Course Description
Current Korean Media II aims to develop a deeper understanding of the contemporary Korean
society through critical analysis of language use and viewpoints expressed in various types of
media including the internet, TV, films and newspapers. This course will provide students with a
rich opportunity to relate what they have learned in previous Korean language courses to the larger
context of Korean culture and society. The course is conducted entirely in Korean and utilizes both
written and audiovisual materials to develop students’ reading/listening comprehension, cross-
cultural understanding, and critical thinking. The course also involves in-depth class discussion and
writing short compositions to enhance conversation and writing skills. Upon completion of the
course, students will be able to reach Advanced Mid/High Level (according to ACTFL’s proficiency
guidelines) by:
• understanding, describing and discussing current events in Korea,
• comparing cultural values and social trends between the past and current Korean society
from an analytical and critical viewpoint, and
• producing well-structured oral and written discourse with advanced-level grammar
structures, vocabulary and expressions.

Registration
Registration for language classes will remain open until Friday, January 19, 2018. After this date,
students will no longer be able to enroll in KORN 332. The last day to drop a course with no
financial obligation and no notation on transcript is Friday, February 16, 2018.

Course Policies
1. All classroom activities are conducted in Korean, and all written course work must be completed
in Korean.
2. Students are expected to attend every class and arrive on time. Poor attendance, frequent
tardiness, and early departure will affect your grade. More than four absences will result in a
failing grade. If you miss more than two classes, your final grade will be lowered by one grade
sign (e.g., A- à B+). For each subsequent absence, your final grade will be lowered an additional
sign. Three late arrivals equal one absence. There is no excused absence.
3. Laptops, tablet computers and cellular phones are allowed only for class activities. The use of
these devices without the instructor’s permission will negatively affect your participation grade.
4. Students must complete all assignments before class to participate fully in classroom activities. A
late assignment will be accepted with a 20 % deduction for one-day delay. No assignment will be
accepted/graded two days after the due date.

Code of Academic Integrity
The Korean Language Program fully supports and adheres to all university policies and procedures
regarding academic integrity (cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, etc.). The work you submit in this
class is expected to be your own. If you submit work that has been copied without attribution from
any published or unpublished source including the Internet, work that has been prepared by
someone other than you, or work that in any way attributes somebody else’s work as your own
(e.g., translation without proper attribution), you may face discipline by the university’s Office of
Student Conduct.
