Proxy War Simulation Project

Your task is to set up a conflict resolution scenario for a cold war hotspot. You have been assigned one
of the following proxy wars:

1. Korea
2. Vietnam
3. Chile
4. Afghanistan
5. El Salvador
6. Nicaragua

In order to develop your scenario, you will first need to understand the nature of your conflict by using
the elements of a conflict worksheet. This will help you examine who is involved, the nature of their
relationship, what is the issue of the conflict, and background to their conflict. Begin by understanding
the situation of the country first. The Cold War dimension often is secondary to what is going on. The
war or fighting typically breaks out as the unresolved conflict reaches a head. Understanding the war
itself is not as important as understanding what led to it.

Once you have examined what is driving the conflict then you can begin to develop the conflict
resolution scenario. It should include three elements:

1. a perfect paragraph describing the background of the conflict

2. important perspectives on the conflict
 4 figures
 Description of their perspective: background, response and desires
 Supporting pictures, maps, etc.
3. a perfect paragraph describing the results of the conflict.

The most important element of the project is selecting the major players in the conflict and describing
their perspective on it. This should include significant national figures from the focus country as well as
the United States and the Soviet Union (or some other nation closely allied to them). For most proxy
wars you should develop four perspectives on it. For each figure you should narrate the background that
impacts their perspective, how they feel about it, and what they desire. You should include pictures,
maps, and other supporting information to enhance the understanding of each perspective.
