PART A

Q1. Site preparation is a fundamental and challenging activity in the execution of

construction projects by the contractors. Your company was awarded a new multi-
units commercial building project in the area of Johor Bahru. The location of the site
is approximately 50 meters away from the sea with sandy type of soil. The site does
not have significant gradient/slope but is mostly covered with trees and vegetation.
You are required to write a proposal regarding site preparation, which should include,
i. Three (3) main items to be considered during pre-excavation phase,
ii. Five (5) main plants and machineries to be used for site preparation and
earthwork. Justifications of selection of the plants and machineries need to be
highlighted.
iii. Highlight at least two (2) steps to increase the efficiency and control of the
site.
(25 marks)

Q2. A construction company has been awarded a project to construct a new hospital
building block. The proposed new building block is located approximately 50 meters
away from the existing hospital building.
You are required to suggest the best piling method for the proposed new hospital
building block. The suggestions should also include the advantages of using the
suggested piling method in terms of environmental protection, safety, speed, economy
and aesthetics value of site.
(25 marks)

PART B

Q3. Figure Q3 shows the floor slab details for the construction of a building. Based on the
drawings, answer the following questions.

(a) Take-off the quantity of the concrete, formwork and reinforcements for the
floor slab panel A1B1A2B2. All measurements are to be clearly shown in the
dimension paper and must be in accordance with the Standard Method of
Measurement for building works.
(20 marks)

(b) Based on the quantities as in Q3(a) above and the concrete calculation details
as shown below, calculate the total cost of the concrete in the floor slab panel
A1B1A2B2.

CONCRETE CALCULATION DETAILS

The details for calculations are shown below. The concrete is mixed using a
purchased concrete mixer and the pouring, compacting, and leveling is done
manually.

Concrete Grade 20 (1kg Cement: 1.62kg Sand: 3.40 kg Aggregate) poured in

formwork and compacted (cost of formwork and reinforcement are measured
separately

Material

Cement (density 1506 kg/ m3) RM 350.00 per tonne

Sand (density 1602 kg/ m3) RM 45.00 per tonne
Aggregate (density 1922 kg/ m3) RM 65.00 per tonne
Wastage and shrinkage 50%

Labour

Mixing (see detail below)

Labourer carry and pour concrete 1.35 hours/ m3
Concretor compacting concrete 0.80 hours/ m3
Concretor leveling concrete 0.50 hours/ m3
Labourer’s wage for 1 day (8 hours) RM 50.00
Concretor’s wage for 1 day (8 hours) RM 70.00
