READING COMPREHENSION AND USE OF LANGUAGE

What makes a great teacher?

Pupils share their views

Lindani: It helps when the teachers are pleased because your

work is good. That makes us want to work harder and do even
better. Mrs Powell is a fantastic geography teacher. She’s a bit
mad! She sometimes takes off her shoes and dances around
the classroom as well. Her lessons are great and we learn a lot.

Anne: Teachers’ ability to show they care about students is important. My English teacher reads with
a very good expression and makes it realistic. Every time we read a book she gets us to act it out in
groups. That helps us to understand it.

Michelle: I like teachers who care about their students and notice when things are not going well. I was
bullied at primary school because I was small for my age and I cried easily, but now teachers look out
for me.

Niamh: My school is a strict school, but my teachers are very friendly. We can’t bring in mobile phones
or tablets, even in our bags. It was strange at first, being without my phone all day, but now I really like
it. When you go into town with your friends you’re checking your phone and seeing what people are
posting all the time. In school you can be with your friends and actually talk to them!

Ben: I think it is very important when teachers put in a lot of time and effort on the clubs to give us
extra help. I enjoy going to the drama club because it boosts my confidence. The teachers are very
enthusiastic.

Thomas: I am thinking about becoming a teacher – either of geography or design and technology.
Teachers here motivate students to work harder and that’s what I call a good teacher – someone who
helps you to do well in exams, so you can have a good career and a good life.
