Introduction
Wärtsilä received reports about failing of the power supply units which are part of
the pulse lubrication cabinets E40 and E44. The power supply units supply power
to the lubricating system components and monitoring devices (user interface).
The power supply units in question are delivered by the maker Phoenix Contact.

Phoenix Contact has reported that failing power supply units have been delivered
to Wärtsilä. Wärtsilä confirms that some installations with Pulse Lubricating
Systems (PLS) or Retrofit Pulse Lubricating Systems (RPLS) including electric
cabinets E40 and E44 are affected by the failure of this power supply units.

RT-flex engines with Pulse Lubricating System without E40 and E44 cabinets are
not affected. The power supply unit type and maker is different

Note:
Not all the Phoenix Contact power supply units have already failed, but there is a
risk of failure in the identified units when the temperature is increasing.

Failure location
Phoenix Contact has identified the power supply model. The faulty power supply
unit model is labelled at the rear with:

QUINT-PS-3X400-500AC/24DC/5

The reason of the failure is a short circuit of the input rectifier, an internal
component (diode) of the power supply unit.

Based on the root cause analysis made by Phoenix Contact, the failure can occur
in power supply units which were produced in the period:

Week 13 / Year 2010 to Week 21 / Year 2011

Any power supply units produced before and after the stated period have not
shown the same deficiency. As a corrective action Phoenix Contact changed the
diode supplier. Power supply units with revision 21 are equipped with diodes of
the new supplier.

Check of revision and date

The power supply units are part of the Pulse Lubrication Cabinets E40 and E44.
Depending on the Pulse Lubrication Cabinet E40 or E44, the number of installed
power supply units is different.

• E40 cabinet contains 4 (four) power supply units.

• E44 cabinet contains 2 (two) power supply units.

The revision number and production date have to be checked on each power
supply unit. The information is located at the rear of the power supply units.

Attention:
Make sure to check also the spare Phoenix Contact power supply unit.

The revision number has to be checked first. If the revision number is not
“REV 21” then the “Date” has to be checked as well according to the encoded
production dates as listed in Table 1.

Issue 1, Page 4 / 8

If the production date corresponds with one of the encoded production dates as
listed in Table 1 and the revision number is not “REV 21” then the power supply
unit must be replaced.

Checking and replacement procedure

Note:
The prescribed procedure has to be followed for checking the revision and
production date of the Phoenix Contact power supply units. The same procedure
applies also for the replacement of suspected power supply units.

Procedure for the E40 cabinets

Stop the main engine before checking or removing the power supply units.

1. Locate in the right upper part of the E40 cabinet the power supply units and
the breakers below them, see Figure 2.
2. Move all breakers of the power supply units “F500”,”F501”,”F1” and “F2” into
position “Open”. Check one more time if they are completely isolated and
there is no voltage.
3. Disconnect all the cable plugs from the power supply units and remove them
from the rail base, see Figure 3.
4. Remove the power supply units and check the revision number and
production date on the label located at the rear.
− If the production date of the power supply unit is not within the range as
per Table 1, place it back and continue with step 6.
− If the production date of the power supply unit is within the range as per
Table 1, place it back and fill in the Warranty Claim Report and continue
with step 5.
5. As soon the new power supply unit is available, repeat the instructions step 1
to 3 and replace the damaged power supply unit. Finalise the replacement job
with step 6.
6. Connect all the cable plugs and turn all breakers of the power supply units into
position “Close”.

by the breakers “F11” and “F21” into position “Open”, see Figure 4.
Check one more time if they are completely isolated and there is no voltage.
2. Locate the power supply units in the upper part of the E44 cabinet.
3. Disconnect both plugs located above and below of each power supply unit.
4. Remove the power supply units and check the revision number and
production date on the label located at the rear.
− If the production date of the power supply unit is not within the range as
per Table 1, place it back and continue with step 6.
