11, with a surface

wave magnitude of 6.3

The 2017,Batangas earthquake was an earthquake swarm. Which occurred from early to mid,

august 2017, affecting the Philippine province of Batangas and other nearby areas. Basilica of the

immaculate conception in Batangas City after the earthquake.

Teachers and student in school as well as government employees in government agency often

include building evacuation as a part of their earthquake drill. Once they are heard the alarm, they

automatically going to the nearest and safest place to hide. Nor under any armchair or table inside

the building but in an open area where it is free from falling debris.

The focus of this study is to identify and distinguish the advantages of making an earthquake

drill practices and ways and procedures and including so. This also aims to initialize if there would

be lesser injuries and destruction in undergoing and preparing in earthquake.

Significance of the study

The aim of this study is to help the researcher solve and distinguish the levels of readiness and

prepearedness of the employees in thier work immersion about earthquake. This study will be of

great benefit of the following.

Students. They are the one who will be of great beneficiary of learning and studying this readings.

They are away to their parents they just their selves to do the right steps and procedures if an

earthquake disaster occurs.

Teachers. They are the one who took good care of their students. They are their second parents in

school. They are also the one who will teach their students what’s right to do in case of an

earthquake occurs.

Parents. Studying an earthquake drill may also help the parents to lessen their worries if ever

there will be an earthquake and they are away from their children, because they know that their

children are with their teacher.

Statement of the problem

Most of the time earthquakes are often caused by the slippage along a fault in the earth's crust

( Frederick and Edward, 2007). When the fault ruptures in the earth crust, the seismic waves will

travel away from the some known as rocks, in all direction to the ground surface.

The study aims to indentify and answer the following guidelines:

The study aims to identify and answer the following guidelines:

1. What is the Profile of BNHS-SHS in terms of :

1.1 First Aid Kit

1.1.1 Bandage

1.1.2. Gauze

1.1.3. Non prescribed medicines

1.2 Supplies Kits

1.2.1 Gas Mask

1.2.2 Stretchers

1.2.3 Water Supply

1.2.4 Food Supply

1.3 Evacuation Area / Meeting Place

Scope and Limitation

This investigation was conducted to determine the readiness and preparedness of the

employees before and during an earthquake. The aspects were looked into the places where will

they conduct their immersion the facilities and materials needed and the agencies who are

reponsible to this matter.

The general problem of this study to determine the readiness and preparedness of employee

before and during an earthquake. The population or the universe in this study are the 5 teachers

,25 employee ( immersion students) as well as the nurses in the clinic locale or the place where it

will be conducted is in the school where they studies their immersion. Its also conducted by school

year 2017-2018

Definition of Terms

Earthquake- Shaking or slipping movement of the earth’s crust, followed by seismic waves and

vibration.

BFP-Is in charge of the administration and management of municipal and city fire and emergency

services all over the country.

Earthquake drill-An earthquake drill is a drill used to practice in preparation for an earthquake.

School in some areas conduct earthquakes drills.

Debris- stop, drop, and hold is use during the drill. Fragments or remnant of something destroyed

or broken.

Facilities – Something that permits the easier performance of an action course of conduct to

provide someone with every facility for accomplishing a task.

Perspectives -Compare aerial perspectives , linear perspectives . a picture employing this

technique ,especially one in which it is prominent.
