Grade Level: Kindergarten Lesson Title: Actions and feelings are the cause & effect

Objectives :
- Students will be able to identify cause and effect details from the story Chrysanthemum and also their own lives, by
describing actions (cause) and the effect those actions have on feelings (effect).
- Students will be able to orally retell stories as they relate to cause and effect with their peers, including the
description of actions and how those actions effected feelings.

Materials/Resources Needed:
 Anchor chart paper
 Markers
 Worksheet
 Pencils & Crayons

Anticipatory Set (List specific statements or activities you will use to focus students on the lesson for the day.):
1. Connect lesson to previous lesson on reading Chrysanthemum
2. Review times in the text when Chrysanthemum felt sad, model this, sentence starter, turn and talk
3. Define cause and effect for them (write definitions on an anchor chart)
4. Give a model of a cause and effect
5. Ask students to think about their own cause and effect (make a list of these on the whiteboard, cold call)
6. Go through each shared idea and identify which is the cause and which is the effect with the class
7. Have students turn and talk about cause and effect sentence ideas
8. Ask students to share out cause and effect examples so we can put them under the definition on the anchor
chart
9. Ask students to identify the cause and effect of class examples and write them on the anchor chart
10. Thumbs check in on how they are feeling about it (review more if students are unsure)
11. Ask students to think of cause and effect from Chrysanthemum
12. Model an example from the text
13. Give them think time, ask them to turn and talk examples of cause and effect from the story
14. Take class responses and write them on a new anchor chart with the same format as the cause and effect
chart (connecting action with cause and effect with feeling/emotion from the story)
15. Model my own action/feeling cause and effect sentence, write it down on anchor chart as well
16. Ask students to turn and talk about their own cause and effect related to action and feeling
17. Write class examples on the anchor chart as well
18. Students need to write a cause and effect sentence at their desk about a time they felt happy or sad and draw
a picture of that moment
19. Walk around and help individual students

why these objectives are important to accomplish.):
By the end of this lesson students will be able to identify cause and effect in relation to actions and feeling/emotion.
They will be able to identify a time when they felt sad/happy and what caused that feeling.
Input (What information is essential for the student to know before
beginning and how will this skill be communicated to students?):
Before starting this lesson, students need to have read the book Chrysanthemum, because the teacher will be asking
for examples for cause and effect from that specific text.

Model (If you will be demonstrating the skill or competence, how will this be done?):
Modeling in this lesson will be done as the teacher models an example of cause and effect sentences, writes sentence
stems, and gives a personal action/feeling idea.

Check for Understanding (Identify strategies to be used to determine if students have learned the objectives.):
In order to check for understanding, the teacher will read and look at the papers after the lesson is completed to
check for comprehension. The teacher will also be able to check for understanding as students are talking with
partners as they answer questions during the anchor chart conversation.

Guided Practice (List activities which will be used to guide student practice and provide a time frame for completing
this practice.):
Guided practice in this lesson is starting by talking about the story, learning about cause and effect, giving examples of
cause and effect from the story, and then giving examples of cause and effect from their own lives.

Closure (What method of review and evaluation will be used to complete the lesson?):
 Set expectations for exit ticket/work time

Independent Practice (List homework/seatwork assignment to be given to students to ensure they have mastered
the skill without teacher guidance.):
Exit ticket with a drawing and sentence from their own life, which demonstrates a cause and effect relationship.
