My friend texted me:

Do you know any Quranic verses off the top of your

head that teach non-violence or non-initiation of
force?

At the end of this article, I have included some resources from people who have
thought about this more than me.

I don’t believe the Quran forbids armed resistance. I don’t believe the Quran
commands only armed resistance. As in most things, a human/Muslim must strive to
understand his/her situation and determine which course of action best meets the
example set by the Messenger Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬, who lived out the teachings of the
Quran.

I don’t like to cherry-pick passages of the Quran and then claim that Muslims are
required to do this and avoid that. I think it is important to understand basic values
Allah ‫ ﷻ‬commands Muslims to uphold and interpret everything in light of those
values. Of course, many Muslims will end up disagreeing with my conclusions using
this methodology, so don’t take my opinions to be more than the opinions of one
person.

Qur’an translations are taken from the University of Southern California Center for
Muslim-Jewish Engagement web site. The first number refers to the sura (chapter),
and the second number refers to the aya (verse). Shakir, Pickthal and Yusufali are
popular English translations of the Quran featured at this site.

1. Allah ‫ ﷻ‬neither benefits from our worship nor suffers harm

from our disobedience. Our obedience is for our own benefit,
and our disobedience hurts ourselves.

2. We humans should not assume we are so important in the big
scheme of things. So what possible interest of ours is so
important that we can plant land mines which will destroy for
generations or use munitions which poison the earth and water,
or God ‫ ﷻ‬forbid, destroy an area with nuclear weapons?

SHAKIR: It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards the East and the
West, but righteousness is this that one should believe in Allah and the last day and
the angels and the Book and the prophets, and give away wealth out of love for Him
to the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and the beggars and
for (the emancipation of) the captives, and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate; and
the performers of their promise when they make a promise, and the patient in distress
and affliction and in time of conflicts-- these are they who are true (to themselves)
and these are they who guard (against evil).

identity of the transgressor and the victim.
