OBJECTIVES OF CLINICAL EDUCATION - CT SIMULATOR

Through clinical assignments students will receive instruction in order to achieve the following objectives:

PATIENT CARE PRACTICES


1. Introduces self and other appropriate personnel to patients
2. Greets and assist correct patient
3. Respects patient’s right to privacy and confidentiality
4. Displays warmth and empathy toward patient

LEVEL OF PROFESSIONALISM
1. Reports to assigned area on time and is present for all simulations
2. Displays a professional behavior towards patients and staff.
3. Cooperates with staff when given suggestions and new ideas
4. Works as a member of the team
5. Carries out instructions promptly, asking questions for clarification
6. Accepts constructive criticism, guidance and direction with a positive attitude
7. Communicates effectively with patients and medical staff

MOTIVATION
1. Shows enthusiasm and initiative in performing assigned tasks.
2. Actively and voluntarily seeks further information from staff.
3. Offers assistance to staff and patients whenever needed

CONDUCT AND APPEARANCE


1. Discusses patient information out of hearing of inappropriate people
2. Questions setup activities out of sight and hearing of patients
3. Performs general activities in a calm and assured manner
4. Maintains professional appearance and hygiene

RADIATION SAFETY PRACTICES


1. Demonstrates adherence to radiation safety rules
2. Identifies location of emergency off switches
3. Monitors patient and control console during Simulation
PATIENT SIMULATION SKILLS

1. Describe CT simulation procedures to patient

2. Prepare the room in advance for patient use, gathering necessary equipment needed

3. Position patient on CT simulation table

4. Construct and utilize immobilization devices for patient

5. Localize area indicated in prescription

6. Operates couch movements efficiently while setting up patient

7. Set borders for slice imaging according to the physicians prescription.

8. Use appropriate contrast materials when indicated

9. Monitor patient for any contrast reactions.

10. Set preset protocols or adjust imaging parameters such as slice level or FOV to obtain adequate image.

11. Record all data accurately onto CT simulation sheet

12. Mark isocenter and transmit network images to work station

13. Review and discuss CT scan and treatment plan with the therapist and/or dosimetrist.

14. Distribute completed simulation materials to responsible parties

MANIPULATION AND CARE OF EQUIPMENT

1. Know how to energize and shut down CT simulation unit

2. Perform Quality Assurance checks on the CT simulator unit

3. Operate the couch movements efficiently while setting up patient
