Observation Task 2: Teaching a Phonics Lesson

Focus: Identify the structure of a phonics lesson used by your MST and the supporting activities
used to reinforce the concepts taught

Objective: To encourage student teachers to identify and discuss the structure of a phonics
lesson, focusing on what the MST does, what the students do in response and the student-centered
activities used to support the students learning.

Procedure: Familiarize yourself with the Observation Table: Teaching a Phonics Lesson

Reflections on Observation Task 2: Teaching a Phonics Lesson

1. What program is used in your school to teach phonics? They use

online programs such as, ABCs website that teaches the
sounds through songs and games.

2. How is phonics taught in your school? They use mostly songs,

read stories and do activities that improves their knowledge

about the phonics. They practice the sound by tracing, use

the visual learning by showing them pictures and they can

find out the sound.

3. What was the focus of the lesson? To recognize the sound “K” and practice on
writing.

4. Were the learners engaged in the phonics lesson? If they were, select (a); if they were not,
select (b).

a. Describe the different types of active engagement activities that

the teacher used. MST uses songs to engage them. She does

activities that are hands on and she divide the activities

according to the student’s level so they can enhance their

knowledge of writing and learning the sounds such as,

she uses the plate of sand to writ the sound, create craft
according the sound and tracing sounds activity.

b. What could active engagement activities the teacher has used to help
learners b e t t e r understand the lesson?

5. What types of activities did the children participate in during their independent centers that reinforced
the lesson objective/learning outcome? If they participated in learning centers, select (a); if they
did not, select (b)
a) Describe the different types of learning center activities that the
students did.
- MST use the blocks activity in math area to let the

students create the sound by using the blocks. And, in

the reading area, she let the students read the stories

and identify words that have the sound that they

learned about.

b) Describe two (2) learning center activities that the teach er could
have used to help reinforce the learning outcome.
