QUIZ 04 (MIDTERMS) – FLUID DYNAMICS

NAME: DATE: SEP. 11, 2017

INSTRUCTOR: ENGR. ROLLYMAR A. NICOLAS SECTION: ME41FB2

DIRECTION: Read and analyze each question carefully then solve the following problems. Show your complete solutions on a separate
sheet of paper. NO SOLUTION, NO POINTS. Boxyour final answer/s. Use all decimal places without rounding off any digits. Any form of
ERASURES or DOUBLE PRINT/S is not allowed. Any erasure on your final answer will be considered wrong.

1. What is the rate of flow, cu. meter per second, of water passing through a pipe with a diameter of 20 millimeters and a speed of
0.50 meters per second?
2. A 100 millimeter diameter plunger is being pushed at 60 millimeter per second into a tank filled with oil having a specific gravity if
0.82. if the fluid is incompressible, how many Newtons per second of oil is being forced out at a 30 millimeter diameter hole?
3. Water is flowing in an open channel at a depth of 2 meters and a velocity of 3 meters per second. It flows down a chute into
another channel where the depth is 1 meter and the velocity is 10 meters per second. Neglecting friction, determine the
difference in elevation of the channel floors, meters.
4. Gas is flowing through a square conduit whose section gradually changes from 150 millimeters (section 1) to 300 millimeters
(section 2). At section 1, the velocity of flow is 7 meters per second and the density of gas is 1 kilogram per cu. meter while at
section 2, the velocity of flow is 2 meters per second. Sketch the conduit and determine the mass flow rate, kilograms per second,
and the density of the gas at section 2, kilogram per cu. meter.
5. Water enters a motor through a 600 millimeter diameter pipe under a pressure of 14 kPa. It leaves through a 900 millimeter
diameter exhaust pipe with a pressure of 4 kPa. A vertical distance of 2.5 separates the centers of the two pipes at the sections
where the pressures are measured. If 500 liters of water pass the motor each second, compute the power supplied to the motor,
horsepower.
