NATIONAL AIDS SUNDAY

PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD!

A s we progress in our spiritual pilgrimage toward the shrine of Jesus’

Crib, on this Second Sunday of Advent, St. John the BapƟst reminds
us that we need to prepare ourselves adequately for our encounter
with the Lord. We must prove the seriousness of our resolve to change for
the beƩer, each of us in our own situaƟon.
St. Paul gives us some pracƟcal Ɵps as to what this preparaƟon can
mean, as he invites us to live in perfect harmony with one another, accept-
ing one another as Christ has accepted us. Only on these condiƟons shall
we be able to glorify God with one voice and one heart as loving children
should, parƟcularly in this Advent season.
Today is also NaƟonal AIDS Sunday. The Church has been at the front-
lines of the baƩle against AIDS, helping and supported by many NGOs. But
we must all do our share to stop the alarming rise in HIV/AIDS cases that
threatens the very foundaƟon of our society: the family. As we try to learn
more about this deadly disease and reach out to those who are at risk, let
us also remember in this Eucharist the persons living with HIV/AIDS and
the ones who are caring for them.

GLOSSARY: • Jesse: The father of King David and, therefore, a forefather of the Messiah, who in this reading is called “a
shoot that shall sprout from the stump of Jesse.” • Pharisees: Members of a religious sect in Israel. They were character-
ized by a very strict interpretation and observance of all the precepts contained in the section of the Bible called “The Law.”
• Sadducees: A religious party or sect existing in Palestine in the time of Jesus. Many members of this party belonged to the
priestly aristocracy and its supporters. They accepted as inspired by God only the Torah (what we call the Pentateuch) and
rejected tradition. They believed neither in the resurrection from death nor in the existence of angels. This put them at odds
with the Pharisees and also with Jesus.
