FOREWORD
This report contains a COMPREHENSIVE work of BRAINNETICS team
on project E-MODULE®. It contains the team’s methods, beginning with the
identification of the problem to the selection of the final design. It also
includes the processes and procedures used in arriving at the final decision
and the minutes of various meetings held.

DISCUSSED PROJECTS

• Smart Recycling Bin - A bin that sort and separate different materials into their
various bins.
• Engineering Drawing Module - A portable case which carries the drawing board
and it associated instruments.
• Smart Board - A board which self-project.
• Dual Mechanized Water pump – A water pump which operate on both solar and
grid electricity.

NAME OF PROJECT
 E-MODULE (ENGINEERING MODULE) ®

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Carrying of drawing instruments, drawing sheets and drawing board at a

goal by students is one of the hectic routine students face often. They find it

discomforting and boring when handling these materials. These drawing

materials are mishandled and sometimes get damaged as a result. This

further causes them drawing errors when drawing. Also, most students

cramp their drawing sheet in their bag. As a result, they become dirty and

crumpled while transporting them. They intend getting low marks than

expected.

OBJECTIVES
The team after research and investigation realized a need to make a case
which would safely keep drawing materials and make transporting of the
materials easy and comfortable. This unit we named “E-MODULE®” is the
ideal solution.

The next thing we did as a team was think of the requirements of the E-
MODULE® and the features that will upgrade its functionality and design
and make it preferable by all to the previously existing drawing board and it
associated instruments on the market.

PRODUCT DESIGN SPECIFICATION


Purpose
• The product should help students transport drawing equipment with ease.
• The product must protect the drawing equipment.

Aesthetics
• The unit must be hygienic.
 It should be neat.
 It must be free from sharp edges to avoid cuts and bruise.
• The unit must be robust.
 It should not break or deform when pressed on or struck with an object.
• The product should be fashionable.
 It should be in different colors.

Competition
• The case will be operating against equivalent models which include portfolio.

Customer
• The product will be mainly used by students.

• It should be suitable for other users with similar hitch.
• The height change characteristics of the shoulder strap allows users of different height
to easily position it to their suitable height.

Disposal
• Most components of the product should be recyclable and reusable.

Safety
• Sharp corners and edges should be avoided.
• The design of any hinges or zips must not allow fingers or part of the human body to
be trapped.
• The product must meet all the safety standards particularly with respect to toxicity and
no small parts could fall apart.

Ergonomics
• The weight of the product (after occupied with drawing board and instrument) should
be easy to carry over long distance.
• It should feature suitable carry handles and shoulder straps so that the user can hold it
comfortably.

Environment
Working Environment
• The product should be able to withstand all weather conditions without hindering the
equipment and materials (drawing sheet).
• It should be indoor and outdoor use.

Environmental Impact
• It should not require much resources when manufacturing.

Installation
• The unit should be easy to setup; mainly by the user.
• The product should not require any special operation.

Life in service
• The product should be expected to be obsolete in 30 years’ time.

• The surface of the product should be easy to be kept clean and neat.
 It should not require any special form of maintenance.
 The product should be maintained with a wrung cloth.

Market
• It should be readily available to students.
• The product should cost an average of eighty Ghana cedis.

Materials
• The material used should be non-toxic.
• The material should be durable and waterproof.
 It could be made from a highly durable padded woven fabric material.

 Durable plywood will be used to make the drawing board surface

Packaging
• It should be packaged in cartons to protect the surface from moisture, dirt and so on.

Patents
• There are no patents for existing products.

Performance
• The unit should carry all forms of instrument without troubles.
• It should readily available when required.

Quality and Reliability


• The product should be free from defects.
• The product should be of standard measure.

• A prototype of the product will be produced.

• The unit should have a maximum size of 690×530×60 mm.

Storage/Shelf life
• The product should have a shelf-life of 5 months when stored in a cool dry place.

Testing
• Testing is to be carried out on 5% of units.
• The product should protect the equipment from damaging when dropped from a
height within 4 feet.
• It waterproof capacity should be tested for maximum efficiency.

Timescales
• The timescales should be set at the outset to identify quickly any slippage in meeting
objectives.

Weight
• Its weight should relatively be the same as weight of the drawing board and its
instruments combined, i.e. about 1.2kg.

After the detailed consideration of the requirements of the E-MODULE® , we came together
as a group to generate ideas on designs of the product and after thorough evaluation, the
team generated five conceptual designs and then combined the advantageous features of the
all the concepts to decide on the final design

CONCEPTUAL DESIGNS
CONCEPT 1

This concept makes use of its own drawing board with a cover plate beneath the drawing
board. The cover plate supports the drawing board by hinge which can adjusted to any angle
of choice. The cover plate holds the instruments which can be enclosed and transported.

ADVANTAGES

1. Drawing can be done at any suitable angle.

CONCEPT 2

Concept two makes transporting a lot easy since it has the design of a backpack. It wide
surface area allows for more instruments and drawing sheet.

ADVANTAGES

1. The backpack design makes it easy and comfortable to transport.

CONCEPT 3

This concept is unique because it features both a shoulder strap and a handle. The shoulder
strap can adjust to any height of choice. It allows for all instruments and also a special side for
drawing sheet. It has tight locks and made of durable padded material.

ADVANTAGES

1. The shoulder strap and handle makes it easy to transport.


2. The paper compartment keeps the paper clean and neat.

CONCEPT 4

Concept 4 has a smooth surface for drawing and holds the instrument case within. It is
relatively lighter and features almost all the good specification

CONCEPT 5

This concept is unique with it drawer instrument compartment. This case can contain any
instrument and the T-square. It is really light and also features most of the specifications.

ADVANTAGES

1. It requires less strength to carry.


2. Design is attractive.

After coming up with these designs, we had a hard time choosing the final concept so the
team abducted the Basic Decision-Matrix method to help come up with the final design.

The Decision-matrix method is basically a table which analyze each concept and compare
concepts for best concept.

Concept 5 proved to be the best design out of the five. The advantages of the other
concepts were added to the third concept to improve its design and functionality.

FINAL DESIGN

The final design appears attractive and simple with most of the project objective achieved. It is
made with a durable wood and a highly durable light padded woven fabric material that makes
it light and comfortable to carry about. It features both adjustable shoulder strap and a handle
to make transporting flexible. It also features a compartment for the drawing sheet which
makes it possible to keep a clean and neat work. It also comes in different colors which makes
it fun and fashionable to carry about.

CONCLUSION
The E-MODULE is a helping hand product, which we believe, is the ideal solution to the hectic conditions of carrying and
transferring the drawing board and its instruments. We know it will further save students’ time and energy to help them
with their work and education as a whole.

Although our final design as it stands can be put to use by students, we recommend that more research and investigation
be carried out on our final design to enable it meet market standard.

APPENDIX A
MINUTES OF MEETINGS
WEDNESDAY, 27th January, 2016
VENUE: ENGINEERING AUDITORIUM
Members Absent: All members were present

This was the first ever meeting of the group so the agenda was for members to know each other. There was an
individual introduction of each member and an exchange of contact details.
ELECTION OF GROUP LEADER: Asemdi Solomon was elected as the group leader.
Emmanuel Ammeyawh suggested (brainnetics) as the team’s name. The team name was agreed upon by members
after about fifteen minutes of arguments.
The meeting was brought to an end with a prayer.
DATE OF NEXT MEETING: The next meeting was scheduled for 4th February, 2016

THURSDAY, 4TH FEBRUARY, 2016


VENUE: ENGINEERING AUDITORIUM
Members Absent: All members were present
Brainnetics met again to decide on its meeting days and venue.
Finally, the team settled on Friday’s and Saturday’s between the hours of 5-7 at the royal parade grounds .
The 12th of February 2016 was scheduled for the next meeting.

Team Brainnetics met again to discuss about problems in the society and on campus. Team members brought
ideas. There was the problem of carrying drawing boards to lecture halls, tables and chairs making noise in lecture
room, poster littering around and many others.

There was basically more analysis of the previous ideas after persons who pitched the ideas had to some extent
explained them in detail. We also had to work on the problems chosen and present our ideas to our mentors

Contrary to the previously set agenda for today which was to settle on an idea to develop, there was still pitching of
ideas. A pitched idea was followed by an almost immediate analysis on all counts, both for members to fully
understand the idea and also to check the idea’s plausibility.
Two more ideas were added on to the already existing ones.

SHORTLISTING OF IDEAS TO A FINAL FOUR
All ideas were checked for their feasibility in terms of necessity and simplicity in manufacturing and a chucking
out was done leaving the following ideas as highly possible projects;
1. Drawing case
2. Static Tables and chairs at lecture halls

The last idea was a last minute contribution by two of the members. The selected two were to be presented to our
Mentors as a form of progress report as to the selection of a project idea.

Very little work was done by the team members on their own owing to a large load of assignments from other
courses. The team finally decided on the drawing case

The team met again this day to show their conceptual designs to the other members. Only three members brought
their finished concepts that day so we had to adjourn the meeting and reschedule for another time.

We started the meeting with a prayer. By this day, every member had completed his or her conceptual design. We
debated on the designs to choose. After long minutes of discussions and arguments, we decided on six designs

The team couldn’t meet at the parade grounds due to heavy rains. We evaluated the conceptual designs and decided
on concept 5.Detailed drawings were produced. We read over the format of the Product Design Specification
(PDS) in order to prepare ours for the drawing case. We had to revise it before we finally contributed in order get it
printed out for submission.

Changes were made in the report and PowerPoint slides and the prototype of the final design was produced.

We met again to finalize everything for the submission day. We went through the slides to check that everything
was fine. We worked on the poster to be used for the presentation. After this, work was done to complete the
report.
