Anamosa prison put on lockdown

Posted August 12, 2010 10:24 pm by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

ANAMOSA — Anamosa State Penitentiary was put on a lockdown for a period of time on Thursday,

because of a fight among inmates, said Fred Scaletta, a spokesman for the Iowa Department of

Corrections.

Scaletta said two prison employees sustained minor injuries while breaking up the scuffle. He said no

employees or inmates were sent to the hospital for injuries. “All I can tell you is that we had some fights,”

he said.

Scaletta said IDOC started an investigation and may release more information tomorrow. No other

details were made available.

Heat wave brings increase in traffic to hospitals

Posted August 12, 2010 9:43 pm by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

CEDAR RAPIDS – Another day of hot and humid weather brought an increase of patients with

heat-related symptoms to Cedar Rapidsʼ emergency rooms.

Four people received care at Mercy Medical Center. Three adults and one child came in between 9 a.m.

and 3 p.m., said spokeswoman Karen Vander Sanden. Two patients were mowing their lawns, and

another person was drinking too much alcohol, and not enough water.

The heat index was near 100 degrees Thursday. Before Thursdayʼs spike in patients, only two people

had been treated for heat-related symptoms at Mercy over the course of a sultry week, said Vander

Sanden.

There was also an increase of heat-related cases at St. Lukeʼs Hospital, said spokeswoman Whitney

Frost. No specific numbers were immediately available. But, back in June of 1995, another heat wave

resulted in six people seeking care at the hospital, according to a past story in The Gazette.

Thursdayʼs high temperature in Cedar Rapids was 90 degrees. Forecasters expected the temperature to

dip a little on Friday. However, the heat index was expected to hover near 100 again.

The normal temperature on August 12 is 84 degrees, based on KCRG-TV9 weather records.

Frost said it was important for people to follow professional advice in order to avoid heat-related illness.

The National Weather service advises people to drink plenty of water when temperatures rise. It also

says people should find air-conditioned rooms to avoid the heat.

Concrete mix was spilled on Interstate 380 between the J Street and 7th Street E exits around 3 p.m. on
Thursday, August 12, 2010. Iowa Department of Transportation crews scraped the mess after the spill,
which resulted in dust rising up for a short time, said Dennis Parrin, an IDOT supervisor. The mix was
likely spilled from a truck passing through. Motorists were slowed for a short time along southbound
I-380. Police said nobody was injured. (Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News)

judge in North Dakota
Posted August 9, 2010 1:35 pm by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

Updated at 4 a.m. on August 7 — Coreyʼs location has been updated on the U.S. Bureau of Prisons

Web page. Also, removed his age and clarified when he left.

UPDATE POSTED on 8/9/10:

Court documents state that Corey drove away the South Sioux City (Neb.) bank in a white van with

$53,375.

South Sioux City (Neb.) Police Chief Scott Ford said Corey, who allegedly walked away from a halfway

house in Cedar Rapids in July, also had robbed Dakota County State Bank in 1985.

Corey has several felony convictions dating back to 1977, when he was convicted in Wisconsin for

threatening to kill the president of the United States.

When police were seeking Corey, the bulletin advised that Corey frequented casinos.

——————–

CEDAR RAPIDS – A convicted bank robber who left a community corrections center in northeast Iowa

about a month ago appeared before a federal judge Friday in North Dakota.

Edward H. Corey, appeared before Judge Ralph Erickson in a Fargo, N.D., courtroom. No more

information about the proceeding was made available by the clerk of court there.

A Friday story in the Daily News (N.D.) reported that Corey was arrested in connection to a Monday

bank robbery in Nebraska.

Earlier in the week, the South Sioux City (Neb.) Police Chief Scott Ford said he wanted to question

Corey about the incident, according to a story in the Sioux City Journal. Ford said Corey matched a

description of a man who had walked away from an Iowa halfway house.

Back in 2004, Corey, who also goes by the name James Allen Reed, was charged with escaping from

custody of the Gerald R. Hinzman Center in Cedar Rapids, according to federal court records.

Coreyʼ s criminal history includes several charges and convictions for thefts and robberies, as well as

other escapes.

The U.S. Bureau of Prisons Web page shows Corey is now at a community correctional facility in

Kansas City, Kan.

Attempts were made Friday to contact officials at the U.S. Probation Office for the Northern District of

Iowa, the Clerk of the U.S. District Court of North Dakota, the U.S. Marshals Service, the South Sioux

City Police Department, and the Gerald R. Hinzman Center. None were immediately successful.

This is a developing story, please check back for updates.

during a traffic stop.

According to a police report Jeffrey L. Wade, 35, of Marion, was pulled over after police saw him driving

with no headlights on First Avenue near 10th Street E, around 1:30 a.m. He was allegedly driving on the

wrong side of the road when police pulled him over.

After being stopped Wade got out of his vehicle. Police documented that he became verbally abusive,

and refused to comply with their orders.

Officers became nervous after Wade put his hand in his pocket. After repeated warnings they used the

Update: West Branch winery will retain character of historic

post office
Posted August 2, 2010 8:18 pm by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

WEST BRANCH — The arch will rise again, says the co-owner of a recently collapsed building in

historic downtown West Branch.

Ilene Lande and her husband, John McNutt, had been working to renovate the former post office, which

had a prominent arch, into a winery. On June 11 the building collapsed.

Lande and McNutt were left to sort through a pile of bricks at 116 E. Main St. The building had most

recently been Virgilʼs Sinclair. Many of the buildings in West Branch are part of the Herbert Hoover

National Historic Site.

The renovated building was going to be a tasting room to complement another structure of the winery.

The other building wasnʼt affected by the collapse.

Crews cleaned up the debris and a new design for the tasting room was hatched.

Walls for the new buildingʼs foundation have been set in place. “If the weather cooperates this week weʼll

put in parts of the foundation and footing of the building,” said Lande.

Some bricks were salvaged after the building crumbled, said Lande. She said those bricks are being

kept safe with a contractor for now. But, they will find a way into the new structure, which will have an

arch.
The arch of the new winery will retain the character of the old building, Lande said. “The arch was very

distinctive and itʼs sorely missed in the downtown district, ” she said.

The couple had planned to call the new winery business 1907, but that changed after the collapse, said

Lande. Itʼs no longer practical for the couple to use the name 1907, said Lande.

Brick Arch Winery is the new name.

Lande said the couple is still trying to get money from an insurance claim they filed after the building

collapsed. It will be a few weeks before they get an answer on that claim, said Lande.

The couple plans to open the new winery in December. “We have a lot of work to do,” Lande said.

Hooverfest comes to West Branch on Saturday, Aug. 7. The business partners plan to capitalize on the

opportunity. Theyʼll be selling t-shirts that read, The Arch Will Rise Again!

UPDATE: Three arrests made in after argument leads to

gunshot

Updated at 12:30 p.m. by Jeff Raasch

CEDAR RAPIDS -Three people were arrested in connection with a disturbance that preceded a

gunshot, but police said the shooter was still at-large Thursday.

One shot was fired from a 12-gauge shotgun around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday near the corner of Bever

Avenue and 16th Street SE, police said. No one was struck.

Police said four men began arguing in Redmond Park, and the disturbance eventually spilled into the

residential area. Multiple 911 calls reported the gunshot. Capt. Steve OʼKonek said investigators found

one spent round in the area.

Officers went back to the area around 9:30 p.m. when another disturbance was reported. They arrested

Nevin M. Baker, 25, of Cedar Rapids; Benjamin Harper, 22, of Birmingham, Ala. and Ray A. Robertson,

of Iowa City. All three are charged with interference with official acts after they ran from officers.

“We think (Baker)assisted in driving some of the people to that location,” OʼKonek said.

OʼKonek said significant progress had been made following leads to find the shooter, but details were

still being sorted out.

“Thereʼs still a lot of conflicting information right now,” OʼKonek said.

Dawn Keanes, who lives near the intersection where the shot was fired, said she saw the shooter. She

said the man walked out from behind an alley just south of Bever Avenue, fired a shotgun and ran away.

Other witnesses said they saw a gray Dodge car after the shot. They believed that some of the people

involved in the fight were riding in the car.

Keanes stood close to her son as she looked out at the police scene.

“Everybody was screaming,” she said.

“It started off just as a simple traffic stop,” said Sgt. Steven Yeardley.

Kevin Holmes, 28, had been barred from driving when the chase began around 10 p.m.

An officer attempted to pull him over at 3rd Avenue and 10th Street SE, said Yeardley.

Troy Mills braces for what’s to come

TROY MILLS – The failure of an 80-year-old dam and expectation of a record river crest has this

unincorporated Linn County community of around 150 people concerned about the next 36 hours.

“Thereʼs kind of a sense of that buzz, of nervous anticipation,” said Melissa Ward, manager of a local

store.

Troy store, 5913, Main St., was the social nerve center for the town on Saturday after most of its

residents lost Internet and phone service, said Ward. She said Iowa Telecom had been working to repair

service after lines went down about 10:30 a.m.

While the currents of the Wapsinpinicon rushed by, some neighbors along Coggon Road pulled together

to fill sandbags close to their homes, which were being threatened by the rushing water. At 6:30 p.m.

some basements had been inundated by the Wapsi.

At sunset a group of neighbors were relaxing after the work, they laughed and sipped beer, knowing that

so much of whatʼs to come was simply beyond their control.

Back in 1999, the river severely impacted some homes in town. The 2008 flood was a less of a disaster,

said Gary Woods, whose home is nearby a bridge that connects Troy Mills to the close by town of

Walker.

He said whatever happened upstream today by Independence would surely foreshadow life in the town

tomorrow. He may have to start moving possessions, or turn on his sump pump.

At the store, Ward said Woodsʼs understanding of the townʼs connection to the river was true.
The river is called a meandering stream, said Woods.

“Sometimes I own two acres, sometimes itʼs one. It just depends on what the river wants to give,” he

Updated: Bullet fired at Cedar Rapids church

Posted July 22, 2010 5:59 pm by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

Updated at 5:59 p.m. — after letter received from church pastor

CEDAR RAPIDS – Police are investigating after a bullet was fired upon the outside of a Cedar Rapids

church sanctuary.

Jay Eberly, Senior Pastor of Spirit of Faith Family Church, 4070 22nd Ave. SW, said a bullet was found

by ushers on the carpet of the worship space on Wednesday evening. The gunshot was not believed to

be a targeted act of violence, said Eberly, in an e-mail to Gazette Communications.

Itʼs unknown when or why the bullet was fired.

“The bullet penetrated the east wall of the church and had come through the ceiling in the back

sanctuary,” Eberly wrote. The church property was vacant at the time the shot was fired, Eberly wrote.

“This obviously happened when no one was in the facility, or we would have no doubt known,” wrote

Eberly.

Police said nobody was injured. Some members of the church community were at the property after

investigators came to the scene around 9:20 p.m. All who were asked declined to be interviewed.

The department is still investigating the gunshot as an act of criminal mischief, and there are no

suspects at this time, said a police spokesman, Sgt. Cristy Hamblin.

Eberly concludes the letter by writing, “Spirit of Faith Family Church has been a safe place to worship for

many years, and we will see to it that it remains so in the future.”

Updated at 4:03 p.m. on July 22:

CEDAR RAPIDS — Police spokeswoman, Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said the investigation is continuing as an

act of criminal mischief. Hamblin said officers had no suspects in the church vandalism as of 3:40 p.m.

Attempts to reach church pastor Jay Eberly were unsuccessful.

No other information on the crime is available at this time.

Explosive device discovered at old Waterloo weapons plant

Posted July 21, 2010 6:31 pm by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

WATERLOO – An explosive device was discovered this afternoon as workers planned for the demolition

of a former weapons manufacturing plant.

A witness said police and military were on the scene at Chamberlain Manufacturing Co., near East

Fourth and Esther Streets. The device has been classified as an M-3 warhead and weighs around 80

pounds, said Myke Goings, whoʼs affiliated with KCRG-TV9.

The Waterloo Police Department is securing the location of the property. Police do not believe any other

devices exist in the factory. They are reportedly treating the device as a live explosive, but donʼt know if

itʼs active.

Capt. Tim Pillack, nor the police commander on duty were immediately available for comment on the

device.

The factory was open from 1953 until 1994, according to the Waterloo Courier. An editorial in that paper

also said the city took ownership of the building in December 2005.

-This is a developing story, check back for updates.

Posted July 16, 2010 1:08 am by Christopher Pratt/SourceMedia Group News

Update at 1:08 a.m. on July 16, 2010

CEDAR RAPIDS — This incident may be linked to graffiti recently applied to the Kingston Stadium press

box. At the bridge, Officer Janae Rubino said she thought there were similarities between the two paint

jobs. Rubino said the drawing on the concrete support beam first captured her attention.

Video images (shot with Canon G2) show rough shots of the graffiti noticed by Rubino, as well as other

markings on the bridge.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Police discovered graffiti on a bridge this evening. Officer Janae Rubino says she

noticed the graffiti on the bridge, which connects I-380 over 29th Street NE, around 7 p.m. tonight. She

says she doesnʼt know if itʼs new or old paint. Chapter 64 of the city code prohibits painting on property

without the consent of the owner.

The police department will investigate the graffiti to see if itʼs related to other incidents around the city,

said Sgt. Jeremy Paulsen, the commander on duty.
