SYNOPSIS ON THERMAL DESIGN OF AN ON BOARD CHARGER

INTRODUCTION
Electric vehicles have a rapid growth in terms of range, lower battery cost and the fast
charging rate. It is expected that the sales of the electric vehicles are to be tripled by 2030 and
even the government of India now has encouraged the usage of these vehicles according to the
above mentioned advantages and as one of the pollution control strategies. Now since this is the
era is of developing electric vehicles we find a lot of challenges to be faced.
The electric vehicles have batteries and power electronics which include onboard charger,
used to for power conversions from various power electronics. During these power conversions
the components present in this charger circuit develops a lot of heat and effective management of
this heat generated is challenge. Hence the study of the various techniques and the various
qualification standards as mentioned by the authority is very important.

Here the work defines the title as “THERMAL DESIGN OF AN

ONBOARD CHARGER”

With the objectives as,

• Study of different types of thermal management techniques.

• Study of existing thermal management system and qualification standards used in

on board and off board charger.

• Thermal modelling of on board charger.

• Manufacturing and implementation of thermal protection system on charger prototype.
