A Case Study About the Impediments of the Students to Interact with Others

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Most of the students are afraid in speaking in front of the class because of having

an anxiety in communicating to others and having a lack of confidence. A lot of them get

nervous when they are delivering a speech or having a recitation because of thinking a

negative thought, they always think that they will make a mistake if they speak in front of

the class especially when the language they use is English. Having good communication

skill is important to every student because it can help them in different task like

presentation in the class and academic performances.

English is one of the significant languages that should learn of every student to

become more fluent in this international language and to enhance their ability in

communication to become a professional. Every individual must improve their

communication skill to accomplish different academic performances like quizzes, speech,

projects, and assignments.

Scrivener (2005, 147) claims that there seems to be some difficulty in moving

language from passive knowledge into active usage. Without experience in using the

language, learners may tend to be nervous about trying to say things.

The reason why student tend to be nervous is that they may fear seeming foolish.

They are afraid that they will be embarrassed because they are not used in

communicating and they have a low self esteem so they have a stage fright. Students

should build their ability in communication to face different challenges in academic

performances. There are primary ways to avoid stage fright you just need to trust yourself

so that you can overcome your anxiety.

“While listening and reading involve the ability to correctly receive messages and

are therefore referred to as receptive skills, speaking and writing, on the other hand,

involve language production and are referred to as productive skills.” (Harmer 1995, 16)

Harmer (1995) explained that, the Receptive skills like listening and reading, it

doesn’t need to produce language because they will receive and understand it while the

Productive skills it involves language like speaking and writing. Students should also

develop their writing skills so that they can improve their communication skill. Reading

and Listening can also help in improving and developing their skills in communication.

And Conversation is such a natural part of our lives that many people are not conscious

of what happens within it. However, conversation follows certain rules which should be

obeyed in order for participants to feel relaxed and it can also help students in correcting

their grammar.

Ladousse (1987, 6) points out the special reasons for using the role play in the

lessons. It puts students in situations in which they are required to use and develop

language necessary in social relationships and helps them to build up their social skills.

In developing Communication skill that uses English language it should make it

into an action so that the students will easily learn in speaking English. Having a role

play can help the students in building their confidence and building a good relationship

with others.

According to Ur (1991, 281) describes some strategies to enhance students’

motivation to speak in a lesson. The principal one is selecting the topic carefully to make

it as interesting for students as possible. If the teacher’s choice fails in the class, there

should be no panic or embarrassment. The possible solution to this situation may be

asking the students to vote for a topic they would be interested in talking about.

A good communication skill can help the students in different aspects. It is the

most important skill that they need to develop so that they can have a high grades to

achieve their goals in life. Having this skill can lessen the fear of student in sharing their

thoughts and ideas to others. It can also help them in making a healthy relationship with

every individual.

The Researcher wants to find a solution to overcome the fear of every student in

communicating. As a student the researchers want to do a research about this topic

because they want to know how to handle and overcome this problem. The researchers

want to give a motivation and aspiration to improve the communication skill of every

individual.

Statement of the Problem

This study is aim to determine on how to develop the communication skill of every

student in Mary The Queen College, School Year 2017-2018

1. What are the factors affecting the speech impediments of a student?

2. What are the problems that you might encounter when interacting with others?

3. What are the solutions to remedy the problems?

Scope and Delimitation

This research was focused in the Impediments of the students to interacting or

communicating well with others. The factors of having difficulties of the students that

they need to build their confidence and not having fearful of offending others. The

researchers wants to focused it to all students who was studying at Mary The Queen

College to enlighten them on how they manage or lift their selves up.

Definition of Terms

To be able to have a better understanding of this study, the following terms were defined

conceptually and/or operationally:

Receptive skills- are listening and reading, because learners do not need to

produce language to do these, they receive and understand it. These skills are sometimes

known as passive skills. They can be contrasted with the productive or active skills of

speaking and writing. (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Receptive skills)

English- is the most widely learned second language and is either the official

language or one of the official languages in almost 60 sovereign states.

Speaking- is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves

producing and receiving and processing information (Brown, 1994; Burns & Joyce,

1997). Its form and meaning are dependent on the context in which it occurs, including

METHODOLOGY

This chapter deals with the research design, participants, data collection, and data

analysis used in the study.

Research Design

Qualitative Research- This study works with non-numerical data and it involves a

Direct Observation, Interviews, Participation, Immersion, and Focus Group to seek

information and gathered data to improve the communication skill of a student. One of

type in Qualitative Research is Case study it involves a long-time study to asses and

describes the factors of having an anxiety in communication. This method have a variety

of data collection such as questionnaires, observation, interviews, and documentary

analysis. The researchers used the case study because this research involves to the

students were they're encountered of having difficulties to communicating with others.

This problem is about education and it needed a long time study to gather information.

The questionnaires were the main instruments used to gather data needed in the study.

Participants

The study was conducted at the ten (10) students at Mary The Queen College in

San Matias, Guagua Pampanga during the school year 2017-2018. The respondents of the

study were all from Senior High School Department.

Data Collection

Administrators were interviewed and given an open – ended questions to know

the problems they encountered in the implementation of the SHS program and what

strategies they used to solve the encountered problems. Text data was the product of the

second phase of the study.

Data Analysis

The procedure in this phase was qualitative cases study that dealt with the

problems and coping measures of the respondents. Theme development regarding

assertions utilized as findings in this phase.
