EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE
ON PRESSURE
Pressure re-rating due to thermal effects maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP), metres head - PE100
The pressure rating of Polyethylene (PE) pressure pipe shall be based on the temperature of the pipe wall, which may be
determined from either:
a. an assumption of a constant pipe wall temperature typical for continuous service at a set temperature.
b. the determination of an average service temperature where temperature variations are likely to occur in a
predictable pattern.
c. the maximum service temperature less 10°C for installations where large unpredictable temperature variations
occur up to a maximum of 80°C.
d. For items (a) (b) and (c), the MAOP shall be in accordance with values in the above tables.
NOTE:
The values tabled are for pipe manufactured to AS/NZS 4130 and fittings made from the compounds complying with
AS/NZS 4131.
The times given in years as (36y) are allowable extrapolation limits obtained by applying the factors in table 1 of ISO 9080
to two years of test data at 80°C. Where appopriate, specific advice should be obtained from Enviropipes, and data provided
shall be derived from testing to ISO 9080.

SUPPORT SPANS
EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION
For above ground pressure pipelines, expansion and contraction movements should be taken up by the pipeline
where possible without expansion joints.
This may be achieved in lines laid directly on the natural surface by snaking the pipe during installation
and allowing the pipe to move freely in service. Where the final joint connections are made in high ambient
temperatures, sufficient pipe length must be allowed to permit the pipe to cool, and hence contract without
pulling out of non end load bearing joints.

FLEXIBLE PIPES
Pipe behavior can generally be classified as flexible or rigid, depending on how it performs when installed.
Flexible pipe must move, or deflect, to transfer the overburden to the surrounding soil. Structured and single wall
corrugated pipes are all examples of flexible pipe. Flexible pipes are designed to transfer loads through deflection
which leads to mostly deformation without structural damage providing many advantages.
Rigid pipe is commonly defined as a pipe which does not deflect more than 2% without structural distress, and as
such, it must be designed to carry the majority of the load directly. Reinforced and non-reinforced concrete pipes
are both examples of rigid pipe.
Both flexible and rigid pipe depend on proper backfill. In the case of flexible pipe, deflection allows loads to be
transferred to and carried by the backfill. Rigid pipe transmits most of the load through the pipe wall into the
bedding. In both cases, proper backfill is very important in allowing this transfer to occur.

STORAGE AND HANDLING
INTRODUCTION
Polyethylene pipes and fittings are light in weight and easy to handle compared to many other materials. They
have considerable resilience, flexibility and resistance to impact. However PE pipes and fittings can be scored by
sharp edges and can be distorted under load, particularly at higher temperatures. Therefore, in general, PE pipes
and fittings should not be dropped, indented, crushed or impacted and should not be subjected to rough handling
during loading and unloading operations.
GENERAL
Pipes and fittings must not be stored or transported adjacent to heat sources, such as engine exhausts, boilers,
naked flames or hot water or steam lines. While PE is very resistant to low temperature, as the temperatures drops
below 0°C the impact resistance will slowly reduce, and therefore more care should be taken to avoid damage by
impact.
Care should be taken in handling pipes and fittings in wet and frosty conditions as they may become slippery.
As with all pipe materials, contact with oils, petrol, solvents or chemicals that might have an adverse effect on
future performance should be avoided.
Typically, scores or scratches to a depth of more than 10% of the wall thickness should be avoided for
pressure applications.
Polyethylene is combustible, but there are no restrictions on the type of fire extinguisher which can be used.
Generally, only webbing slings should be used to lift PE pipes by crane. Vacuum lifting may be used, but chains,
wire ropes and hooks should be avoided.
In the storage and issuing of pipe and fittings the principle of “first in, first out” should preferably be observed.
Appropriate personnel exclusion zones should apply when lifting PE pipes in order to avoid injury if the pipe slips.
Straight pipe lengths stacked for storage or transport should be continuously and evenly supported to
minimise distortion.
Pipes with end treatments such as belling, forming, flanging or pre-assembled fittings should be stacked so that
the ends are free from loading; if necessary they should be protected from damage. Pipes cut and squared for
butt fusion should be given special attention to ensure that they are always handled, particularly in transit, in a
manner that keeps the pipe ends free from damage.
If different SDR’s of pipe are kept in the same stacks then the lowest SDR (thickest wall) should always be at the
bottom. Pipes may be nested inside each other for transport or storage provided distortion does not occur. When
being transported, pipes should not be restrained in a manner likely to result in damage to them.

LIFTING, HANDLING, STORAGE AND TRANSPORT OF COILS
Larger diameter coiled polyethylene pipes, for example those of diameters equal to or greater than 63mm can be
very heavy and pose particular handling and storage risks. The consequences of coils falling or slipping should
always be considered as serious injury can occur. This is particularly the case for coils stored in a vertical or near
vertical position. For unloading heavier coils, delivery sites should be equippedwith cranes or forklifts or crane-
trucks should be used
When lifting coils, slings must be placed around the entire coil. If coils are lifted by a fork truck, contact points
must be protected and the lifting must be performed on the entire coil. Fork tines should not be inserted between
windings in a coil.
Coiled pipe can be stored and transported by being laid flat on a continuous surface such as pallets but stored
only to such a height that the bottom convolutions do not become distorted. Pipe coils can also be stored and
transported in a near vertical position. Care must be exercised to ensure the support against which the coils are
leant are strong enough to withstand the load. Care should also be taken to ensure the external loops of the
vertically supported coil are not damaged or flattened in transport.
When releasing coils and uncoiling PE pipe, it must be remembered that the coil is under tension and
must be released in a controlled manner. The end of the coil should be restrained at all times, then the straps
released steadily, one at a time. If the coil has bands at different layers of the coil, then they should be released
sequentially starting from the outer layers. The amount of energy locked up in the coil will depend on the size of
pipe, the class of the pipe, and the size of the coil. The amount of energy can be substantial and cause significant
injury or damage if released in an uncontrolled manner. The person releasing the restraining straps should stand
at a safe position at the side of the coil.

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE - POLYETHYLENE
The below table indicates the chemical resistance of PE to various media at a number of temperatures.
• the medium
• temperature
• flow volume
The elastomer resistance list is intended as an aid for determining the suitability of a given seal. The indicated
values refer to the volume of swelling for the rubber compound, which is only one of the indications for
determining resistance. Chemical damage to the polymer chain can also lead to changes in mechanical
properties such as tensile strength, elasticity at break, etc. The most commonly indicated values are measured
at a temperature of 20°C. A longer exposure to a higher temperature can create more aggressive conditions that
reduce the life-span of elastomers.
+ Resistant: based on performed tests, PE is in general a suitable material for this application
/ Limited resistance: further research required
_
Non-resistant
Empty field = The material has not been tested on this medium at this temperature.
1. Little of no effect: volume change <10%, the elastomer can display slight swelling and/or loss of physical
characteristics under heavy conditions.
2. Possible change of physical qualities: volume change of 10-20%, the elastomer can display swelling and a
change of physical characteristics, may be suitable for structural applications.
3. Substantial change in physical characteristics: the elastomer displays a substantial change in volume and
physical qualities.
Empty field = The elastomer has not been tested on this medium.

PE = polyethylene
FPM = fluorocarbon

APPLICATIONS
SUBDIVISION STORM WATER MANAGEMENT
Enviropipes manufactures storm water pipe systems (EnviroStorm®) in diameters from 100mm up to 4000mm
which provide outstanding storm water management capacity as well as out performing other storm water
systems. High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes collect storm water runoff through a surface inlet and drain it
to an appropriate outlet. Storm water systems can be small and simple, such as that used for a modest housing
development, to complex systems used in metropolitan areas serving a combination of residential, commercial,
and industrial developments.
SUB DRAINS
A sub-drain system is an underground network of piping used to remove water from areas that collect or retain
surface water or groundwater. The network can be small, such as those used to drain a limited area, or large
draining a sizable number of acres.
Surface water can be collected into the sub-drain system by installing a surface inlet or catch basin. Groundwater
is collected by allowing water into the pipe through perforations. Both surface water and groundwater can be
discharged to an appropriate outlet.

ADVANTAGES
PIPE WEIGHT
The extremely low weight of EnviroStorm® and EnviroSewer® pipes allows simpler and faster installation. Most cases no heavy
machinery is necessary for the installation and handling of the pipes. Most of the handling can be done by an excavator on
site or even by hand.

ADVANTAGES
LONG LIFE
HDPE (PE100) pipes have proven reliability across a range of applications of around 50 years. The Water Services
Association of Australia (WSAA) Polyethylene Pipeline Code predicts a life in excess of 100 years before major
rehabilitation is required.
INSTALLATION
The installation time is shorter than other materials as the standard pipe lengths are between 5.5 to 6 meters
long. Fewer lifts mean unloading and loading the pipes into position saves even more time. Longer lengths can be
shop fabricated on request.
EFFECTIVE ROUGHNESS
Due to its low roughness as shown in the graph below there is almost no accumulation on the pipe bottom,
EnviroStorm® and EnviroSewer® pipes have the ability to self purify. Low roughness has an important economic
advantage as maintenance expenditure is kept to a minimum. Due to the low roughness the hydraulic properties
are improved and smaller diameters are required compared to conventional pipe materials with the same flow
rate. EnviroStorm® and EnviroSewer® pipes convey flows up to 17% greater than concrete pipes, and up to
60% greater than corrugated steel pipes.

UV-RESISTANCE
Commonly most natural materials and other plastics are degraded by weathering effects, particularly by the
combined impact of short-wave ultraviolet radiation in sunlight and atmospheric oxygen.
Black polyethylene pipes are permanently resistant to atmospheric corrosion and UV radiation, as the polyethylene
used contains carbon black which acts as both a pigment and an ultra violet stabiliser. Thus the pipes can be used
and stored outside without the pipe material being damaged.
RESISTANCE TO MICRO-ORGANISMS
Polyethylene is not nutrient media for bacteria, fungi and spores, so that the material is resistant to all forms of
microbial attack as well as both sulphurous acid and sulphates.

JOINTING
The following step by step procedure is recommended when joining
corrugated pipes.
STEP 1
Clean both the pipe socket and
spigot, making sure they are free
from any debris.
STEP 2
Apply the rubber ring by stretching it over the
spigot so that it rests between the first and
second corrugations.
STEP 3
Ensure that the rubber ring is fitted by
running your fingers around it.
STEP 4
Apply joining lubricant.
STEP 5
Apply an even joining force until the spigot
end comes into contact with the inner wall of
the socket (A timber glut and crowbar may be
used if circumstances permit).

STORMWATER
RETENTION SYSTEMS
RETENTION SYSTEMS
STORMWATER
Enviropipes has designed a stormwater retention system that is both practical and efficient, we know that
storage capacities differ from project to project so we have developed a modular system that can be utilised in
small housing to large commercial developments. Unlike other options including storm water wetlands and large
detention ponds, which require relatively large land areas, Enviropipes underground retention systems allows you
to utilise the land below making this a better option in areas where land costs are high and where availability of
land is a problem.
Enviropipes retention system captures and stores run off in large polyethylene corrugated pipes (EnviroStorm®).
Stormwater enters the system through a riser pipe (EnviroManhole®) connected to a catch basin, gutters or curb
inlets and flows into a series of chambers for storage. Captured run off is retained and can be pumped back onto
the surface for use in gardens or other applications. These systems can also be designed in-filtrate stored run off
into the surrounding soil, to help recharge ground water.

JOINTING
RUBBER RING JOINT
EnviroGravity® pipes consist of an integrated
socket and spigot. The spigot end is designed
to accommodate the rubber seal, which, when
assembled forms a water-tight joint from radial
compression of the rubber seal between the spigot
and the socket ends. Rubber ring joint pipes are
manufactured in sizes 1050mm up to 2000mm and
each pipe is supplied with a set of ethylene propylene
diene monomer (EPDM) rubber seals and lubricant.

Electro-fusion joint pipes are manufactured in sizes
1050mm up to 4000mm. After the pipes have been
manufactured each pipe is prepared for electro-fusion
welding and wrapped in a protective cover for fusion
welding later on-site. Enviropipes supplies electro-
fusion machines and tooling suitable for welding these
pipes together. With this method the whole pipeline
becomes a homogenous system and absolutely safe
against unwanted in/ex-filtrations. Using this jointing
technique makes it possible to install large diameter
pipes in short periods of time.

SUB SOIL
Sub-soil drainage systems use a flexible corrugated drainage pipe to maintain a designated water table level
based on design requirements. It is ideal for landscape and lawn drainage, and for drainage in areas that are
prone to flooding. It can also be utilised in the following applications;
• Roads and highways
• Sand and heap leaching for mines
• Sporting ovals
• Golf courses
• Parks and gardens
• Salinity
• High rainfall
In situations where there is fine sand and coarse silt soils, a filter sock is used to prevent fine grains from
entering the slotted pipe. It also restricts the sediment from entering the drain line by stabilising the soil
around the pipe corrugations.
Enviropipes slotted and slotted perforated pipe are manufactured in accordance with AS2439.
INFILTRATION
Change in groundwater recharge is one of the many effects of urbanisation. As urban development increases,
ground water recharge will decrease due to reduced infiltration. More surface runoff, less water infiltration
into the soil, and less water recharge to aquifers are often a consequence. Enviropipes has developed a flexible
corrugated pipe that can recharge and prevent ground water issues.

ADVANTAGES
Enviropipes Perforated pipe is designed for the economic removal of excess ground water in pastures, croplands,
orchards, playing fields, roads and construction work. It can also be used in effluent soakage fields, retaining wall
drainage and storm water diversion.
PIPE WEIGHT
The extremely low weight of EnviroStorm® pipes allows simpler and faster installation. Most cases no heavy
machinery is necessary for the installation and handling of the pipes. Most of the handling can be done by an
excavator on site or even by hand.

Combining outstanding durability, corrosion resistance and better value, HDPE (PE100) tank and silo systems are
an ideal tailor-made solution for hazardous liquid storage.
Contact us and let us know your specific requirements. Using our computer-aided design resources we will
develop, design and calculate the most cost-efficient solution. We also manufacture to client specifications
and drawings.
Enviropipes tanks and silos are designed to European standards DVS 2205 and EN12573.
ENVIROMANHOLES®
In order to control and maintain pipe systems regularly,
manholes are integrated into the system. These are mainly
installed at the positions of bends, reduction or branches.
The manholes are made from the same material as the
pipes and are also connected to the system with similar
jointing techniques. The advantage is a homogenous
system of the same material is produced.
ENVIROPROCESSTANKS®
Enviropipes can manufacture a wide range of tanks
and silos to client specifications and drawings using
