CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Man is given 24 hours a day to be complete daily tasks and better themselves

yet, under certain circumstances, this time is not enough. Time is a resource that must

not be wasted. A lack of time points to different possible faults, such as poor time

management. Time management is the process of organizing and planning how to

divide time between specific activities. It comes in different strategies and forms,

depending on how a person prioritizes the given tasks.

Marpa (2014), affirmed that time management was conceptualized in terms of

setting goals and priorities in the use of mathematics and perceived control of time.

Time is the most valuable resource a student has while also being the most commonly

misused. Thus, what separates successful students from the rest is proper time

management. Laguador (2013) stated that the accomplishment of duties and

responsibilities within the boundaries of physical strengths and limitation of time would

be more effective if priorities had been set through appropriate planning. Successful

students set priorities for themselves based on their goals; they plan, work, and play

around these priorities. Time management is a skill vital to productivity and therefore, is

extremely useful even outside an academic setting.

Improper time management leads to an incomplete output or cramming. As

stated by Schimanke (2010), cramming can be sufficient for achieving good grades but

1
Muntinlupa Science High School
999 Buendia St., Tunasan, Muntinlupa City

it undermines the goal of learning for future tasks and challenges. Cramming has been

ingrained in the minds and habits of students all over the world and recently has been

even more evident. Various extracurricular and school activities provide students with

work that accumulates over time. Spady (1970) adds to this by stating that

extracurricular activities not only add to the students’ workload but it also negatively

affects the fulfillment of the student. Students at Muntinlupa Science High School worry

about projects, extracurricular activities, and the competitions held every month in

accordance to the schools yearly program. The capability of some students to not only

comply with this workload, but also excel within it piqued the curiosity of the

researchers.

The proponents of this research are the students of grade 11 Burbank of

Muntinlupa Science High School. The researchers finds this study significant because

this will help other students to manage their time as well as get techniques that is best

suitable for them.

Theoretical Framework

This research will focus on the theory of Hockey (2016). This theory states that

time management is actually personal management. Where you are going or what you

are trying to accomplish is more important than how fast you get there. Personal

management demands organizing and executing around priorities. With that knowledge

in hand it becomes an easy task to make smart choices when planning both the

schedule for the day, as well as the energy needed to complete the tasks.

2
Muntinlupa Science High School
999 Buendia St., Tunasan, Muntinlupa City

Another theory that applies here is the Pareto Principle by Joseph M. Juran

(1896) which states that for ents, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the

causes. The 80-20 rule could be applied everywhere where time plays a major role to

uplift productivity and the success of organizations. The key element of this theory is the

20% that matters the most. It is stated that the first 20% of work produces the net result.

Within the limited time, categorizing and managing work and activities for achieving

goals in life is needed. It is also seen in students where in if they conducted their work

within a span of time results to high rate of productivity.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the methods of Grade 10 honor students of

Muntinlupa Science High School in managing time.

1. How do the respondents plan their time management?

2. Why do students need to manage their time?

3. How do honor students manage their time?

Significance of the Study

The findings of the study will be significant and important to the following sectors:

Students. The findings of the study will serve as a guide to students. Students

can view the findings and choose among it what technique is best for them. The

techniques in the study will may help students manage their time properly.

Teachers. The study could empower teachers in varying their teaching

techniques and materials. Teachers may use the findings as a guide to their betterment

in classroom management.

School. This could help schools create an improved calendar of activities

centered for students by decreasing the number of extra-curricular activities every

month. The school can also encourage students to use time-management techniques

given in the findings.

4
Muntinlupa Science High School
999 Buendia St., Tunasan, Muntinlupa City

Family. As the first home, this could help them in parenting their children. It will

also help them to know how their child is managing their time. Scheduling of family

bonding dates would also be scheduled depending on the time-management being

used by the child of the family.

Future Researcher. This study could serve as a guide to them. The findings

can also help them to know further about time-management.

Scope and Delimitation

This study will focus on the grade 10 students of Muntinlupa Science High

School and to delimit the population, only the honor student will be the respondents of

the study. Its main purpose is to identify the common techniques used by students to

manage their time during the Academic year 2017-2018.

Definition of Terms

Honor Students. It refers to students who reach the minimum requirement grade

of 85 per subject and a general average minimum of 90.

Techniques. It refers to a way of carrying out a particular task, especially the

execution or performance of an artistic work or a scientific procedure.

5
Muntinlupa Science High School

According to Efil (1999), people who know how to use their time in the correct

place and at appropriate times know their priorities and make plans to realize them

accordingly. As for planning, this makes two contributions in arranging an individual’s

life. The first shows how to reach the desired point from where you are. The second

defines how to reach the desired point in the shortest time.

Durukan (2004), mentioned that effective time management in schools depends

on how well-planned as in all fields of life. Since it is impossible to bring back time,

teachers should organize their priorities based on schedule if they want to use and

manage their time efficiently.

Erkılıç (2005) stated that the purpose of time management in classrooms is to

use the class time effectively and fruitfully in order to achieve the goals of education.

According to Lakein (1973) time management means determining one’s needs,

setting goals to meet needs, and prioritizing and planning to meet goals.

7
Muntinlupa Science High School
999 Buendia St., Tunasan, Muntinlupa City

Eilam & Aharon (2003) mentioned that those who achieve and get higher grades

have more capability than average or low achievers to invest their efforts and abilities in

time management related self-regulatory processes, such as planning.

Local

According to Palabrica (Philippine Daily Inquirer) With everybody aligned to the

same time reference, it would no longer be an acceptable excuse to come late on

account of the wrong time indicated in the timepiece. According to some Filipino

sociologists, this tardiness habit is a carryover of the practice during the colonial times

of Spanish officials delaying their attendance in formal functions to show their

“ascendancy” over those who came earlier.

Laguador (2013) stated that accomplishment of duties and responsibilities within

the boundaries of physical strengths and limitation of time would be more effective if

priorities had been set through appropriate planning.

Tan (2016) mentioned that we can’t generalize that everybody is the productive

during the wee hours of the morning. However, only you can determine which time of

the day you are most productive. If you are most efficient during morning, then you

better do the most difficult tasks during that time. This way, you can easily tackle the

less difficult ones even when you’re not productive enough to work on it.

8
Muntinlupa Science High School
999 Buendia St., Tunasan, Muntinlupa City

(BusinessTips, 2017) suggested that to spend your time effectively, you should Commented [1]: ?

be able to select which tasks are the most important and allocate your precious time to

deal with them once you get to work. Each day, identify the two or three tasks that are

the most important to complete and do those first. As long as you can finish the most

significant ones, you can say that you have worked quite productively for the day.

Hanks (n.d.) mentioned that there are myriad ways to get things done, and certain

things work better for others. Don’t be hard on yourself if you still have trouble managing

your time. Take things one day at a time and you’ll eventually get better at them.

Mercanlioglu (2010), stated that the key to improving your skills in this area is

increasing your awareness of your attitudes, thinking and behaviors regarding how you

manage your time and workload. Do you manage it, or it manages you? Once you are

aware of what doesn’t work, you can take responsibility and make choices that will

support your efficiency and effectiveness.

Garamaleki et. al. (2013), posited that time management is clearly not

independent from the broad domains of personality; there is a theoretically plausible

model for the personality/time management interactions: Students high on trait

9
Muntinlupa Science High School

conscientiousness use more and better strategies for time management and therefore

achieve better grades.

Adeojo (2012), suggested that effective time management cannot be turned on

or off when convenient. It is a set of skills and behaviors that become a pervasive part

of one’s professional and personal life. When you manage your time, the minutes of

your life, and it falls in alignment with your purpose of your life, you have a fantastic

chain reaction. This alignment can enable you to accomplish your tasks more

effectively, to reach your goals more quickly, and to give you a greater sense of peace.

Khatib (2014), confirmed that there is an inverse and significant relationship

between time management and perceived stress and was affirmed by Keshavarz

(2001), suggesting that there is an inverse and significant relationship between time

management and perceived stress. One of the ways to prevent stress is time

management. Time management skills can help individuals to use their times more

effectively and efficiently, and do their jobs in accordance with a predetermined plan

Adamson (2004), affirmed that assessment to college students about time

management became success after students who took the manual scored significantly

higher in meeting deadlines and effective organizations than those who didn’t.

Marpa (2014), affirmed that time management was conceptualized in terms of

setting goals and priorities in the use of mathematics and perceived control of time.

Time is the most valuable resource a student has. It is also the most wasted resources.

Successful students set priorities for themselves based on their goals in life; they plan,

work and play around these priorities. Time management is one of those skills that may

help in any career beyond university.

Garcia, et. al (1981), stated efficiency goes a step beyond productivity in the

sense that it refers to the capacity of an organization to increase productivity to the

output-input ratio by virtue of the organization's managerial principles, skills, etc.

Rogame (2016) , mentioned that students have too many things to pass on the

same deadline so they tend to forget about it.. And the line up of the schedules, poor

scheduling makes them stress. So the students have that problem in managing time.

Prioritizes un-significant things more than the important things to do in school. Gets

distracted to anime, games and also social media. In short, they get distracted by

technology. Can’t manage time because of laziness and doesn’t know what to do.

procrastination, hassle, cramming, lack of motivation. Sleep is more of a priority than

school works because of stress and there are chores that needed to be done at the

same time with the projects.

Lemon (2007), stated that the idea of time management is drilled into most

students through their undergraduate years, but the focus on this skill seems to drop off

11
Muntinlupa Science High School
999 Buendia St., Tunasan, Muntinlupa City

in grad school. The irony is that most students need time management skills even more

when they are looking at working on a thesis or dissertation.

Marpa (2014) stated that time management was conceptualize in terms of setting

goals and priorities in the use of mathematics and perceived control of time. Time is the

most valuable resource a student has. It is also the most wasted resources.

Successful students set priorities for themselves based on their goals in life; they plan,

work and play around these priorities. Time management is one of those skills that may

help in any career beyond university.

Synthesis

Efil, Erkilic, Lakein, Laguador, Marpa, Hanks and Durukan all agreed on the

concept of time management as an effective way to accomplish goals and tasks on a

given time frame within an addition from Adeojo, Khatib, and Rogame that managing

time prevents stress and gives a great sense of peace.

It has also been stated by Aharon, Eilam, Garamaleki, and Adamson that time

management has a positive effect on the student’s performance that was agreed upon

by Lemon with his statement that time management is essential to students especially

for those working on their thesis and dissertations.

On the other hand, Tan argued that work can be done efficiently if the most

difficult ones are done when a person feels the most productive.

Methodology

Research Design

This study would use a semi-structured interview to assess the given information

by the interviewee. The interview uses a protocol to help guide the researcher through

the interview process. The interview will be recorded through an audio recorder. There

will be additional investigation so that the researchers can get and verify the exact

answer.

Respondents of the Study

The participants of the study are chosen through random sampling among the

honor students of Grade 10 from Muntinlupa Science High School Academic year 2017-

2018.

Sampling Technique

The researchers will conduct an interview for the participants. This study will use

a purposive random sampling strategy. Where participants will be selected from the

area of Muntinlupa Science High School. The expected number of respondents will be 5

13
Muntinlupa Science High School
999 Buendia St., Tunasan, Muntinlupa City

honor students. Tigno stated that n qualitative research, the size of the target population

is not as important as in quantitative research. The analysis would be done in nature

and the general statement that will come from the respondents will represent the whole

population.

Gathering Data Procedure

Permission Letter. The researchers would write a permission letter to be

handed down to the respondents. The permission letter would officially ask the

respondents their participation on the study under the circumstance that any personal

information of them would not be released in public.

Interview. The study would conduct a semi-structured interview. The

researchers will conduct an interview to 10 students composing of honors students from

grade 10 of Muntinlupa Science High School. The researcher will only choose student

to be participant who are available at that time and the interview is all about the time

management techniques used by the honor students of Muntinlupa Science High

School.

Data Analysis. The researchers will analyze the data by comparing the

collected data with data from previous studies. The similarities and differences between

the various techniques will be noted and analysed. The researchers will then provide

probable reasons why these techniques were similar or different. The data collected

14
Muntinlupa Science High School
999 Buendia St., Tunasan, Muntinlupa City

from the various participants will also be compared to each other. This will show the

most popular techniques on time management. The researchers will then find a

reasonable idea which explains the popularity of such technique.

Chapter 4

Results and Discussion

A. Results and Discussion

1. How do honor students plan their time management?

Honor students plan their time management in different ways. An interviewee told

that he plans his time management on his activities based on its importance. This

planning of time management is ranking down the things that are important to the least

important. The interviewee organized his tasks based on their importance from greatest

to least.

Another finding from the interview is that some honour students base their time

management on the deadline given. The first things the honour students would do are

the activities that have the nearest deadline or submission date. This interviewee used

the deadlines of each in arranging the tasks given.

Another is that honor students plan their time management based on the difficulty

of the activity. The hardest task would be first and the easiest for the interviewee would

be the last.

15
Muntinlupa Science High School
999 Buendia St., Tunasan, Muntinlupa City

2. Why do students need to manage their time?

Managing one’s time is important. Students need to manage their time in order to

finish the task they are assigned to do. The honor students told that in a Science High

School, there are many school works and homeworks often given in a single date that’s

why sometimes they forgot some of the things they need to do. The honor students also

told that time management is the key for making their time productive and to finish what

they are assigned to do.

Students also manage their time to divide it on the extra-curricular activities, their

families, and their selves. The interviewees stated that in a Science High School, it is

important to have time management because of the extra-curricular events and

activities that is occurring every month.

3. How do honor students manage their time?

Honor students manage their time by having a planner with them. Their planner

contains lists of different activities and schedules of each. This can help an individual

manage his time by making it easier to visualize what activities he should do and help

him know if he misses out something he should do. The interviewees told that the

planner is a tool that helps them visualize their schedule and manage their time.

16
Muntinlupa Science High School
999 Buendia St., Tunasan, Muntinlupa City

On the other hand, other honor students don’t use planners but they only think on

how to manage their time with their minds. They also organize the order of the things

they would do based on how they want it to be. Whether by difficulty, the date of

submission, or from the most important to the least important. It is stated that some of

the interviewees don’t prefer planners as their time management. These honor students

prefer no planners and just their minds. They use their minds to arrange the things they

will do in the activities

Summary of Findings, Conclusion and Recommendation

A. Summary of Findings

1.

Honor Students planned their time management based three things. The first is
based on the importance of the activity, where they do it from the most important to the
least. The second is based on the deadline given to finish the task, the honor students
will do the activity that has the nearest deadline. Lastly is the honor students based their
planning of time management on the difficulty of the activity to them.

2.

Students needs to manage their time to finish all the tasks they need to do.
Without time management, students won’t finish all the tasks they need to do. On the
other hand, time management is important to students so they can divide their time
between their extra-curricular activities, families, and their selves.

3.

Honor students manage their time by having a planner with them. This helps
them visualize the activities they need to do. The other honor students manage their
time by just arranging it in their own mind and being flexible in their schedules.

B. Conclusion

Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions are drawn:

1. Honor students have different ways of managing their time from each other.

2. Most honor students believe that time management is important to help them do all

their tasks in an orderly manner.

18
Muntinlupa Science High School
999 Buendia St., Tunasan, Muntinlupa City

3. Honor students always start doing the most difficult tasks as early as possible up to

the least difficult.

4. Honor students take into consideration their time with their families and self-

recreation.

5. Some honor students manage their time just by thinking of the sequence of their

tasks to be done.

C. Recommendation

Based on the conclusions of the study, the researchers recommend the

following:

1. To add more programs and study of other ways on how other students manage their

time.

2. The future researchers could increase the scope of the study where the data is not

only from the honor students.

3. Use different kinds of data gathering techniques that would help the study to be more

reliable.

4. The researchers may use different kind of data gathering like surveys.

19
Muntinlupa Science High School
999 Buendia St., Tunasan, Muntinlupa City

5. The future researchers may add some questions and specific problems to have a
more accurate answer.
