introduction

Rockets in real life are complicated. They require a lot of resources to

create and lots of professional engineers and scientists in order to create one.
Rocket is one of the most advanced technology that humans have ever made.
It could travel beyond the gravitational pull of our Earth and reach other stars
located far away in the universe. The mentioned things that is very important
to this invention are still not enough for the rocket to work. In order for the
rocket to be launched, or even to be made, it requires high level of physics
studies. This is why physics is one of the most important subject that could
drive human’s invention and technology to move on forever.
For this project, even though we aren’t making a real rocket that requires
as much physics studies as the real rocket, the basic concepts and
understanding are still the same. One of the easiest concept that could be
learnt, understood, observed and used in this project is the Newton’s Third
Law. As rocket releases its fuel through its bottom part, forces are visible to
analyze. The force that the rocket releases, pushes the ground / air and fly
up. This is obviously the action force. The ground / air then response back by
also applying force back to the rocket, pushing it to the sky, or as we call
reaction force. In our case, the water uses the same concept of action and
reaction forces. This is why, to understand the third law, we have to perform
a “Water bottle rocket.”
objective

To understand how rocket works a bit better.

To apply knowledge that we gained in class to this project.
And to understand Newton’s Third Law, Air resistance and
other knowledge we gained in class better.
To design a rocket that stays in the air the longest
To symbolized our loyalty to the supreme leader of Thailand(it
won’t stay up long)
To learn from this project from our mistakes or why we lost the
competition

procedure

Plan out the rocket by drawing

Prepare all the materials for making the rocket
Prepare each part:
Rocket body:
Cut the bottom part of one of the bottles
Make a hole on the top of a bottle cap
Stick a pinch of clay inside another bottle cap on the
other side
Join both bottles together with duct tape.
Rocket’s head:
Roll a hard-skin paper into a cone shape.
Staple and tape it up then cut the unused parts out.
Rocket’s wing
Cut out a piece of plastic cardboard.
Divide the cardboard into 3 parts for each wing.
Measure and draw all of the wings on the cardboard
then cut them out.
Put all parts together:
Put the rocket’s head onto the bottle that has clay
attached to it.
Use tape to stick the wings onto the bottle
Decorate the bottle with color spray and logos.

analysis

The parts of the rockets are estimated to be as we planned.

The following are the analysis of each parts:
-  Cone is sharp and long so that the rocket can cut through air
easier than the bottle cap side.
-  The wings are made big so that the rocket’s rotation couldn’t
be change much
-  The decorations and parts are not made to be too heavy so
that the rocket would be easier to be launched

The error of this rocket is that the body of the rocket aren’t
made from the same type of plastic so that the weight are
slightly different and could mess up the prediction.

conclusion

Our rocket is made of a full size plastic bottle attached to a

half a bottle, sharp cone and three big wings. For the bottle
part, we chose to not decrease the bottle capacity is because
the bottle would be able to fit more water and apply more force
onto the ground. A sharp cone that we put on the top is to make
the rocket more aerodynamic and cut through air to travel
farther. Lastly, the big three wings are used for making sure
that the rocket will not turn around much. These thing will
make the rocket fly in the sky longer.
recommendation

The recommendation that we realize is that we should try out

both of the bottle together before we finalize it. This is to make
sure that the bottles will fit in each others body, or else it will be
messy. For the wings, we should make a little bit larger wings so
that we could observe the effect of the wing on the rocket’s launch
more clearly.
