Parent Curriculum Guide

September 2010
1st Grade

Dear Parents,
Welcome back to school! We are excited about what we have planned for your
child. We hope you find this curriculum guide helpful! It is designed to give you an
overview of what your child will be learning this month. We welcome your feedback as
you use the Parent Curriculum Guide throughout the year.

This month in reading: This month in reading, the students will be building good
reading habits. They will be practicing strategies before, during and after they read. These
strategies include making predictions about the book before they start reading. They will
also practice thinking about what has happened already in the story and thinking about
what will happen next. The students will also work on summarizing what they read.

Reading at home: Reading with your child is a sure way to get your child interested in
reading! You can try discussing the book and practicing strategies such as talking about
the book before you begin reading. Talk about what characters are in the book and what
the book might be about. Discuss what is happening during the story and what might
happen next. Finally, ask your child what they liked about the book.

This month in writing: This month in writing, the students

will be working on small moment stories. They will begin
with a big picture in their mind. They will channel their ideas
by writing about moments that have been happy, sad, scary
etc. They will practice writing about one particular time
when they did something and focus on sequencing the
moment from first, next, then and last.

Writing at home: You can help your child at home by

talking with them about a particular time that you did
something together. You and your child can plan the story
together discussing what happened first, next, then and last.
You can help your child sound out words and sketch their pictures to tell their story.
This month in math: This month in math, students will practice counting on a number
line. They will also compare pairs of numbers. They will also practice making and
