PREDICTING OUTCOME

Predicting is a reading comprehension strateg y that readers use to anticipate what

comes next based on clues from the text and by using their prior knowledg e. is an
ong oing process that keeps the reader eng ag ed as he or she tries to fig ure out what
is coming next by making new predictions. He or she is also revising old
predictions as more information is g athered.

Teachers should beg in modeling the strateg y of making predictions reg ularly with
young students, and they should continue using this strateg y throug hout elementary
and middle schooluntil students have integ rated the strateg y into their
independent reading .
Benefits of teaching students to make predictions: 1. Helps students to ask
