Rationale: Students will engage in changing quantities to 10 as foundational means for the concept of
addition. To visualize change in quantity by adding 1, students will use concrete materials, pictorial forms
and student participants, and will as such be engaged in multiple ways of knowing. The concept of
addition will further be exemplified through real-life examples as means to make the learning more
meaningful.
Essential Question(s): What happens to a number when we add 1 to it? Does the number get bigger or
smaller/are there now more or less?
