Course Description
Korean 012 is the second semester of elementary-level Korean that emphasizes the further
development of basic language skills. Upon completion of the course, students are expected to obtain
the Novice Mid level of proficiency based on the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign
Languages) proficiency scale.

Course Objectives
¤ Interpersonal Communication:
n Handle simple, elementary needs such as making a phone call, ordering food in a
restaurant, shopping, using public transportations and talking about one’s family
members and college life
n Use honorific expressions that are appropriate in a given context
n Exchange information using sentences in all three major tenses (present, past, and
future)
n Make requests, suggestions, and negative commands
¤ Interpretive Communication:
n Comprehend short, learned texts and utterances on basic personal information and
one’s immediate needs
n Comprehend short, learned texts and utterances on topics that are covered in class
and thus familiar to students
n Understand linguistic differences between one’s native language and Korean
¤ Presentational Communication:
n Produce simple sentences on topics related to one’s personal life and experiences
using learned vocabulary and structures
n Provide simple, short oral presentations on covered topics
n Write a letter
¤ Culture:
n Birthday celebration, transportation, clothing, food, hobbies
n Politeness system (honorifics and address terms)

Registration for language classes will remain open until January 19, 2018 (Friday). After this date,
students will no longer be able to enroll in KORN 012. The last day to drop is February 16, 2018
(Friday). If you miss class during this period, it will be considered as absence according to
school policy.

Course Policies
1. Attendance and Participation (10%):
• Attendance
o You are expected to attend every class, arrive on time, and stay to the end of each class. You
may not leave the classroom during class without the instructor’s permission.
o A maximum of two absences are allowed to accommodate to emergencies and illness.
Please notify the instructor of your absence in advance. Canvas’s Roll Call Attendance Tool
will show your current attendance rate, and excused absences will not be counted in the
attendance grade. Frequent lateness and early departure will also negatively affect your
grade. In addition, you are responsible for all materials and work covered on the day that
you were absent.
o In order to receive a passing grade, you must not have more than 4 absences. For further
information regarding attendance, consult the official College webpage on Policies
Governing Class Attendance (http://www.college.upenn.edu/policies/attendance.php).
o If you have to miss more than two classes due to serious sickness, religious holidays, job
interviews, family emergencies, or official university sports team activities, consult with
your instructor. You may need to submit an official document to prove your circumstances.
o If you miss more than five classes, you need to immediately seek assistance from your
academic advisor and discuss the academic consequences of those absences.
• Participation
o In language courses, daily preparation and active participation are crucial to your success
in class. Thus, your participation grade is based on your preparation for and active
engagement in class activities and discussions as well as use of Korean.
o Laptops and cellular phones must be turned off during class. The use of these devices will
negatively affect your participation grade.

2. Homework (20%)
o You should do homework before class to fully participate in classroom activities. Late
homework will be accepted with a 20% deduction for a one-day delay and a 40%
deduction for a two-day delay.
o Workbook Assignments: Students must complete the assigned tasks in the workbook as
announced on Canvas. All the workbook exercises must be completed and turned in to the
instructor before class begins on the due date.
o No late homework will be accepted three days after the due date. A late penalty will be
applied from January 22, 2018 (Monday). Keep all course materials including homework
and tests to claim any missing credit.

3. Vocabulary and Lesson Quizzes (30%)
• Vocabulary Quizzes (5 points, 10%): Vocabulary quizzes will cover new expressions and
vocabulary items for the given chapter noted in class. You may drop one lowest score.
• Lesson Quizzes (25 points, 20%): Weekly Tests typically encompass all the materials covered
in the assigned chapters, such as vocabulary, grammar, listening, reading, and writing. You
may drop one lowest score.
• If you miss a lesson quiz or a vocabulary quiz, you will receive a 0. If you miss a test under
special circumstances, you must provide official documentation to take a make-up test. A
deduction of 10% will be applied if the exception is accepted. If you have missed a lesson quiz
or vocabulary quiz, you will need to drop that quiz grade.

4. Oral Performances (15%)
• Individual Presentation (5%): You will create and deliver a 2-3 minute video on a topic of
your interest using PowerPoint or iMovie.
• Group Presentation (5%): You will work with your group members and present a skit either
in a live performance in class or a video-recording.
• Oral Interview (5%): The oral interview will be conducted as a one-on-one interview and
role-plays.

5. Midterm and Final Exams (25%)
• Midterm Exam (10%): The Midterm Exam (written) will cover all the material learned from
Lesson 9 through Lesson 12.
• Final Exam (15%): The Final Exam (written) is cumulative and will cover all the content
covered in class.
• Midterm and Final Written Exams cover vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, and writing.

regarding academic integrity (cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, etc.). The work you submit in this class
is expected to be your own. If you submit work that has been copied without attribution from any
published or unpublished source including the Internet, work that has been prepared by someone
other than you, or work that in any way attributes somebody else’s work as your own (e.g., translation
without proper attribution), you may face discipline by the university’s Office of Student Conduct. For

Office Hours
Students are strongly recommended to practice language regularly with the instructor during office
hours or through on-line communication tools such as Skype.

Travel and Study Abroad
Students are encouraged to study abroad in one of the numerous programs sponsored by the Office of
International Programs. The experience of living and studying in a foreign country can greatly enrich
functional language skills, while broadening cross-cultural understanding. Contact the Office of

There are several support services on campus for students who may need assistance with language
learning or learning and time management in general. These include:
• Language Direct: “A unique peer tutoring program for foreign language learners at Penn.
Language Direct consists of a network of peer tutors, supervised by graduate students, who
assist foreign language learners through drop-in tutoring and online help. Tutoring is
