Electrical Engineering Personal Statement for Admission

I am always fascinated by how robots and all kind of machines such as vehicles work and jut

how they were designed for their purposes. From the time I was a young, sciences, especially

physics, is an area that my heart craves for all the time. When I was in primary school, I would

imagine connecting wires and being a global engineer. As I grew up, the imaginations started

fading away as I always aimed at actualizing the imaginations. I have constantly demanded to

gain more knowledge about how machines and electrical gadgets function beyond the outer

appearance and performance of machines or any gadget in that matter.

The world of electrical engineering especially discrete signals has become the centre of my

world. It is through electrical engineering that the globe has been transformed to a completely

different world from how it was 200 years ago. I believe discrete signal has played a major role

in this and I want to be a part of the revolution; the designer of the revolution. This will be the

foundation of the design and implementation of systems that involves the transmission,

manipulation and storage of information. I believe the invention of a course like Electrical

engineering was the best thing to ever happen in this world. This is because it combined all my

subject interests and gave people like me a chance of being part of the advancing technological

world and to do what they are most passionate about. Majoring in discrete signals will offer me

an opportunity to further venture into the interesting world of physics and mathematics and

provide me with vast knowledge that will equip me the necessary skills to venture into the

competitive world market and be part of the change that the world needs.

Through my undergraduate studies which focused on subjects like digital circuits,

fundamentals of computer architecture, probability, discrete signals, communication systems and

control systems among others, I managed to gain practical experience in a local firm. I can

comfortably work with various software including Microsoft visual studio, Eclipse, and linux

mac. I can also program in Java and C++. I love programming actual hardware or robots to

perform tasks. For example, I would use an RC car with a robotic hand attached to it in lifting up

stuff from the floor and such. Mechatronic and robotics are also areas that interest me as they are

about programming robots to accomplish some desired tasks and this can be used for both

academic and recreational purposes. Others subjects in electrical engineering that interest me

include digital systems, control systems and computer architecture. However, digital signals

remain my passion. I understand that there is no better place to do my graduate studies and

further enhance my knowledge and skills than Dayton University. I have done my undergraduate

studies here and I know the passion and will that the lecturers have in training their students. The

lecturers are dedicated and would stop at nothing to make sure that their students are well

equipped with the knowledge and skills they require in the different fields. This is achieved

mostly through massive dedicated practical lessons that give the students an opportunity to

perform practical tasks for their better grasping and understanding of concepts. The culture at

Dayton University is also appealing to me; both the staff and the student community are friendly

and accommodative of each other. Whenever anyone steps into the school, they feel at home.

After being here for all my undergraduate years, there is no better place to be than Dayton

University.

Throughout my course and practical experiences, I have been able to work on various

successful projects that are fundamental to my graduate program. First, Create mobile app for

the IOS system which is deal with QR code. Second, Design an electric bike which deals with

designing the battery pack for the bike, and the battery mangment system. The project employs

Multisim to design circuit and analyze is using guided numbers. The third project is binary to

decimal and hexadecimal convertor which I did using programming DE2-

115. The fourth project done is the traffic light simulation IC circuit which aimed at

understanding how the traffic lights work using a simplified circuit using the 555 timer design.

The last project is face recognition. This project involved human face recognition using

Euclidean distance analysis. The centre of the approach in this project was the creation of a user

defined function that computed the similarity between images. In this project, I was able to

analyze the performance of the approach as a function of noise. The last project that I worked so

much on is the senior (Capstone) design which aimed at modifying propone generators so that it

is more environmental friendly. This project inspired me as it was designed for a course. The

river-mobile is significant in helping students living in the Miami River area to protect the river

watershed as well as the species in the area. This helps in reducing pollution, protecting wildlife

and rivers globally.

These projects have inspired me in a massive way. Through working on them I realized that

the market demands for more knowledge and skills in this field. Thus, my short term goals

include joining the grad school and equipping myself with the necessary knowledge and skills in

this field. I want to have a better understanding for this course so that I can be more creative at

my job. My long term goal is to transform my country from a slow paced in technology to a fast

paced country in terms of technology. Kuwait seems to be running late in the technology field

and I would love to change this. My aim is to transform the technology aspect of life in Kuwait

and modernize the servers and databases of the government there. I believe that by pursuing my

Master’s program in electrical engineering at Dayton University will help me achieve this.

In general, I feel that a course in electrical engineering would be the best platform for me to

achieve my goals both academically and in terms of career. Since Dayton produces world class

graduates who are ready to compete in the global world market and transform the world, I want

my impact to be felt not only by the Kuwait citizens but by the entire world. Being able to

change the world to a better place is what drives me and given the technological advancements

that are happening across the world in all fields and sectors of the economy, I want to be that

change and make the world a better place for me, my generation and the generations to come.
