Questions

1. Based on your observation in part 1, relate the nature of solute and the nature of solvent to
the relative solubility of solute in a solvent
Solubility of a solute in a solvent purely depends on the nature of both solute and solvent.
A polar solute dissolved in polar solvent.
Solubility of a non-polar solute in a solvent is large.
A polar solute has low solubility or insoluble in a non-polar solvent.
2. List down the solute in part 1 that are non-polar
Nacl and sucrose

4. What is the effect of particle size on the rate of dissolution of solute?

The smaller the particle the faster it dissolves. This is because the process by which a solute
dissolves takes place at the surface of the solvent. That means the larger the surface area of a
particle or solute, the slower the solute will dissolve.

5. Why does agitation affect the rate at which solute dissolves?

Stirring does not have an effect on solubility of a substance, but everyone knows that if he
puts sugar in his tea and does not stir, it will not dissolve. Actually, if we left the tea to stand for a
long enough time, the sugar would dissolve. Stirring only increases the speed of the process - it
increases move of the solvent what exposes solute to fresh portions of it, thus enabling solubility.
As molecules in liquid substances are in constant move, the process would take place anyway, but
it would take more time.

6. Why must carbonated beverages be stored in tightly sealed containers?

They must be sealed because the carbon dioxide is pressurized into the beverage, meaning
the inside of the container would then contain more pressure than the air surrounding it. So, if it
was opened, the carbon dioxide would be released as bubbles. While refrigerated, the cool air
surrounding the beverage has a lower solubility, so it cannot contain as much of a concentration
of carbon dioxide as hot air could.

7. Why does a warm bottle of carbonated beverage produce more bubbling than a cold bottle
when opened?
Among other things the solubility of gases in a liquid depends upon the temperature, lower
the temperature higher the solubility & higher the temperature than lower the solubility. The
reason for this gas solubility relationship with temperature is very similar to the reason that vapor
pressure increases with temperature. Increased temperature causes an increase in kinetic energy.
The higher kinetic energy causes more motion in molecules which break intermolecular bonds
and escape from solution.
