Course Description University Physics II is the second of a two-semester sequence of physics topics chosen as
an introduction to this science. This is a calculus-based physics course. The principal subject
of this course is electricity and magnetism. The topics covered will be electric fields, electric
potential, magnetic fields and forces, electrical circuits, Maxwell’s equations, and
electromagnetic radiation. Electricity and magnetism are the basis for much of engineering
and applied science. We will cover, at a minimum, chapters 13-23 of the textbook.
General Studies University Physics II is designated as a General Studies course. The General Studies
curriculum at the University of West Florida is designed to provide a cohesive program of
study that promotes the development of a broadly educated person and provides the
knowledge and skills needed to succeed in university studies. This course has been
approved as meeting the requirement in Natural Sciences. The General Studies learning
outcomes for this course are Problem Solving and Quantitative Reasoning.
If you are interested in majoring in physics or astronomy you should contact the Physics
Department at 850-474-2267 or physics@uwf.edu. If you are undecided about your major

Course Expectations University Physics II utilizes active learning techniques in the classroom. To succeed in this
class, you will be expected to do the following:
 Complete the required reading and prepare for class
 Attend class, answer questions using your personal response system, and participate
in group discussions and problem solving
 Complete your homework on time (the earlier the better!)
Student Learning In accordance with the general educational mission, you are here to learn new analytical
Outcomes tools that will serve you well in a broad range of professions. The course will generate
interest for a deeper understanding of nature. Along the way of mastering the subject you
will learn how to use physics to analyze and solve many practical problems both analytically
and using computational methods. Specifically, a student who masters this subject will
have the following skills:
 The ability to utilize models of electric and magnetic fields, electric and magnetic
forces, electrical circuits, and electromagnetic radiation to describe the natural world.
 The ability to model reality in terms of abstract objects and physical laws.
 The ability to express these models verbally.
 The ability to express these models graphically.
 The ability to express these models mathematically.
 The ability to manage complexity in terms of distinct and simpler concepts.
Attendance This is a General Education course for which regular attendance and participation is
required. If you miss class or do not complete the attendance record or task, you are
absent. Only those absences that are defined in the University class attendance policy will
be considered excused absences. After the first week, attendance will be taken using your
Personal Response System (Clicker). If you do not bring your clicker, you be marked as
absent. Students with 2 or more unexcused absences will be reported to their academic
adviser. Students may receive at most 5 excused absences. All absences thereafter will be
unexcused.
Excused Absences As soon as possible, you should notify your instructor if you have an excused absence via
e-mail. In order for an absence to be excused, it must meet the criteria defined in the
University Class Attendance Policy and written verification may be necessary, e.g. a
Doctor’s note.
Information for Students In compliance with federal regulations, financial aid can only be disbursed to students
Receiving Financial Aid whose attendance has been confirmed by the Instructor of Record during the designated
period. Confirmed attendance is conducted by verifying classroom attendance. If a student
has been approved for financial aid, funds will not be released until the instructor confirms
attendance. To receive financial aid on the normal distribution timeline, attendance must
be confirmed within seven calendar days of the course start date. A student may review
confirmed attendance status by using the "My Classes" app in MyUWF. A student who
stops attending class for any reason will not automatically be withdrawn and will still be
responsible for any missed work. A student who stops attending class may be awarded a
grade of NF. This grade may affect financial aid eligibility or require repayment of funds
awarded.
Personal Response This class utilizes personal response systems (clickers) in order to actively assess the
System student learning in the classroom. During the lectures, multiple-choice questions will be
presented. You will answer these questions using the ‘clicker’. A grade will be given based
on participation only. If you are not in class to answer these questions, you cannot make
them up. You must register your clicker each semester through MyUWF in order to receive
credit.
Reading Assignments You are expected to read the assigned sections of your textbook and watch the lecture
videos before every class. The reading assignments and videos are in the course schedule
in the last page of this syllabus.
Reading Quizzes Brief quizzes based on the assigned reading will be given at the start of class and may
require the use of your clicker. Reading quizzes will be open note and closed book.
Online Homework Homework will be assigned on the Web Assign webpage and will be due the evening before
every class period. If you complete your online homework early by at least 12 hours, you
can earn extra credit for each problem completed ahead of time. Each part of a problem
has 10 allowed attempts, with a penalty incurred for attempts after the 5th. If you are
behind, you may request up to 2 weeks of extensions for a penalty.
Working Together and On the homework assignments, you are encouraged to work with your peers in order to
Online Resources better understand the material. However, copying of solutions from a classmate, online
resources, or the student solutions manual is considered cheating and a violation of the
Student Code of Conduct.
