Web Discussion 1 (VeriGuide Assignment #1)

Topic – Differentiating conscious and unconscious processing

In 50-100 words, answer the following question:

In Lectures 1 and 2, we discussed that consciousness can be approached scientifically by

two approaches: (A) observing when conscious experience happens vs. not and comparing

between them; (B) manipulating certain factors to create conscious and unconscious

conditions for further comparison. Some researchers suggest that the use of the binocular
rivalry to compare conscious and unconscious conditions (as discussed in Lecture 2) is a

combination of both approaches. Discuss why this could be the case.

All pieces have to be written in English. For each student only the first post will be marked, on

a scale from 0 to 10 (best). Only submission to both the course website and VeriGuide by the

deadline will be graded. In other words, all late submissions or submissions to only the course

website or only VeriGuide will obtain a zero grade.

You are advised to draft and edit your answer in word processing software and then paste it

here. Only the first post will be graded. If you are citing journal papers, attach the title, journal

name, issue number, and page number of the papers you cite at the end of your post (these

would not count towards the word limit). Quotations are not encouraged, but if you use them,
make sure you put quotation marks around the text involved and clearly state its source to

avoid the violation of academic honesty.

You are highly welcome to reply to other classmates' posts after you have posted yours, and

these posts will not be marked.

Scoring:

A (9-10 pts): Convincing to impeccable discussion on how the use of binocular rivalry could fit

the defining feature of both approaches.

B (7-8 pts): Clear discussion that may not be fully convincing.

C/D (5-6 pts): Discussion insufficient in clarity.

F (below 5 pts): Too vague, incomplete, or full of incorrect details.

Point adjustments:

 Failure to submit to both VeriGuide and the course forum by the deadline or different
submissions to the two (zero points)

 Over word limit [not counting references]
