Literacy – Predicting Lesson Plan

Introduction:

Have students to think about what a prediction is?

- Think, Pair and Share ideas/knowledge
- Have students brain storm on what sentences they can use to start off their thinking
and prediction. Write students ideas on the white board.
- Introduce books, ‘The Way Back Home’ and ‘The Ultimate Guide – Animal’
- Once book at a time, have students thinking about the title and have a look at the
cover page.
- Once they’ve had a good think, have them share their predictions with their
shoulder partner.
- Come back together as a group, share some of the student’s predictions.

Activity:

Introduce the book they will be reading as a whole class.

- Have students look at the cover and think about the title and/or any other words on
the cover page. Think about it and come up with a prediction about the book
- Share predictions with your shoulder partner.
- Write down your prediction on a sticky note.
- Have students read out their predictions to the whole class and then place it on the
prediction chart on the white board.
- Students will then move onto thinking about why they have made their prediction,
Asking questions such as:
“Can you tell me specifically why you made that prediction?”
“What was the reason behind your prediction?”
“Have you read any of the other books the author (Judy Blume) has written?”
- Allow students to discuss/explain it with their shoulder partner why they made their
prediction.
- Students will then move onto explaining (by writing) a description/reason as to why
they have made their predictions. (Reminding the students to keep in mind what the
cover page looks like/consist of, the title, the author and any other words that may
stand out to them that helped with their prediction)
- Once it’s completed, their explanation will be placed with their prediction on display.
Students can then refer to these predictions when they have finished the book.

Students Learning Outcome:

After this lesson students are able to:

- Understand that a prediction is something done prior to reading the book (and/or
for example an event)
- Make their own predictions of the book ‘Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing’
- Make a connection from what they can see and read from the front cover with their
prediction.
- Explain why and how they came up with their predictions.
