Grade 5/6: Ted Harrison Art Project

Connection to the Program of Studies:


GLO: Students will create an original composition, object or space based on
supplied motivation.

SLO: Component 3 A. Artistic style affects the emotional impact of an artwork.


Component 4 F. Shapes can be distorted for special reasons

Objective: The students will examine the art style of Ted Harrison a English
Canadian Artist and emulate his style to create layered winter landscapes as
decoration for the Christmas concert.

Grade Level: 5/6

Lesson Length: 60 mins for the lesson

Introduction: -Introduce the art of Ted Harrison- Edward Hardy Harrison


was born August 28th, 1926 in the village of Wingate In County Durham,
England. He immigrated to Canada and settled in a small town in Yukon
near Whitehorse. His art is uses layers of colour to create landscapes and
emulate the northern lights, and gradients of colour in the skies.
-Show different examples of of Ted Harrison’s work, point out the different
features of the work. Introduce what we will be doing for this art project. {5
mins}

Body: - Set expectations of what must be included in the drawing: {5 mins}


- Layered sky, mountains and hills
-Attention to Background, mid ground and foreground. (Things
get bigger in the foreground and smaller in the background)
-Must contain a sun or moon
-Must contain at least winter animal. E.I. Polar bear, penguins,
reindeer, Canadian Geese flying, Seal, Arctic Fox.
-Winter elements such as snow, snowmen, inukshuk, sledding,
cabins
-Fill your page, must be landscape orientation.

Give demonstration of the pencil drawing which will be our guide when we
paint. Stress that the painting is abstract and simplistic. It is ok if things
aren’t super realistic. We want to create contrast through our colour but
also through our line work. “In my example the sky has many different
layers but the group was much more simple. {10 mins}

Have students put their name on the back of their papers, and begin
drawing their landscape. bring up references/draw reference animals if
needed. {30 mins}

Closure: Assign students clean up tasks such as gathering pencils,


erasers and any other supplies if we need it. Push in chairs. Line up and
head back to the class to get out our agendas. {10 mins}

Materials Notes
- 8 1/2 X 11 paper - Emphasize simplicity and abstraction.
- Pencil - Foreground, midground and background.
- Eraser - Many Layers in
- Acrylic paint
- Sharpie marker
