ASSIGNMENT 2 (STIFFNESS METHOD)

Lecturer: Assoc Prof Dr Jamaludin Bin Mohamad Yatim

Direction: Answer all questions. It is an individual assignment to submit before or on 12 May 2013.

Question 1

Figure 1 is a steel truss ABCDE carries the nodal forces 40 kN and 75 kN at A and 20 kN at D. The
truss is supported as pin at B and E and roller at C. The truss members are an equal angle according
to the table of properties, BS 5950. The truss system was designed such that all nodes may displace
no more than 2 mm and the axial stress in the members less than 125 N/mm2. Using the stiffness
method, suggest the most suitable size of the section for all members according to the design
requirements. Report the displacements at the nodes and the internal forces for all members.

Question 2

A reinforced concrete frame ABCD has been built to carry a uniformly distributed force of 96 kN/m
(gravity load), as shown in Figure 2. The frame is fixed at A, roller at C and pinned at D. The designer
has decided to employ a rectangular section, which 250 x 400 mm for beam BC and 250 x 250 mm
for both column AB and CD. It was reported that a downward settlement of 5 mm occurred at
support D due to the ground problem. Using the stiffness method, calculate the displacements for all
nodes and the internal forces and end moments for all members.
Check the current conditions of the frame based on load carrying capacity by assuming that the
concrete compressive strength is 35 N/mm2, modulus of elasticity of concrete of 32 kN/mm2, and
the stress in steel reinforcements are less than the design strength.
