Introduction and Statement of Purpose

Throughout my ISM journey, I knew that I wanted to create something in order to help
children during their OT sessions while creating a fun experience. I wanted to focus on creating
something that would help the patients as well as the Occupational therapists in the clinic. With
the guidance of Mrs. Hocson and the other very talented Occupational Therapist’s in the clinic, I
have decided to create a interactive board game that will include the various types of exercises
that the patients practice during their sessions. This board game will also include a youtube
channel with videos demonstrating each exercise. The purpose of the board game is to create a
more entertaining and motivating way of doing their necessary drills. The reason why I chose to
have videos along with the board game is mostly because many of the children don’t understand
how to mimic certain types of exercises and need guidance. The videos would be a entertaining
and motivating way of demonstrating how to execute those movements. By combining the
common most used movements that the patients are to complete, along with the videos, it will
truly help the children. For the board, I will incorporate images of the exercices onto the square
board piece in a eye-capturing, structured and creative way. The board will be the main focus of
the product due to the fact that whichever exercise the dice lands on, the patient will then have to
complete that specific exercise while being guided with the video. This product will encompass
all of the main processing issues that most patients have such as the gross motor development
and the sensory processing. Most of the exercise overlap into many of the categories however, I
will be researching which section they best fit in. Throughout this product creating process, I will
be deciding which exercises would be the best to incorporate, how effectively it would be for the
majority of each type of disability and creating the youtube videos with Mrs. Hocson and the
other very seasoned professionals in the clinic.
The reason as to why I chose to invent both the board game and video was mainly
because I wanted to make something that will truly help those involved in Occupational Therapy.
Ultimately, I hope to be able to showcase my knowledge of the various disabilities that I have
observed, the traits that I have gained through this mentorship, and the abundant research I have
conducted. On the ISM Final presentation night, I hope others are able to see how much of a
passion I have for OT and all that I have acquired through this ISM experience.
Review of Skills and Research

Over the 3 months that I have had my mentorship with Mrs.Hocson, I have gained further
knowledge of the different types of disabilities, the different tools and techniques that the
Occupational Therapists use during the sessions. I am now aware of how to session goes from
start to finish. Every child comes in and does the common stretches and exercises then, is to do
their steps according to their goals that they plan to accomplish during that session. Afterwards,
they are rewarded with free time, whether that be a game, activity or certain swing in the room. I
am fortunate to be trusted by Mrs.Hocson and by her letting me have interactions with the
children. Rather than just sitting in the corner the whole three and half hours that I am there, I’m
able to help the children with certain exercises and motivate them. I have experienced what it’s
like to be apart of the session and learn new terms that they commonly use in the clinic, how to
have a positive and motivating attitude through the entire session, and the importance how truly
knowing how to care for each individual child in a way that is best for them. There are various
ways to determine how to do all of this but, I have had Mrs.Hocson and the other experienced
Occupational Therapists in the clinic to teach me and guide me throughout the process.
I have had extreme interest in the science behind each task that the patients are to
complete. There an immense about of science behind Occupational Therapy. The types of
science that I have learned is the gross motor development, sensory processing and visual
processing. The gross motor development includes muscle tone, range of motion, postural
control, and motor skills. Many of the exercises focus on the gross motor skills due to the fact
that these skills have a lot to do with the movements of the body. These types of developments
will be my main focus when creating the final product. The Sensory Processing includes the
different types of processing through the five senses, the vestibular processing and the
multi-sensory processing. These types of processing won’t be as important when I am creating
my product however, there are still a few types that I will be able to incorporate in the product.
The overall information and experiences that I have obtained has truly helped me gain a better
understanding of pediatric occupational therapy.
Methodology

1. For the board game, I will have to determine what exercises will be the best in order to
incorporate. This process will take a lot of consideration since most disabilities require
different types of exercise however, I will chose the ones that best fit the majority of the
disabilities.
2. When I have decided on the exercise, I will start to design the board on the website that I
have chosen to use.
3. Before I order the board game, I will present to Mrs.Hocson in order to ensure that I have
incorporated the necessary items.
4. After confirming the structure with Mrs.Hocson, I will order the board game with the
correct dimensions and diagrams of the various exercises. It will be very important to
order the product in time. I will want to be prepared early and ensure that there will be
time for any adjustments, if necessary.
5. Create a name/title for the board game.
6. After the board game is completed, it will be time to start brainstorming for the videos. I
will need to start thinking of the correct music and rhythm that I will add with each
exercise.
7. When I have come up with a plan for the videos, it will be time to give Mrs. Hocson and
the other occupational therapists my ideas and in which I will be open for any critiques
and adjustments that might be needed.
8. Once we have completed discussing the steps for the videos, we will then begin to
rehearse and record each video.
9. Edit each exercise video with correct background music, ensuring that the exercies and
music is in sync.
10. If there are any mistakes or certain videos that did not go as planned, then we will need to
do retakes of the videos.
11. After editing the videos and once the board game has been sent, it will be time to practice
the board game and watching the videos.
12. I will want to introduce this activity to the patients in Mrs.Hocson’s clinic, ensuring that
the product will be successful in her clinic.
13. If everything has gone according to plan, it will be done and ready to present during my
ISM Final Presentation Night.
Materials

Materials include:

1. Images and diagrams of the proper exercises that will be demonstrated in this product.

2. A customized board game with the correct dimensions and images printed onto it.

3. A box to store the board game in.

4. A laptop and nice video camera to use in order to record the videos.

5. Any accessories and costumes (if needed) for the OT’s and I to use in the videos.

Conclusions
Although this final product consists of two parts, I will perform my best by completing each task
within a reasonable and expected time. I believe that I will give it my all and be able how big my
passion for pediatric occupational therapy is through this creation. I hope to design this product
that will truly give the patients a fun tool that will help them overcome their obstacles. I fully
expect this product to have an impact on the children and make them see their exercises in a
more exciting and entertaining way.
In the field of pediatric occupational therapy, you are to expected to be a positive,
motivating and creative therapist. I expect that through this product making process, I will be
able to demonstrate those type of characteristics that I will need to be able to express in the
future. This product making process will truly be a growing moment for me and will allow me to
connect even more with Mrs.Hocson, the other exceptional occupational therapists in the clinic
and with the patients as well. I will be able to showcase my determination to complete difficult
tasks, my passion for pursuing pediatric occupational therapy and all of my research and hard
work that I have done in my first and final year of the ISM program. I hope to help those in
Mrs.Hocson’s clinic and showcase my product at the ISM Final Presentation night.
