only out there but back there, forgotten along the waysides of
time.
The waysides of time? These, for the word enthusiast, are
the musty pages of stout unabridged dictionaries. Most of us
own at best a smaller, referral-friendly college-size dictionary,
and probably more of us still just a paperback one that is a
mere fistful. Alas, such standard, common-parlance glossaries
can't give you even an inkling of how much verbal talus lies,
forgotten and unused, beneath the ever-changing cliffs of our
growing language.
Over the past ten years (in the course o( writing other
word books), I've ventured through much of this lexical
terrain. I haven't merely consulted those thicker dictionaries.
I'vegone through them page by page from A to Z (more than
once). Many words I've happened upon have amazed me
the kinds that bring a smile to the face. So there was — is

the word for the sort of cavalry trumpet charge one hears
played as a rallying cry at major league baseball games, you'll
find just the word — it's tucket — in the Reverse Glossary at
both "cavalry trumpet flourish or signal" and "trumpet flour-
ish or signal."
