PREFACE
This standard was prepared by the Association's Committee on Septic Tanks,
as a revision of AS CAI3-1968, which it accordingly supersedes.
NOTE TO 1978 REPRINT: This standard was originally published in the one document
with AS 1546-1973, Small Septic Tanks. The latter standard was subsequently revised
(1976) and published separately.
The preparation of AS 1546 and AS 1547 was undertaken with the object
of establishing requirements which would make for, on the one hand,
simplicity, economy of design and Jatisfactory performance of septic tanks
and, on the other hand, for effective disposal of effluent from the tanks.
This Tevision endorses the original objectives and involves changes in
minor editorial aspects, introduces metric dimensions, and expresses values
in SI units as part of the metric conversion programme.

disposal should be adopted, it would .beunwise- to publish hard and fast

rules for effluent disposal. Accordingly the standards comprise a specification
of requirements for small septic tanks (AS 1546) and a code of recommended
practice for the disposal of effluent from the tanks (AS 1547).
The standards do not apply to larger septic tanks requiring the provision
of facilities for the biological treatment of the effluent therefrom.
This standard may require reference to AS 1546.
