Structural Analysis and Design of a 2B+G+M+15 Office Building February 21, 2018

1. Introduction:
1.1. General Background:
A structure refers to a body or system of connected parts used to support a load.
Important examples related to Civil Engineering include buildings, bridges, and towers;
and in other branches of engineering, ship and aircraft frames, tanks, pressure vessels,
mechanical systems, and electrical supporting structures are important. In order to design
a structure, one must serve a specified function for public use, the engineer must account
for its safety, aesthetics, and serviceability, while taking into consideration economic and
environmental constraints.

This project focuses on the structural analysis and design of a 2B+G+M+15 office
building located in Addis Ababa city. The structural analysis and design of the building
consists of two parts, the sub-structure part and the super-structure part.

Structural Analysis is the determination of the effects of loads on physical structures

and their components. The loads include; self-weight of the building, Live load, wind load,
Earth quake loads, etc… The structural analysis and design will be according to EBCS-
1995 and all the courses we covered for the last five years. The structural design of this
office building involves design of floor slabs, stairs, beams, columns, foundation and
analysis of frames.

1.2. Objectives
1.2.1 General Objectives
 To analyze and design the building.
 To improve our understanding in structural analysis and design of a building.
 To develop a habit of working as a team.
 To improve our communication skills with others.
 To summarize all course matters related to structural engineering.

1.2.2. Specific Objectives

 Model and analyze the structure with software (ETABS).
 Design the structure manually according to EBCS-1995 using the analysis
results from the software
 Design Specific structural members with software (ETABS).
 Compare the design results from manual design according to EBCS-1995 &
from the software.
 Conclude and recommend whether designing with software is both safe and
economical or not.

 To select and design the appropriate type of foundation for the building.
 To improve our skills on software such as SAP, ETABS, EXCEL and
AUTOCAD.

2. Methodology and Procedure

2.1. General Design Procédure
The design approach or methodology for carrying out this project is based on the limit
state design, EBCS-1995 building design code. The limit state Design (LSD) method has been
recognized as the design approach for reinforced concrete, which ideally combine the best features
of ultimate strength and working stress design. This is desirable because if sections are
proportioned by ultimate strength requirements alone, there is a danger that although the load
factors are adequate to ensure safety against strength failure, the cracking and deflections at service
loads may be excessive. Thus to ensure a satisfactory design, the deflection and crack width must
be checked for service loads to make sure that they lay within reasonable limiting values dictated
by functional requirement of the structure. These require the use of elastic theory. Therefore, in
the LSD method, structures will be designed for strength at ultimate loads (ULS) and deflection
and crack width checked at service loads (SLS).

The following things will be done:

1. Roof analysis and design

2. Slab and stair analysis and design
3. Modeling in ETABS
4. Design of structural elements with output from ETABS
5. Design of foundation with reaction output from ETABS

2.2. Data Analysis

Data analysis will be carried out by starting calculating loads on slabs from top slab to the bottom.
This includes both live load and dead load on the slab. After that the loads are transferred to beam
and they go to columns. Finally based on maximum loads from the load combinations, columns,
the foundation type and size will be determined.

Earthquake and wind load will also be considered according to EBCS-1995 by taking the one
which has larger effect. Based on the situation shear wall might also be included.

2.3. Materials Used

Since structural Analysis of a building is very complicated and time consuming, we
will use a software (ETABS 2015) to analyze the structure. Then using the analysis results we will
design the structural members by providing an excel sheet according to EBCS 1995 which will
save our time.

And we will also use AutoCAD to understand and visualize architectural design of
the structure and also word document to provide our final output. We will continuously use EBCS-
1995 for the analysis.
