enormous in order to be effective. In many cases, a 1-2 carat stone will produce good
benefit if it possesses a high degree of flawlessness and an ideal saturation of color.
Assuming that you are shopping for gemstones that are Jyotish quality (read more about Jyotish
criteria here), below is a guideline for the minimum carat weights of each of the primary
astrological gems.
Ruby: 1 carat is a great starting point. 2 carat rubies, in the quality we require for Jyotish, are
extremely powerful.
Tissue-Nucleated Pearls: 6-7 carats. Tissue-nucleated pearls are a substitute for certified
natural pearls, which are almost extinct. If found in astrological quality, a 3-4 carat certified
natural pearl is very effective. Tissue-nucleated pearls perform the best when they are larger. I
advise people to get 8-10 carat pearls whenever possible. (Read more about Jyotish
pearls here).
Red Coral: 3-4 carats is usually fine. 5 to 8-carat coral cabochons are very powerful. Anything
more than that should only be worn if overheating is not a concern, because very large pieces of
red coral will increase one’s internal fire considerably.
Emerald: 2 carats. We’ve heard stories of great results from super clean, deep green, sattvic 1-
carat emeralds as well. Larger emeralds that are super clean and a nice light minty green are
lovely for Jyotish, and relatively affordable. Larger emeralds that are both super clean and very
deep green are super rare and extremely valuable. (Read more about ideal emerald
quality here.)
Yellow Sapphire: 1.8-2 carats. This is a good gentle dose for energetic benefit. Yellow
sapphires in the 3 to 4-carat range produce more tangible results. Yellow sapphires larger than 4
carats, when fine quality, are extremely powerful. Jupiter is the planet of expansiveness, and it
loves really big stones, but that doesn’t mean they’re necessarily needed in order to obtain
results.
Diamond: 1 carat. 2-carat diamonds are extremely powerful. In all of my years as a Planetary
Gem Advisor, we have only sold one 3-carat diamond for Jyotish.
Blue Sapphire: 1.8-2 carats. 3-4 carats is an ideal, substantial dose of Saturn. I don’t personally
think anybody should wear a blue sapphire that exceeds 5-6 carats, unless extreme overheating
or pitta imbalance is a major concern that needs to be addressed with the gemstone. (Learn
more about the effects of Saturn gemstones here).
Cat’s Eye: 1-2 carats. Caution should be exercised when wearing Ketu stones, so be sure to
know the results to anticipate.
Hessonite (Gomed): 1-2 carats. Caution should be exercised when wearing Rahu stones as
well.
Uparatnas, or secondary gemstones, have planetary benefit but they should be as large as
possible to get good results. They are not as concentrated in energy as the primary astrological
gemstones. A general guideline is 4-5 carats minimum, upwards of 10-12 carats whenever
possible. This is a case where pumping up size is advised, but as always, never compromise on
quality.
GEMSTONE: A KP View

ABOUT GEMSTONE:
Dear friends,
“................Here is wise suggestion of Prof.Krishnamurti ji which is as
following:
When a house is in fire we throw water and sand; when one is lazy, we give
stimulant to control. Therefore, that which will nullify the evil is to be
suggested. That planet which is auspicious,is to be strengthened and its
Gemstone alone is to be used. He also suggests that it is not necessary that the
Gems should touch the body of person who has to put it on.
PROFESSOR KRISHNAMURTI JI has revealed the truth that acquisition of
any Gem is indicated mostly by a benefic. So one acquires when the period of
that planet operates. So ,when you put on the Gem,that good period operates and
so you enjoy and you attribute to the Gem.But the benefic who gives the Gem
as the significators of two is also the significator of 11, you enjoy. But those
unfortunate people have a Gem during the sub period of the significator of 2nd
house who is also the significator of 8 and 12.So,they suffer. Hence they say
that the gem does not suit them.Hence, one should select such a Gem,the lord of
which is the significator of 1 or 2 or 11 and has nothing to do with 8 or
12. …………………………………………..”
It is generally asked that which Gemstone is suitable for me. How to select and
wear the Gemstone itself. Many questions abound in this area with mostly no
real definitive answers. Among a few of the most of the repeated queries are
that if the stone should be natural or can it be treated? Does it have to touch the
skin? What are the clarity and size requirements? What hand should I wear it
on? Which finger should I put it on?
First and foremost please keep in mind that the guiding principle for
prescribing any type of remedy is that it must be as Sattvic as possible.
Although gemstone usage is not indicated as a remedy in the BPHS, other texts
such as the Garuda purana speak of their power quite exhaustively, the Agni
purana too but to a much lesser extent.
The legendary astrologer, Varahahimira, extensively treats the "mystical" power
of gems in his magnificent astrological treatise, the Brihat Samhita. Harihara, in
his monumental work, Prasna Marga, offers explicit advice on imbibing
procedures that can be used for gems.
Professor K.S.Krishnamurty Ji tells us about the selection of Gemstone. I want
to tell very important thing before KP view is quoted here regarding selection of
Gemstones. First of get prepared your Horoscope with KP Astro 3.5 or Parashar
Light , KP Star One or any other authentic software and also get your birth time
rectified by competent KP Astroloser although it is very difficult task for even
well reputed astrologers. If you have got prepared your horoscope as suggested
above then note the sub lord of the ascendant and that of the 11 th cusp. Note
which houses are signified by the these sub lords. If they are not at all connected
in any manner*** with 6,8,or 12 then one may use that COLOUR or that
GEMSTONE which is indicated by the Sub lord of 1st or 11th or both. { In the
above lines you have noted that If they are not at all connected in any
manner*** with 6,8,or 12 then one may use that COLOUR or that GEMSTONE
which is indicated by the Sub lord of 1st or 11th or both. If the Sub lord of the
ascendant or the 11th cusp happens to be the significator of 6th or 8th or 12th
reject the colour indicated by such a sub-lord. In these lines the term in any
manner*** as quoted above requires very cautious reading.I’m of the opinion
that in any manner means that the planet while judging should be judged at
different level such as at the level of sign lord, starlord, sub lord, sub’s star lord
and sub lord also }. If the Sub lord of the ascendant or the 11th cusp happens to
be the significator of 6th or 8th or 12th reject the colour indicated by such a sub-
lord. Similarly one has to make selection of the colour and also the metal.
Prof.Krishnamurty ji further tells that if such a minute calculation could not be
done then one can note the sign in which the ascendant has fallen and one can
make his / her selection according to the Gems suitable for each sign as given
below:
Aries Amethyst,Diamond
Taurus Emerald
Gemeni Aquamarine,Agate
Cancer Ruby
Leo Ruby,Diamond
Virgo Sapphire-yellow Sapphire
Libra Opal,Diamond
Scorpio Topaz
Sagittarius Turquoise
Capricorn Garnet
Aquarius Sapphire,Amethyst
Pisces Aquamarine
If one knows which planet is favourable to him then according to the nature of
the planet he /she can use that Gem which is mentioned below:
For-
Sun Ruby
Moon Pearl
Mars Coral
Mercury Emerald
Jupiter Yellow Sapphire , Topaz
Venus Diamond
Saturn Blue Sapphire
Rahu & Ketu Agate or Turquise
The metal which is considered to be governed by each planet is as follows:
Sun Gold, Copper
Moon Silver
Mars Copper
Mercury Gold, Quick Silver
Venus Platinum, Silver, Silver& Copper
Jupiter Tin
Saturn Lead
Rahu & Ketu Alloy
In the above lines you have noted that If they are not at all connected in any
manner*** with 6,8,or 12 then one may use that COLOUR or that GEMSTONE
which is indicated by the Sub lord of 1st or 11th or both. If the Sub lord of the
ascendant or the 11th cusp happens to be the significator of 6th or 8th or 12th
reject the colour indicated by such a sub-lord. In these lines the term in any
manner*** as quoted above requires very cautious reading. I’m of the opinion
that in any manner means that the planet while judging should be judged at
different level such as at the level of sign lord, starlord, sub lord, sub’s star lord
and sub lord also.
While suggesting a few lerned astrologers find that a particular planet in its
period will give adverse result to a person. So to mitigate the evil effect they
soggest the stone or Gem governed by that malefic planet. But according to
professor Krishnamurthi ji,it is wrong and actually doing harm to the
consultant.Suppose Venus has to cause Diabeties ,if one suggests that sweets
are governed by Venus and one taking much of sweets, will reduce the evil
effects of Venus, how far this learned astrologer will be helpful to the patient.
Again if Mars donates arrogance, independence, disobidiance, etc and thereby
Mars threatens dispute among husband and wife, what is the meaning of
suggesting to put on Red Coral or Ruby indicated by Mars or to keep ready a
revolver loaded ,governed by Mars.Suppose due to evil Mars, one’s hut is in
fire, consider how wise the learned adviser is,if he has suggested to poor highly
inflamble ones on the fire, since inflamble ones are governed by Mars.
Similarly if Saturn indicates laziness, lethargic tendencies and slow in one’s
action, How can there be any benefit by painting the wall with the blue
colour, purchasing blue cloth for curtain and Blue Car for his / her house. The
result will be similar to an old Saturn i.e deaf person crossing the road and the
Saturn afflicted driver or owner delaying in reducing the speed by applying the
brake. You know what the result would be.The Car driver would hit the deaf
person.
If Moon is evil and threatens, drowning in one’s horoscope and if one uses
PEAERL according to advice of Pandit Ji or Umang Taneza Ji,do you know
what will happen?Mind you,Moon will keep him for some hours by the side of
Pearls at the bottom of the sea or river and after few hours, lift the dead body up
to the surface and carry the bloated dead body to the shore.Would you like to go
to the shore in same condition if Your moon is evil and if your adviser has
advised you to put on flawless PEARL. You will say NOOOOOOOOOOO.
Here is wise suggestion of Prof.Krishnamurti ji which is as following:
When a house is in fire we throw water and sand; when one is lazy, we give

12.
Regarding selection of Gemstone traditional view differs from above and mostly
traditional astrologers add fuel to the fire but not all.
My personal view is that weak*** and benefic planet should be strengthened
and strong and malefic planet should be given antidote and propitiated. Here
the definition of weak is very wide***.Suppose for cancer ascendant Red Coral
Is Suggested, if Mars is spoiled with Rahu and Rahu must not be strengthened
in any manner rather it should be propitiated.
Now I deal with size and other aspect of Gemstones. My instinct tells me that
one should get something reasonably large, say a yellow sapphire that is 5 carats
or more-obviously this can't be done with diamonds or rubies unless you are
quite rich. You, must, must get an eye-clean gem at the least. Eye clean means
there are no visible "defects" in the gem that can be seen without the aid of
magnification. The following is NOT an exhaustive list of common flaws found
in particular gemstones: no black specks in yellow sapphires, no dents in pearls,
no specks in diamonds, no white specks or hairline cracks on the backside of
red corals (Most Red Corals come in a cabochon cut- you must inspect the
backside as many defects are usually present here). They say that it is virtually
impossible to get a suitable eye clean emerald these days (without fine hairline
fractures) - my answer to this is quite simple- if you can't find one then don't get
one. We cannot bend the rules and allow for exceptions just because mother
nature does not gift us with the same treasures she gave in abundance when the
ancient texts dealing with gems were written. I know what you are thinking.
Why did he say what he said about the Pearl ? Isn't an artificially nucleated
pearl bending the rules? Yes, it probably is...so maybe you shouldn't get that
either. Are you beginning to see a pattern here? I'm not really fond of gems as
remedial measures; there are simply too many qualifications to consider. In
which case I must ask, what do you need a stone for any way?! I estimate that a
jyotish quality Ruby may exceed $10,000 in cost! Yes, you read that right.
Before you are completely overcome with disappointment at thought of not
being able to afford a stone you should know that many astrological gem
dealers also offer much less expensive alternate stones. Having never used
them, I cannot comment on their efficacy. I suppose if you can acquire one for a
modest price it might be worth trying. In fact, Varahamihira does mention some
of the alternates in his Brihat Samhita. Selecting and wearing gemstones, jyotish
quality gemstone that is, is an expensive and often confusing proposition. Ask
10 different astrologers for a gemstone recommendation and you may very well
end up with 10 different suggestions. Of course there is the concept of Ratna-
Arpana which involves donating a stone in order to reap it benefits, clearly in
this case the stone never touches the body at all! To be on the safe side have the
stone set so it touches the skin- though it will probably work fine even if its
somewhere really close but not touching your skin. When you are ready to put
the stone on for the first time do it on the day of the graha who rules the stone,
do it in the hora of that graha as well, so early morning. Though do soak the
stone in milk overnight first. You may even wish to recite the graha or devata
mantra for the stone in question each week on the appropriate day and hour.
There is one last crucial consideration I have left out and this involves testing
the stone before purchasing it.
You must, must test the stone for a week or so before purchasing it. If your
jeweler refuses then you need to find another more accommodating jeweler.
Speaking of jewelers...don't ever let a jeweler give you a gem recommendation,
the conflict of interest is simply too high. Back to the topic at hand, carefully
tape the stone to your hand or tuck it under your pillow and "test-drive" it. Bad
thoughts, feelings, dreams and events apart from the every-day bad stuff we
think about and experience would instantly lead me to discard the stone- don't
throw it away, send it back to your jeweler.
In concluding lines once again I’m referring here KP views that one should
select such a Gem, the lord of which is the significator of 1 or 2 or 11 and has
nothing to do with 8 or 12.But arriving at this pin point requires a profound
knowledge of both KP & traditional views.
This is totally a wrong notion because wearing wrong gemstones can have a
devastating effects on our life health and fortune.Late Krishnamuthyji says that one
should wear gemstones based on the strongest and best placement of his/her planet
in the chart and the houses they signify.Unlike the Vedic astrologers who prescribe
gemstones on lagna and the trines even if they signify the bad houses 6,8 and
12,KP says that gemstones should only be worn for planets which signify the good
houses 1,3,10 and 11 and not either of the 6th,8th or 12th houses. So for example in
case of tauraus ascendant the raj-yoga planet is saturn which signifies 9th and 10th
houses ,one should not blindly wear the gemstone of saturn, even if it signifies
either 6th,8th or 12 th house, despite saturn being the param yoga kari planet of
Taurus ascendant. The best remedy in astrology I have seen from my practice is to
chant the mantras of the best planet in the chart instead of wearing any costly
gemstone by shelling out huge extra bucks or at least should a gemstone be
essential to wear for a best significator planet it should not exceed more than one.It
is just same as medical science that if a patient takes unnecessary medicines it
would have an adverse effect on his/her health,so a good astrologer like a good
doctor prescribes only one gemstone,at the maximum, which is most suitable to be
worn by his client.Otherwise it would be better not to wear any gemstones.
