The geology of the Greek petroleum system and the hydrocarbon

deposits in our country
Panagiotis Vergoulis
Mining and metallurgical engineer, MSc Environment and development,
National Technical University of Athens (bergmet@yahoo.com )

Every petroleum system has its source rocks, which produce hydrocarbons under certain conditions, its
reservoirs, which store hydrocarbons, its traps, which collect hydrocarbons, and its cap rocks that seal
and protect the hydrocarbons. The mechanism of migration of petroleum is of major importance in order
to understand the concepts stated above. This mechanism has not yet been fully understood, but it is
commonly accepted that petroleum migrates from the source rock to a geological formation where it is
trapped (namely, in the trap). It is quite impressive that it is believed that less than 10% of the oil
produced in the source rock is trapped in a trap.
In Greece, studies have demonstrated the existence of abundant traps, many of which are likely to have
been destroyed, as surface indications of hydrocarbons, which are interpreted as inability to trap and
therefore form a field, are frequent (e.g. Keri, Zakynthos island). It is highly positive that in many parts
of the country there are all the prerequisites for having a petroleum system (source rocks, reservoirs,
cap rocks, traps), while in some parts these systems are proven.
However, it is clear that there is a differentiation regarding the geology of the petroleum system in
Eastern and in Western Greece, as the possible oil-bearing areas are located in the neogenic basins of
Eastern Greece and in the orogenic system of the external zones of the Hellenides (in the Alpine and
Post-Alpine sedimentary basins) of Western Greece.
The main source rock found in Western Greece is the Jurassic Posidonia Shale (with a remarkable to very
high hydrocarbon potential), while in Eastern Greece the most common source rocks are the Miocene
and Oligocene clays. The petroleum traps in Western Greece are mainly tectonic and are mostly found in
the underwater area of the Ionian Sea, while in Eastern Greece, apart from the tectonic ones, there are
many cases of stratigraphic traps as well. The cap rocks in Western Greece are mainly formed by
Oligocene flysch and evaporites (Miocene and Triassic), while in eastern Greece they are made of clay
and Messinian and Late Miocene evaporites (Prinos, North Prinos, Epsilon fields). Finally, the reservoirs
in both Eastern and Western Greece consist either of limestones with poor porosity, which is improved
by the presence of microcracks or by sandstones with good porosity.
The only hydrocarbon fields that have been identified by studies in the whole of Greece until today are
the oil fields of Katakolo, Ilia (1981), Prinos (1974), North Prinos (1994) and Epsilon, Thracian Sea
(2001), the South Kavala natural gas field, Thracian Sea (1972), Epanomi, Halkidiki (1989) and asphalt
field in Zakynthos. Apart from the ones mentioned, hydrocarbon discoveries in the area of the Thracian
Sea were made by drilling also in East Thasos, Athos and Ammodis. Four out of the ten hydrocarbon
discoveries are being exploited today, while some of the others need complementary research for their
development to be achieved.
It is worth mentioning that a hydrocarbon field can be certified only by drilling. Geological, geophysical
and seismic methods are used by companies in order to find the appropriate drilling targets and identify
the possible oil-bearing areas. Very often potential fields, i.e. resources that have not yet been certified
by any drilling, are mistakenly reported as fields, as the possibility of them not existing is extremely
high.

ATLAS OF LAVRION MINERALS
-Lavrion (Lavreotiki) is one of the Earth's best "Laboratories" of Mineralogy. Its history is lost in Antiquity
and there are thousands of collectors and numerous Museums that have samples from Lavrion. New
minerals are being added to the known list of mineral species from Lavrion. The idea is to upload
beautiful images of Lavrion minerals to the site of IACLM in facebook,
https://www.facebook.com/groups/115645832341118/ ,and after gathering the so-called Lavrion
mineralogical species, we believe that it can be proposed to an International Publishing House, for
example. Elsevier, Springer-Verlag GmbH, etc. to fund and publish a monumental scientific work in
Mineralogy: The illustrated ATLAS OF LAVRION MINERALS which will surely become a best-seller
worldwide. This project will also include the names of all collectors, museums, educational institutes,
organizations etc. that will contribute with excellent quality photographs from their collection to the
site of the International Association of Collectors of Minerals of Lavrio. With this thinking you can
continue to upload mineral photos of Lavrion specimens with exact description and dimensions. So
everyone can follow the path of the first of the two projects we have announced. The dream will come
true if everyone helps.

The effort began on February 23, 2018, Friday, at 12 noon , with a multilateral “ mineralogical” presentation ,
as described in the School's announcement to Messrs. Parents of pupils. It should be noted that in a work on a
subject that "touches" on our life, but also in every job, whether it concerns work in a Public Service , a Business,
Scouting, etc., there must be three prerequisites: a. Keeping work-hours b. Active participation and c. Performance.
Well, we inform you that at the beginning of this two-month “mineralogical” effort that began on February 23rd at
PEDAGOGIKI BIRDS school there were the three pre-requisites a, b, and c as well as a fourth one, ie
a. We were ALL on time (Students, school teachers and ourselves)
b. There was active participation by all (students, teachers and ourselves )
c. The performance of all was excellent and the fourth prerequisite was
d. EXCITEMENT and CURIOSITY.

Note that in photograph above not all the rock layers ("strata") in the outcrop stand up equally well to

away. As a result, the shale layers are recessed into the face of the outcrop. The sandstone layers are
enriched in the mineral quartz, which is very stable at Earth-surface conditions. The quartz-rich
sandstone is therefore more resistant to erosion. Because it is tougher, it stands out in high relief on the
face of the outcrop. Geologists refer to this as differential weathering. Different materials weather away
at different rates.

Amethyst as a Healer
Permanthea Teloniatou
Email: permanthea@gmail.com
Amethyst is the purple version of the Quartz mineral.
Its molecular formula is SiO2, and its color is due to traces of iron impurities. Amethyst is found in all
shades of light pink, violet to dark purple. Amethyst crystallizes into the triangular system, usually with
hexahedral prisms ending in pyramids with six lateral seats, the peaks of which protrude. Its hardness is
7 on the Mohs scale. Amethyst gets often under heat treatment to turn in yellow color with the name
Citrine. Many times the color changes to light green, with the trade name Prasiolite or Green Amethyst.
We also see Amethyst as a crown in Scepters as we will see below. The beautiful color makes the crystal of
Amethyst very popular, and while in antiquity it was one of the most expensive stones, today it is widely
available in various shapes and sizes that make it more accessible.
Amethyst has been associated with many myths and legends in numerous cultures.
The ancient Greeks believed that Amethyst could protect them against drunkenness, and they were
wearing jewels of Amethyst or they were decorating their glasses of wine with this stone. The name
amethyst comes from the greek letter - and the words , .
According to a Greek myth, Amethyst was a young virgin priestess of the Goddess Artemis, who was the
object of the wrath of God Dionysus after he had drunk much red wine.
God desiring the young virgin and unable to conquer her, he sent his tigers to scare the Amethyst while
she was walking in the woods. She screamed and cried Goddess Artemis for help. The Goddess
transformed the girl immediately into a white, shiny stone (Quartz). When Dionysus realized what had
happened, he felt remorse for his actions and humiliated and repentant shed wine on this stone as an
offering to Goddess Artemis and since then these crystals are painted in violet color by the name
Amethyst.
The Romans believed that if the symbols of the Sun and the Moon were engraved on an Amethyst, they
would have been fortunate. The kings wore Amethyst as a symbol of power, and some Amethysts still
decorate the British Royal Jewelry. In Israel, as mentioned in John's revelation, the walls of Jerusalem
had 12 precious stones in their foundations. The first stone they placed was Jasper, and then comes
Sapphire, Chalcedony, Emerald, Sardonyx, Sardius, Goldstone, Beryl, Topaz, Chrysoprasius, Yakinthos
or else Zircon and Amethyst. Each of the twelve gates made of Pearls.
Today we find Amethysts mainly in Canada, Brazil, Uruguay, Ontario, Mexico, North Carolina,
Pennsylvania and Colorado. In a mine in South Zambia it is said that the largest amethyst in the world
has been found. The Greek Amethyst is also considered among the best Amethysts all over the world and
that is why there is a great demand from the collectors!
Amethyst is a protective stone. It balances everything around it, turning every into love. It protects
against any kind of damage, including geopathic or electromagnetic stress. Amethyst relieves stress,
soothes irritability, balances mood, and dissolves anger, fear and anxiety.
It relieves sorrow and dissolves negativity.
Amethyst activates spiritual awareness, opens intuition and enhances mental abilities. It works for our
6th chakra and the nervous system.Amethyst encourages sobriety, thus helping to fight addictions.
It strengthens memory and helps to remember and understand dreams. It relieves insomnia. It
encourages selflessness and spiritual wisdom. It relieves physical, emotional and psychological pain or
anxiety. Amethyst facilitates headaches and releases tension. You can wear Amethyst in a jewel, or
meditate by holding Amethyst crystals or decorate your space with Amethyst crystals and you will
immediately feel calmer and why not wiser!!!!
Amethysts are also great for your home as they can balance everything around them. Place an Amethyst
to the entrance of your home or office and you will feel more secure and stable!

The Scepter as a Healer
Permanthea Teloniatou , e-mail: permanthea@gmail.com
Scepters are long crystals with a second crystal formation, often formed above the top.The crystal called
Scepter is a crystal consisting of a Quartz crystal as a body and a second Quartz formed at the top of this
body as a crown. The lower part is called a body and the upper part is called a crown. The body as well as
the crown can be found in a variety of quartzes such as Smoky Quarzt, Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Citrine
or even Clusters or Calcites. The Scepters were considered as symbols of power in Lemuria and Atlantis
and were used by priests and wise men, and today they are very rare and real ornaments for each
collection.Scepters are symbols of power. They are respectable power units and must be used wisely.
Scepter facilitates the delivery of higher vibrations. Scepter stimulates the aura, opens the creative mind
and helps the manifestation of the thought in physical form.It balances all our chakras, but has a special
affinity with the heart chakra. Keeping the crystal at the level of your heart with the top viewing the
heart, you will get many benefits like serenity, calm and peace. They are powerful talismans and help in
progress and new beginnings. They are strong conductors of Universal Energy and also help in the
reproduction system and higher libido. They are perfect energy generators for your home. Place one or
two Scepters in the center of your home and you will immediately notice the difference in the atmosphere.
Everything will become better and happier!!USA, Brazil, Austria, Gran Canarias are some of places in
the world where we can find Scepters. Rhode Island is known for the rare scepters that was found there.
Greece is also a place where amazing pieces of Scepters have been found. Some of the Scepters in the
photos are hand polished by Mr. Omiros Petrá ek, a perfectionist facet cutter and great artist on the

Stones can look like the most sedentary beings on the planet, but in the spiritual field they contain
energy fields that are constantly irradiating with pure and lively energy. Stone is the multivitamin of the
soul. No crystal can assume responsibility for any decisions taken by a person. The only responsibility
that a crystal can take is to keep you as conscious as possible in these decisions. Each stone is
synchronized in its own way to human vibration in an attempt to restore within you the inner light. All
energy work in no way replaces conventional medical or psychological diagnosis and treatment.

Energy minerals, How do we locate them by geological exploration , A Case history
The methodology used in geological research to locate deposits of various minerals depends on the type
of minerals we want to locate in conjunction with the geology of the area to be explored.
Geoexploration for uranium deposits in Western Macedonia ,Northern Greece will differ from
Geoexploration for uranium deposits in Sahara ,Africa , concerning methodology. Geological research
uses various methods such as the geochemical method and the geophysical method.
All measurements to be taken from these research methods will be mapped on an map of an
appropriate scale to delineate the most favorable areas for further research.
However, the interpretation of the results from the measurements that will result either from
geochemical research or from geophysical research will be important when the area is properly mapped
from Geology point of view. The more methods we use to explore an area , the greater certainty
exists for the results. In the case of uranium exploration , due to the natural radioactivity emitted by
uranium and generally radioactive minerals, a rapid, reliable exploration method is the radiometric
survey (scanning) of the area to be explored.
Let us see an example from Greece and specifically from Western Macedonia:
Figure 1: Shows the general geological map (According to Osswald, modified)
Figure 2: The radiometric road network, i.e. the entire road network in which the total natural
radioactivity of the geological formations that the roads crossed, is displayed.
Figure 3: Areas of natural radioactivity or the distribution of natural radioactivity in the area, as
measured in the field work and statistical processing of natural radioactivity values, are displayed.
ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS -39- Vol 33- No 193 - 2018
-It is worth to note that exploration in reconnaissance scale in the area was completed (field work +
data processing in the laboratory) in 1981, i.e. five years before the Chernobyl nuclear accident (April
1986). Thus, the distribution of natural radioactivity in the area (but also throughout Greece) was not
affected by any additional contamination from the radioactivity emitted at that time by the Chernobyl
nuclear reactor accident.
From the combined geological and geophysical (radiometric) research, it has emerged that the granite
rocks of the region, the zone centered on the tertiary Almopia Tertiary volcanic rocks and extensive
sediments adjacent to the previous rocks, are the most favorable geological formations for follow-up
exploration to locate uranium mineralization. Some Tertiary volcanic rocks in the general area in the
lithospheric plates of the Aegean Sea , Greece , are associated with uranium mineralization and high
radioactivity.
Using numerical averages of radioactivity from the Western Macedonia radiometric coverage as well as
other geological and geochemical data from various volcanic rocks in Greece and neighboring areas as
well as geologically similar areas elsewhere on Earth, it is possible with comparative Geology to draw
useful conclusions that will direct us to the next research step.
It should be reported that Maratos' view that deposits of radioactive minerals in the Volcanic Rocks of
Almopia zone , mainly in the mountain of Kožuf and on Greek side , but mainly on Yugoslavian
territory, has been reported in his book Geology of Greece in 1972 and the “mainly on Yugoslavian
territory” was reported , because the volcanic rocks of Almopia Zone in Greece has not been
systematically investigated for the mineralization of radioactive minerals.
It should be noted that exploration with the same methodology in the region of Central, Eastern
Macedonia and Thrace led to the detection of uranium mineralization expressed in the form of crystals
of secondary uranium minerals.
In Figures 3 and 4 it appears that the located zone of high total radioactivity (see red arrow) with a
NNW-SSE direction has a width of about 24 kilometers and a length of 48 kilometers and extends to the
borders of Greece and FYROM. The border line between Greece and FYROM has an WSW-ENE direction
and virtually cuts this zone that extends NWN within FYROM. The borders between Countries are
defined by the people, but the mountains, the rivers, the lakes, the plains and all the geomorphologic
and geological formations that host mineral deposits enter from one country to the other, and of course
in such a case geological research requires intrastate co-operation for a geological study of this zone as
a whole for excellent results and reduction of environmental impacts. One case of a large project was
reported in the previous issue (ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS, November-December 2017)
with the proposed project of Danube River connection with the Aegean Sea, requiring the cooperation of
several countries in the Balkan Peninsula and the collaboration of many scientists for many years. The
same is also the case with hydrocarbon pockets (oil deposits) in a common continental shelf or
hydrocarbon pockets (oil deposits) entering from a country's EEZ to another country's EEZ.
-Plentity of data on igneous rocks of Greece are cited by Georgia-Pe Piper and David J.E. Piper ,2002).
Under certain conditions the distribution of radioactive elements in the igneous rocks of a wider
geotectonic zone in combination with other geological and geochemical data may indicate the direction
of geotechnical phenomena in relation to the theory of the Plate Tectonics (Minatidis ,D.G. – Whalen,J.B.
1976 , Augustithis, SS - Minatidis, DG , 1979).
One of the collectors of radioactive minerals in Greece Mr. Evangelos Leivadas has written an article on
Some notes on radioactive minerals and photographs of minerals from his collection , ORYKTOLOGIKA
NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS, vol.31, No185, September-October,2016 . (vangelislei@gmail.com )
• On the occasion of the presentation and results in uranium exploration in Western Macedonia in
Northern Greece, it is very important to repeat what we mentioned in page 3 of this issue:
«There is a lot of talk about Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ), International Law of the Sea with the known conflicts
between Countries . Exclusive Economic Zones exist in the Sea and the Land. A Country surrounded by its borders
(land and sea) is an Exclusive Economic Zone. We are convinced that the time is close when man will realize that the
whole Planet Earth where Humanity lives is an EEZ and so no room for conflict. This has to be taught in schools, and
it is the only way for the people to change their mind and hence their way of life. People must be real and more simple.
This has already begun with Climate Change, where there are no and there cannot be any borders and Exclusive
Economic Zones in the infinite Space surrounding the planet Earth.»
