I will touch on the basics of the most common questions in
one variable statistics.
Mean/Mode/Median
Mean- Arithmetic average of a list of numbers. It is found by dividing the sum of the numbers by the number of numbers.
(Can be found using the STAT button in the calculator)
Mode- The number which appears the most often in a list of numbers.
Median- The number in the middle when a list is arranged in size order. (Can be found using the STAT button in the calculator)
Using "STAT" on The Calculator to find Mean, Median, Lower Quartile, Upper Quartile and Standard Deviation
To find the mean, median, quartiles and standard deviation, follow the steps below.
The important information in the calculator is shown below.
*Mean-
*Standard Deviation-
*Lower Quartile-
*Median-
*Upper Quartile-
Using "STAT" on the Calculator to find information when frequencies are NOT 1
Instead of giving a list of numbers, some questions give values in a table and tell you how many times the value shows up by giving you its frequency.
If frequencies of the values are not equal to 1, you need to press a few extra buttons. Cumulative Frequency Tables and Graphs
The cumulative frequency of a certain value is the sum of all the sum of the frequency of that value and the frequencies before.
A cumulative frequency graph is made by plotting x values (ex. age) vs the cumulative frequencies on the y axis.
You are expected to be able to find the Median, Upper Quartile, Lower Quartile and other percentile values from the graph.
Percentages/Percentiles
You may also be asked to work with percentages in cumulative frequency graph questions.
Box and Whisker Plots
This is a visual representation of 5 key points.
Stem and Leaf Diagrams
A list of numbers can be presented as a stem and leaf diagram.
Histograms
A histogram is a bar graph for continuos data.
Note: Everything in these notes can be combined in several different ways on the test. It is extremely important that you practice IB problems in addition to reviewing these notes.
