1-2 day lesson LDC/Unit Title: Setting SMART Goals

Lesson Objective: (What will my students KNOW by the end of the lesson? What will they DO to learn it?)
Students will be able to turn a general goal into a SMART goal as well as create their own.

TIME INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE

Get started/Drill/Do Now: (What meaningful activity will students complete as soon as they enter the classroom?)

5 min
Write down one behavior, one personal, and academic (school) goal
Engage/Motivation: (How will student interest be sparked? Is there prior knowledge that should be tapped? Is there vocabulary that must be cleared? Is
there brainstorming that student need to complete before the lesson begins?)
5min
I will ask student to share out some of their goals. Once we share, I’ll tell students that these goals are great, but unless we
have clear, action steps, most goals are difficult to achieve or we lose motivation in achieving them
Whole Group Instruction: (Focus lessons [explicit teaching/modeling, strategy demonstration, activate prior knowledge], shared reading, shared writing,
discussion, writing process.)

10 As a class, we will go over what SMART goal setting is and what is stands for. In order to achieve our goals, we
min
must have a plan that is specific, measurable, achievable, reasonable/relevant, and time sensitive. We will
practice turning some into vague ones into SMART goals as a class. Students will notes on each component and
example.
Group Practice/Small Group Instruction: (teacher-facilitated group discussion, student or teacher-led collaboration, student conferencing, re-teaching
or intervention, writing process)
20
min Students will break into partners or groups of three and draw a SMART a vague goal from the container. The group’s job is
to use the SMART method to turn the goal into a more specific goal with action plan steps. Afterwards, we will go over
examples as a class and how each group made them SMART.
Evaluate Understanding/Assessment: (How will I know if students have achieved today’s objective?)
Students will work independently to answer exit ticket questions by stating each component of SMART and
5 min
turning a vague goal into a SMART goal.

5 Closing Activities/Summary: (How will I tie up loose ends, reinforce/revisit the objective and connect the lesson to the unit?)
min Will pass out sheet for students to create their own SMART goals next class.
Enrichment/Extension/Re-teaching/Accommodations: (How will my lesson satisfy the needs of all learners?)
