Praxis Core Exam Analysis

Exam Requirements

To be able to continue with my education further than an associate degree with an

emphasis on elementary education – I must pass the Praxis Core Exam. If I do not pass the exam

I will not be able to go to UNLV, NSC, or UNR to do my bachelor’s degree in Education. To

pass the Praxis Core Exam in Nevada in math; I will need a score of 150 or above. For writing, I

will need a score of 162 or above. For reading, I will need a score of 156 or above.

Exam Preparation

I read all the links provided in the syllabus for practice including videos from Khan

Academy specifically with math as it is my weakest subject. I read the manuals that explain what

will be given in the test from the website that gives the practice tests. I also talked to a few

people who have previously passed the Praxis exam and what to expect. Currently I am taking

math 96 so I believed that would help me study for the math section as well. However, I did not

do any practice questions to help for these tests. I did spend less time studying for the reading

and writing section compared to the math section.

Exam Results

For reading, I scored in the 50% range which means that I need significant improvement

to pass the reading section. In the basic diagnostic that breaks down my score; I need substantial

improvement needed in key ideas and details which was at 31%, I am borderline in craft,

structure, and langue skills which was at 66%, and I need improvement integration of knowledge
and ideas which was at 52%. I was very surprised at my results because I read at least five books

a month.

For writing, I scored in the range of 70% which means I am borderline to passing the

writing section. In the basic diagnostic that breaks down my score; I am borderline to passing in

language and research skills for writing at a 70%. However, in text types, purposes, and

production section of writing I need substantial improvement because I scored at 22%. My

writing score also surprised me as I have scored very high on all essays I have written during my

college education.

For math, I scored in the range of 72% which means I am borderline to passing the math

section. In the basic diagnostic I scored an 82% in number and quantity and an 81% in statistics

and probability; both were scored at likely to pass. I was borderline at algebra and functions at

70% and I was at a 36% in geometry which means I need substantial improvement in this area. I

thought I would have scored the worst in the math section.

Future Exam Preparation

The scores I got back from doing the practice tests for the Praxis Score exam shows me I

need much more study to pass so I can achieve my bachelor’s degree in education. To be able to

pass when I take the official Praxis exam I will be purchasing study books and an online program

such as the study guide offered by McGraw to help me prepare and pass in all three sections and

if possible even get a tutor. However, if I do not pass in one or more of the sections I will be

taking a review course at CSN as I need to pass the exam to become a qualified teacher.
