Function a: meeting someone for the first time

Greetings

Jordanians are very friendly and spend much of the time greeting each other. The followi-
ing greetings are commonly used to mean “welcome” “hello” or “nice to meet you”:

The usual reply is: ‫أهال فيك‬ and you (to a man) ahla fiik
‫أهال فيكي‬ and you (to a woman) ahla fiiki

When you meet someone for the first time you will also need to be able to introduce yours-
self and ask for the other person’s name.
‫انا اسمي إميلي تايلور‬ ana ésmi Emily Taylor

This literally translates as “I, my name is Emily Taylor” ana ana. (I) however is only used
for emphasis, so you can say just: esmi Emily Taylor (arabic - same thing) (My name is
Emily Taylor).

esmi (arabic) (my name) is actually made up of two parts: the noun esem (arabic) (a
name) and the ending - i (arabic) (my). You can use these endings, called attached pron-
nouns, with most nouns to indicate something belongs to someone, for example:

Question word “what” The word shu (arabic) (what) is used at the beginning
of the sentence and marks a question.

As we mentioned above, in the sentence (ana esmi Emily Taylor), the ana is used for
emphasis and is called a personal pronoun. Below are the personal pronouns you will
practice in this chapter:

Jordanians will also be very interested to know where you come from. The conversations

The word (menween) is actually a contraction of two words:

There is no ‘it’ in Arabic. All non-human nouns are either masculine or feminine. Hum-
man nouns can be either, depending on the person you are talking about. You can usually
identify feminine nouns because they end with a taa marbuuta (a) or (a).

You must choose between the masculine and feminine form of the word when you are
talking about your mihne (mihne) (occupation). Remember you can identify feminine
nouns because they end with a taa marbuuta a a a a.

M: When did you arrive?
E: I arrived on Saturday.
M: Did you come by yourself?
E: Yes, I came by myself because my husband still had business in Australia.
M: Oh, you’re married. Do you have any children.
E: No, we don’t. We have a cat, but we left it with my mom in Australia.
M: Really? There are lots of cats here.
E: Yes, I saw them in the street.
M: You’ve already done a tour of Amman?
E: Yes. I went yesterday with my friend Rima and we ate at a lovely restaurant.
M: Where did you eat?
E: I forgot it’s name, but it was a restaurant downtown. The atmosphere was great and
the food superb.
M: You’re Australian, aren’t you? Where did you work before?
E: In a secondary school in the city of Sydney in the state of New South Wales. Have
you been to Australia?
M: No, I haven’t been to Australia but I went to New Zealand last year. My cousin lives
there.
E: Why didn’t you go to Australia seeing as how you were in New Zealand?
M: Because I didn’t have enough time.
E: How long were you there?
M: A week.
E: Just a week? New Zealand is such long way away. That’s terrible!
M: I know. I wish I would have had more time.
E: Next time perhaps (better luck next time). Excuse me sir, but I have an appointment at

E: I’m watching TV. There is a program on called “Focus” whish is talking aobut the
state of the population. They are saying that the population of Jordan is now 5.5
million.
R: Since when have you been interested in anthropology? What the story?
E: I’m not really. There is nothing else to do. I was bored so I said to myself I’d talk to
you to see if we could go and smoke the hubble bubble pipe in Abdoun. But seeing as
how you have an exam, leave it for another time.
R: We could go tomorrow if you like. My exam’s in the morning and I don’t have
anything in the afternoon.
E: Okay, sounds good. So I will see you tomorrow. I hope you do well on your test.
R: Thanks. See you tomorrow then, God willing.
